The African mango is known for its effect on the metabolism. It is said to help with weight loss and to have a detoxifying effect. This article deals intensively with the areas of application of the plant. It names possible effects and side effects and is based on current studies.

In our large African Mango Test 2021 we set up purchase and evaluation criteria so that you can better orientate yourself in the large variety of products. In addition, we present two preparations that you can use in your purchase decision. Finally, we answer all the important questions about African mango so that you are well informed after reading this article.

By paying attention to the quality and ingredients, you give your body what it really needs. Also look at the manufacturer's certificates on the purity of the product.

Dosage form

Like most dietary supplements, African Mango comes in different forms. As already mentioned, the basis of the supplements is the extract obtained from the seeds.

If you are unsure which parts of the plant have been processed, you can ask the manufacturer for the relevant information and ask to see certificates if necessary.

African Mango is available in the following dosage forms:

  • Capsules
  • Tablets
  • Powder
  • Solutions / drops
  • Juice

The largest selection of African Mango preparations can be found in capsule and tablet form. The powder has to be mixed independently, but is easier to dose. The same applies to drops and the concentrated juice of the fruit. However, these supplements are also more difficult to obtain.

Dosage

The dosage of a supplement depends on various parameters. Usually, a distinction is made between gender, age and weight. African Mango products vary in terms of their dosage instructions depending on the manufacturer and the offer.

The supplement is available from as little as 150 mg per capsule. The most common dosages are between 600 and 900 milligrams. High-dose capsules with up to 6000 milligrams are also available. These are often called "forte" or "advanced" and are more expensive.

Because there are no reliable dosage guidelines for African Mango so far, we recommend that you try a low dose first. For tablets and capsules the dosage is given, for concentrates and powders you can adjust it yourself by counting the drops or teaspoons.

Other ingredients

There are products that contain only African Mango and those that have a long list of ingredients. Manufacturers of African Mango preparations like to promote their products by drawing attention to the additional ingredients.

They then call these products "African Mango complex" and mix in substances such as green tea, green coffee beans, konjac, acai fruit, capsicum, glucomannan, raspberry ketone, cellulose and vitamin B3.

Many products contain additional ingredients.

Konjac swells in combination with liquids and thus suppresses the feeling of hunger. Cellulose is a sugar and acts as a filler with no other benefit. The effect of raspberry ketones on fat burning has not been proven.

Most of these ingredients can be considered safe in normal amounts. However, some of them are unnecessary or even controversial. These include cellulose and raspberry ketones.

There is no evidence of positive effects on the human organism when taking these substances. In fact, the use of "too many" ingredients can tend to be frivolous and even deceptive.

Package size

The package size of preparations is an important purchase criterion. It can be used to estimate how long a package will last before it is used up. This size is also reflected in the price. Products with fewer contents are usually cheaper than larger packs.

To determine the right pack size for you, you should think about the period of time over which you want to take the African Mango. If you want to use it as a temporary cure, a pack that is used up after 4 to 12 weeks is sufficient.

However, if you expect to take the preparation for a long time, you can buy a bulk pack from the outset. Although capsules and tablets often have a long shelf life, you should always check the expiry date when buying a supply.

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying African Mango

In order for you to be informed about the effectiveness of African Mango, you will find answers to the most important questions below. For this purpose, current studies have been taken into account and listed, as well as possible side effects.

What is African Mango and how does it work?

The African mango or Irvingia gabonensis is an evergreen tree species found in the warm and humid rainforests of West and Central Africa and in Southeast Asia.

Its stone fruits are thin-skinned and look similar to the conventional mango. They can be eaten fresh, often an extract is made from the seed in the kernel.

Research into the effects of parts of the Irvingia plant has only been going on for about 15 years. For this reason, the African mango has so far only been cultivated in its native areas. There, the fruits are processed into jam.

Black dye is extracted from the pulp to dye clothes, and oil is pressed from the seeds. Leftover seeds can be used as a thickener for soups and stews.

Weight reduction

The African mango is known for its weight-reducing effect and is sometimes referred to as a "weight loss agent". This is due to its ability to promote fatty acid breakdown and inhibit fatty acid synthesis. (3)

The results of a clinical study suggest that Irvingia seeds can help with weight loss. Over a period of 4 weeks, the mean body weight was significantly reduced compared to a placebo group. (1)

At the same time, in another study with rats and different doses of the Irvingia seed extract, no differences in weight can be found. (7)

The fact that African mango can reduce obesity is said to be due to the high fibre content (1) and the leptin it contains, in addition to the properties mentioned above. The former provides a faster feeling of satiety, while leptin is a hormone that suppresses appetite. (12)

The studies on African mango are not yet clear, but first tendencies can be deduced.

Regulation of the blood sugar level

In addition to its weight-reducing effect, African Mango is believed to be able to lower and regulate blood sugar levels. This would be particularly interesting for diabetics, who could adjust their insulin requirements by taking the preparation.

There is evidence that taking 150 milligrams of Irvingia twice a day can lower glucose levels in the blood. (2) However, to be able to make reliable statements about the influence on blood glucose levels, there is a lack of relevant research so far.

Reduction of the cholesterol level (LDL)

The seeds of the African mango are suspected of having an effect on blood fats such as cholesterol. They are supposed to reduce the "bad" LDL cholesterol, which leads to deposits in the arteries, and increase the "good" HDL cholesterol, which can strengthen the cells.

In studies with overweight patients as well as with rats, it was observed that the total cholesterol LDL decreased after a few weeks with the intake of African Mango. The "good" HDL cholesterol increased at the same time. (1, 4) The dosage of the extract needed to achieve these effects is not described.

Binding of toxic substances

There are African Mango products on the market that advertise their detox effects. The term "detox" is problematic. This is because it is not protected, which means that anyone can use it and does not have to show any corresponding proof of effectiveness.

There is a study that deals with the detoxifying effect of products of brown coal and African mango. It says that the mixture of these substances has the potential to remove toxic heavy metals. (5)

Due to the lack of studies, we do not recommend assuming for the time being that African Mango can bind toxic substances.

However, the study took place in optimal laboratory conditions and in an aqueous solution instead of real body fluids. A second study found a reduction in cadmium concentrations after ingestion of Irvingia. The study took place in rats. (6)

What side effects can occur when taking African mango?

A recent study from 2012 investigated the effects of African Mango at different dosages. The results indicate that an application of the seed extract of up to 2,500 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day is safe and well tolerated. No side effects could be observed. (8)

A scientific investigation into the quality of available studies on African mango talks about headaches and sleep disorders and links these two symptoms to the plant. (9)

How the substances contained in African mango behave in an existing pregnancy or in the presence of other diseases has not yet been examined. Therefore, no statements can be made about this.

When and for whom is it useful to take African Mango?

In terms of its assumed effects, African Mango is primarily aimed at people who have problems with weight loss and high cholesterol levels. It is a remedy that is supposed to help the person taking the supplement to set certain metabolic processes in motion. It is primarily applied for this purpose.

The classic areas of application include:

  • Stimulation of the metabolism
  • Fat reduction
  • Reduction of appetite
  • Regulation of the blood sugar level
  • Reduction of LDL cholesterol in the blood
  • Detoxification
  • Nutrient absorption

There is no clear scientific evidence for every effect described. However, you can take the herbal extract not only during an acute phase, but also prophylactically.

Because no serious side effects or interactions of African mango are known so far, you can experiment with the dose and find out what is good for you.

What parts of the African Mango plant are used?

The African mango is enormously versatile and can be processed in various ways. African tribes started using the bark and leaves for medicinal purposes early on. They also used the wood to improve the stability of their huts, among other things.

The mango-like fruit of the plant is eaten fresh or processed into jam, jelly, juice or wine. The kernel can be used to make a dark paste that is used to thicken dishes.

What do African Mango products cost?

Preparations of the Irvingia plant are usually not particularly cost-intensive. Depending on the size of the package, the price varies, but it rarely exceeds the 40 euro mark. The following table will give you an overview of the current prices.

The most expensive preparations come in powder form, although you have to bear in mind that you will be supplied for longer with one pack in total than with 3-month packs of 90 to 100 capsules or tablets.

What types of African Mango are available?

When looking for the right African Mango supplement, you should ask yourself how you want to take the substance. There are two types you can choose between: the solid and the liquid form.

Both dosage forms have subcategories. In solid form, African Mango is available as tablets and capsules; in liquid form, it is available as juice, powder (for mixing) and drops. Each type has advantages and disadvantages.

African Mango in solid form

Processed Irvingia in solid form includes capsules and tablets. If you prefer an uncomplicated intake without preparation and have no problem swallowing, these preparations are just right for you.

Capsules and tablets encase the active ingredient in a coating. This is often made of gelatine and therefore not vegan or vegetarian, but it also ensures that no taste comes through. Due to the smooth surface, the capsule slips directly into the throat and is easy to swallow.

The disadvantage of capsules and tablets is the given dosage. The buyer can adjust the number of tablets as needed, but does not have the freedom to measure the African Mango to the milligram.

Supplements that are offered in solid form often contain several remedies at the same time. The positive aspect is that with an all-in-one product you can do without other food supplements. However, a con-argument lies in the reduced influence on the other ingredients.

African Mango in liquid form

Especially if you have problems swallowing capsules and tablets, you can resort to liquid concentrates of African Mango. These are available as juice, powder and drops.

All three dosage forms allow for individual and independent dosing. The consumer is freer and can also easily integrate the product into the diet. This works particularly well in smoothies or in home-pressed juices. Because the product is "pure" and without a coating, it is more often vegan.

The additional expense of liquid preparations is small, but cannot be dismissed out of hand. The powder has to be stirred into the liquid independently, the drops counted or the juice measured.

Buying in stock is also more difficult with liquid preparations. Irvingia in powder form is dry before processing and therefore tends to have a longer shelf life. Concentrates in liquid form need to be stored in a cool, dark place and even then have a shorter shelf life. After opening, juices and co. can quickly keel over.

How should African Mango be dosed?

There are still no guidelines for the dosage of African Mango. Science is not yet ready to make recommendations. Most products contain 600 to 900 milligrams of the seed extract per capsule.

A study on possible side effects and interactions when taking the plant set a maximum dose of 2500 milligrams per kilogram per day and could not find any adverse effects.

Tablets are available with up to 6000 milligrams of the medicinal plant. However, effects could already be observed with a dosage of 150 milligrams per day. (2, 8)

For a start with African Mango, we recommend a moderate dosage of less than 1500 milligrams. If you do not experience any intolerances, you can increase the amount as needed. In case of doubt, please discuss this with your family doctor.

What are the alternatives to African Mango?

Besides African Mango, there are other active ingredients that can help with the weight loss process, detoxification and optimisation of cholesterol levels. You can find some examples in the following table:

  • Chlorella algae: They are said to have detoxifying effects, but there is relative consensus in research about the effects of different algae, such as chlorella algae (10).
  • Blueberries: Said to lower LDL cholesterol. Blueberries contain anthocyanins, which have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. One study was able to observe that with the administration of anthocyanins larger amounts of cholesterol could be excreted via the intestine (11).

Considering the effect of African Mango on fat metabolism, the alternative is self-observation. If you want to lose weight, you should first calculate your daily calorie needs and adjust your diet so that you eat fewer calories than you consume.

You can support this process with exercise and sports sessions. Even if you are ambitious, you should not eat less than 1,200 calories a day, otherwise your metabolism may slow down.
