The Best 27 Inch Monitor: Our Picks
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a 27-inch monitor
What are the advantages of a 27 inch monitor over a 24 inch monitor?
The 27 inch monitor is usually considered not too big and still fits well on your desk.
The space provided by the 16:9 or 21:9 aspect ratio offers enough possibilities to view different windows in parallel without constantly minimising them.
In addition, the annoying black bars when watching films and videos in cinema format are eliminated.
Since the price of the devices has dropped in the meantime, you can usually get a 27-inch monitor for only a few euros more than the 24-inch model.
What is the difference between LED, LCD and TFT?
TFT refers to a specific LCD technology and means Thin Film Transistor.
Almost all LCD monitors and LCD televisions are now based on TFT technology. Therefore, the different designation is not really relevant when buying.
The use of LEDs saves electricity and enables thinner displays. LEDs illuminate the screen from behind, and this technology is gaining the upper hand more and more. If this trend continues to develop, which is very likely, there should no longer be any difference in significance between LCD monitors and LED monitors.
However, many LCD monitors are still available with conventional fluorescent backlight.
Does a 27-inch monitor with a touchscreen make sense for me?
Even though touchscreens are very tempting, they do not make sense for a private person due to the high purchase price.
Thanks to falling production costs, however, touchscreens will become more widespread in the coming years and will be just as easy to use as smartphones and tablets already are.
Especially for designers, architects, medical professionals or graphic artists, a touchscreen can indeed be a sensible investment.
What are the dimensions of a 27-inch monitor?
The screen ratio varies between 16:9, 16:10 and 21:9. In most cases, further 27 inch monitor dimensions are also listed in the data sheet of the device.
How ergonomic is a 27 inch monitor?
If you want to adjust your monitor flexibly according to your needs, you should pay attention to the following functions:
- Tilt: The tilt describes the horizontal inclination of the screen upwards and downwards.
- Swivel: The term swivel describes the ability of the monitor to rotate around the vertical axis to the left and right.
- Pivot: Pivot describes the ability of the monitor to rotate around the horizontal axis from landscape to portrait format.
To counteract physical discomfort even more and to be able to fully enjoy the PC experience, we recommend that you also get a swivel chair adapted to your needs.
Which graphics card fits a 27-inch monitor?
If you have a computer with an HDMI port, the monitor also needs one; if it has a display port, it needs one.
But if you have a monitor for gaming or professional image editing, no standard graphics card will help you get the most out of your screen.
For this, state-of-the-art graphics cards are needed.
What connections should my 27-inch monitor have?
This is a great advantage, especially compared to an analogue VGA connection, because the image data no longer has to be converted to analogue format due to the digital transmission.
If the monitor has a DVI, you should also check whether both the card and the monitor have DVI-D connections. This is the only way to ensure that all data is transmitted digitally.
DVI-A interfaces, on the other hand, are only capable of processing analogue signals, whereas DVI-I interfaces can process both analogue and digital signals.
For sound transmission you need a cable, because DVI connectors can only transmit the image signal.
More and more manufacturers are also using HDMI connections. These transmit both digital signals and sound signals.
The biggest difference to DVI is that the HDMI plugs are much smaller and the cables much thinner. This offers more comfort when connecting and routing the connections.
In order to connect the monitor with HDMI, you must make sure that your graphics card has an HDMI output.
USB ports are also very important. If the monitor has such connections, there is no need for an additional connection between the monitor and the screen.
HDMI can be compared to a display port. The cables of the display port can also transmit video and audio signals and USB signals.
Another advantage is that the display port has the encryption procedure DPCP (Display Port Content Protection).
This means that the display can be controlled directly by the PC, which means that not so much electronics have to be built into the screen itself.
This makes the display port cheaper to manufacture and allows for even thinner monitors.
The older VGA connections are actually unimportant for your decision, as the picture quality is much lower than with the newer connections
Current USB hubs can also be present, which increase flexibility.
Easy access to the monitor makes it easier to connect a mouse and keyboard, external hard drives, USB sticks or webcams.
What screen resolutions are available for 27-inch monitors?
- Full HD: Full HD promises clear, unambiguous images. A special feature is that there are no shadow effects. A medium graphics card is sufficient for this resolution.
- WQHD/QHD: WDQH is the abbreviation for Wide Quad High Definition, whereby QHD and 2K are synonyms for this term.
- ULTRA HD/4K: For this resolution you need a very high quality graphics card.
The following table shows how many pixels belong to which screen resolution.
What additional elements should my 27 inch screen have?
You should consider an attached mount on the monitor if you mainly listen to music with headphones or lose yourself in games.
Can 27-inch monitors be mounted on the wall?
However, a certain amount of space is also needed for the wall mount. In addition, there should be a free space to the wall to be able to tilt the screen. The distance to the screen does not automatically increase.
Depending on how much you want to tilt your screen, you should pay attention to the so-called VESA standard (Video Electronics Standards Association). This standard regulates the hole spacing on the back of the monitor and the necessary screw size.
What is a curved monitor?
Curved monitors with otherwise identical specifications are much more expensive to manufacture than a normal monitor.
What is the frame size for 27 inch monitors?
There are no completely bezel-less screens, but there are models with a bezel 1mm wide. The small frame size minimises distractions from reflections in the frame.
What colours are 27 inch monitors available in?
In the gaming sector, combinations of black with red, green and blue are particularly popular.
You have a better overview and can stream comfortably while gaming without missing anything. This monitor size is therefore becoming increasingly popular among gamers. They also have a higher refresh rate and allow video games to run smoothly.
What are TN panels, IPS panels and VA panels, and how do they differ?
In Twisted Nematic (TN) panel technology, the darkening of the pixels occurs by applying a voltage to the crystals when they change from a vertical to a horizontal plane.
As a result, the light is refracted in a special way. Thus, it is directed in the wrong polarisation direction and blocked by another polarisation filter.
IPS stands for In-Plane Switching. With such screens, the crystals rotate 90 degrees within the horizontal image plane and remain there.
VA means "Vertical-Alignment", the rods are basically aligned perpendicular to the picture plane.
If a voltage is applied to the pixel of the VA panel technology, the rods tilt.
The stronger the voltage, the more the rods align horizontally to the image plane and the more light they block.
What refresh rates do 27 inch monitors have?
Since high refresh rates are almost only found in the gaming sector, newer 144 Hertz 27 inch monitors are increasingly being used there.
What does a 27-inch monitor cost?
The price range extends from the inexpensive entry-level monitor for normal home and office use with the oldest technology to the high-end monitor for almost 2000 euros that can boast the latest technology.
Decision: What types of 27 inch monitors are there and which is the right one for you?
The areas of application for a 27-inch monitor can be roughly divided into three areas:
- 27 inch monitor for office work
- 27 inch monitor for gaming
- 27 inch monitor for video and image editing
Each of these monitor variants has a different composition in its technology, resulting in individual advantages and disadvantages.
Thus, the choice for the best 27 inch monitor depends on your main use.
In the following section, we want to help you make the right choice and find out which monitor is right for you.
To illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of the various technical features, we will present the three areas of application of the 27 inch monitor.
What distinguishes a 27 inch monitor for office work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
If you work in an office or home office, you look at a monitor for many hours every day.
To avoid back pain, a PC monitor at the workplace should at least be height-adjustable, but a fully adjustable monitor would be best.
Tilt, swivel and pivot are the terms you should look for to adjust the screen to your needs.
Manufacturers are increasingly advertising their monitors as "flicker-free" or "flicker-safe", so look out for these terms if your eyes get irritated easily.
Since energy-saving LEDs have been used for backlighting, sensitive people complain more and more often about a flickering effect.
The display of the 27-inch screen should also have a matt and non-reflective surface.
This prevents interference from reflective objects and allows you to concentrate fully on the image content.
Good calibratability of brightness and contrast are very important for eye-friendly screens.
Brightness values of 300 cd/m² are perfectly adequate, because eyes tire quickly with displays that are too bright.
However, the 27-inch monitor should not be too dark either, otherwise you will see less of the image in bright environments.
A recommendation is a static contrast value of at least 1000:1, which is already standard for most monitors.
Furthermore, the monitor should have a screen resolution of at least 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD).
The 27-inch size and resolution allow you to see even small fonts clearly. A DVI connection is sufficient as an interface.
The use of TN panels in office PC screens is sufficient. Compared to other panel technologies, they consume little power and are cheap to produce.
High refresh rates of 120 hertz are not needed in the office area, here the standard refresh rates of 60 hertz are sufficient.
IPS panels are only available from 4 milliseconds and have advantages only in terms of colour representation at different viewing angles.
If you sit alone and frontally in front of a 27-inch monitor, you won't notice any difference and can safely go for the cheaper 27-inch screen with a TN panel.
Average monitors generally use a refresh rate of at least 60 hertz. With 60 frames per second, the eye can perceive a more fluid and thus more pleasant image.
What distinguishes a 27-inch monitor for gaming and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
For gaming enthusiasts, other priorities apply, because when playing games, fast and smooth reproduction is almost the only thing that matters. A short response time of the monitors is important, especially when you play shooters.
For these, the response time should be as short as possible.
For role-playing games and other categories, the reaction time does not have to be a decisive criterion, but here, too, times below 10 milliseconds are advisable.
The shorter the reaction time, the faster you can react to what is happening in the game.
In principle, your 27-inch gaming monitor only needs to have fast panel technology to avoid annoying image lag.
Only screens with a TN panel offer a response time between 1 and 3 milliseconds. A refresh rate of 120 hertz is becoming more and more standard in the gaming sector and is replacing the 60 hertz variants.
120 hertz monitors display even extremely fast movements smoothly, but if you want to be up to date, we recommend a 144 hertz27 inch gaming monitor.
To keep your gaming experience smooth and not diminished by input delays and image errors, there is FreeSync (from AMD) and G-Sync (from NVIDIA), but these two features are still quite expensive and therefore only a "nice to have".
A screen resolution of at least 1920 x 1200 is recommended, but for 27-inch monitors, the WQHD/QHD variant with 2560 x 1440 is also possible, and the latest devices even offer a resolution of 4k.
Depending on how sharp you want to see the games, a higher screen resolution is recommended, but the higher the resolution, the higher the price.
The screen should be connected to a display port, which can transmit resolutions of up to 4K.
Alternatively, a connection to HDMI interfaces can be established with the help of an adapter for the display port. Older interfaces such as VGA or DVI-D may also be available.
What distinguishes a 27-inch monitor for video and image editing and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Photographers, graphic artists, media designers and more should not skimp on the monitor, because true-colour image editing with Photoshop and Lightroom is only possible with high-quality 27-inch monitors. The colour space and screen resolution play an important role.
The WQHD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels is well suited for 27 inch screens. A 4K monitor with a display of 3840 x 2160 pixels provides even more detail.
5K screens can be expected in the next few years, allowing for even finer work. For more convenience in image and video editing, the high resolution also provides.
More toolbars of Photoshop and other programmes can be displayed and more windows can be accommodated on the screen.
27-inch screens intended for image editing benefit especially from their high colour spaces and IPS panels in display.
Since the cheap TN panel technology does not provide stable viewing angles, they cannot be used for image editing. IPS panels are in demand here for 27 inch screens and provide an image output with a high viewing angle.
Combined with professional LED backlighting, they ideally provide a bright, evenly illuminated picture. The "look-up table", or LUT for short, plays an important role in 27 inch monitors for image processing.
Put simply, the LUT determines how many different colours of the colour spectrum a monitor can display. To be able to display over a billion shades of colour, you need a 10-bit LUT. With a 16-bit 3D LUT, the appropriate software and a very good graphics card, you can display the smallest variations of a colour.
However, the advantages of the enhanced colour display only come about if you connect the screen to the PC via the correct connection.
An HDMI input is not sufficient for this type of processing; here you should pay attention to a display port. Inexpensive IPS panels only cover 70 to 80 per cent of the extended colour space, while really professional 27-inch monitors manage at least 90 per cent.
On these screens you can achieve true-colour image processing. The NTSC colour space should only be taken into account if you are involved in video productions and work with moving images.
For private use or photo editing, however, it plays a subordinate role. Ideally, the brightness value should be above 250 candela per square metre. You should prefer a checkerboard contrast of at least 150:1.
Ergonomic features such as tilt, swivel and pivot are extras that make work easier. As are anti-reflective displays, light protection covers and a wide range of connection options via USB hubs.
Buying criteria: You can compare and evaluate 27-inch monitors based on these factors
The most important factors you need to compare and evaluate 27-inch monitors are shown in the following section.
This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular device is suitable for you or not.
In summary, these are:
- Energy efficiency
- Optional equipment
In the following sections you can read about the individual purchase criteria and how you can classify them.
The most obvious criterion when buying your new screen is probably the display.
We have already described the three different types of monitors in more detail, and the various combinations of these provide different forms of display.
If you play a lot of fast modern games, the 27-inch monitor should have TN panel technology, a low response time and high refresh rates.
The refresh rate is an important reference value, especially for first-person scooters, as it contributes significantly to the game display.
As described above, a 27-inch monitor is also excellent for image editing. In order to be able to carry out this activity accurately, you should pay attention to the displayable colours and thus the coverage of the sRGB and AdobeRGB colour spaces when buying.
This ensures outstanding working possibilities when creating designs.
A good display on a 27 inch screen is not only error-free, but also easy on the eyes.
You should also prefer the WQHD screen resolution. This gives you an area of 2560 x 1440 pixels on the 27-inch monitor and allows you to display several toolbars (e.g. Photoshop).
It also allows you to fit more windows on the screen. IPS panels provide stable viewing angles.
Brightness and contrast are important for all three 27-inch monitor variants, especially for monitors that you use for several hours a day. Good brightness and contrast values are easy on the eyes. When looking at the display, you should pay close attention to what you want to use the 27 inch monitor for and consider the following criteria when buying it
To maintain a healthy posture while working or playing, the ergonomics of the 27-inch monitor are an important factor when buying a screen. Especially if you want to buy a monitor for your office, you should not disregard this criterion.
To prevent tension, your 27-inch monitor should at least have a tilt function. These can help prevent annoying reflections from appearing on your display.
If you want to share your monitor with someone, it is also particularly important to adjust it to their height.
Therefore, make sure that the screen is height-adjustable. If you often attend meetings or work in larger offices, the swivel function is a good feature when buying a 27-inch monitor.
This way you can easily rotate your monitor when you want to show something to your colleagues. The pivot/portrait function is mainly important in areas of text composition.
You can easily rotate your screen by 90 degrees, which allows for a better full-screen view of A4 pages or even A3 pages. If for some reason it is not possible to adjust your screen in your work, you should pay attention to the VESA wall mounts.
The question of design is entirely up to you, depending on which colours and frames you prefer. However, since the screen is always visible, you should make sure that you like the design.
When it comes to colour, you have a rather narrow range of choices: Black, silver and white are the most common colours.
Only for gaming monitors are there also colourful designs with red, green and blue. There are also almost frameless monitors. These usually have a frame of 0.1 cm. Such a design looks particularly noble.
However, make sure that the ergonomics are not neglected. This is often the case, especially with design models. You have to weigh up what is more important for you when buying.
The "Thin Film Translator" helps to control the light transmission of the liquid crystals. Each crystal represents a pixel and when the thin film transistor puts the crystal under voltage, it starts to rotate. So it has to change the refraction of the light.
As described above, you should check which interfaces your graphics card has. This is the only way to connect the 27 inch monitor to the respective port.
In general, however, the type of connection usually depends on the age of the devices that are to be connected to the monitor. Analogue inputs can normally be dispensed with, except in the case of older notebooks.
Your focus should therefore rather be on digital signal transmission.
The more modern your workplace or the devices you use, the more important it is for your 27-inch monitor to have modern interfaces.
Frame rates are especially important for gaming. It makes little sense to buy a 120 Hz monitor but only have a 60 Hz connection.
Integrated USB hubs on the 27-inch monitor provide more flexibility. All in all, there are more USB sockets available. In addition, they are often much easier to reach on the monitor than on the PC case.
Screens are basically responsible for most of the power consumption of a PC. Therefore, you should definitely pay attention to the efficiency class of the monitor, otherwise you might find yourself in overhead costs. It should be at least class C.
You can also look for environmental labels. Seals such as Energy Star or Blue Angel indicate economical and environmentally friendly monitors.
There are many additional elements designed to make the user experience more pleasant. Gaming monitors in particular benefit from the additional features because the gaming experience is considerably enhanced.
Special features such as AMD Freesync/NVIDIA G-Sync and Motion Blur Reduction correct image errors and are therefore suitable for gaming enthusiasts.
Eye fatigue and headaches are prevented by Flickerfree and Low Blue Light technologies, for example.
If you sit in front of your screen for a long time and regularly, you should also take these features into account in your purchase decision.
Integrated speakers, webcams and microphones are suitable for you if you have little space available. For high-quality installations, however, you have to reckon with a price surcharge. Above all, special features can be the deciding factor in your purchase decision.
Facts worth knowing about 27-inch monitors
Can I connect Apple devices to a 27-inch monitor?
Yes, you can, but you will need a separate adapter. You can find a list of possible adapters on the Apple website.
Can I connect a game console to a 27-inch monitor?
As long as your monitor has an HDMI input, you should be able to connect your (modern) game console without any problems. The most popular consoles, such as the PS4 or Xbox One, all have an HDMI interface. Older consoles may need an adapter.
What should I pay attention to when sitting in front of a 27-inch screen?
You should look slightly downwards into the monitor, with the image no closer than 30 cm to your face. This avoids neck pain and damage to the eyes. Your feet should be hip-width apart on the floor, with your pelvis slightly tilted forward. This will protect your spine.
Seat balls are particularly recommended, but so are high-quality office chairs. With these you are virtually forced into the correct sitting posture.
