Standard or heavy duty aluminium foil - what to look out for?

As you would expect, aluminium foil comes in different types depending on the purpose you want to use it for. This time we focus on the type of cooking and that is how we can find these slight differences. Learning to recognise their characteristics will undoubtedly help you to find the right one.

Standard. We could say that standard aluminium foils are the thinnest. Although the exact measurements will depend on the manufacturer, they tend to be 0.010 mm thin or 0.014 mm thick. In both cases, it is an ideal paper for use in the home, for wrapping food and foodstuffs, for use with heat and everything else you can imagine.

High strength. Many times we require a paper that is a little more resistant. Traditional foil tears and wrinkles very easily. This type of aluminium foil is ideal for industrial purposes, in a restaurant or for use in extreme temperatures. It is a bit more rigid, we can create different shapes such as lids or containers.

Purchasing criteria

It is important to consider certain factors in order to be able to decide for yourself and not be fooled. Although aluminium foil is a fairly simple product, we can discover certain specifications that will be better for some purposes than others. Discover the best buying recommendations below.

Thickness refers to how thin the aluminium foil is. In the case of this foil, it is very important that it is very thin so that it can be easily shaped. Just as standard foil has a specific size, so does heavy duty foil. This can make the difference between cooking a food on the grill or wrapping it.

Minimum thickness Recommendation
Standard 0.005 mm Wrapping of containers and vegetables, medium lid.
Heavy duty 0.09 mm Covering of grills, ovens, durable lid, containers

We can find aluminium foil in two presentations that will help us to carry out our work in the kitchen more quickly and efficiently. This is especially important when we want to wrap and use larger quantities of foil or if we would like to wrap the same size of food or objects.

Roll. This is the most common and easiest to find. Generally its packaging comes with a cutter or you can buy a spare for yours. It consists of a single long piece of aluminium foil that is rolled up. We recommend this presentation for packaging products of different dimensions.

Sheets. This is a fairly simple presentation. It consists of a certain number of sheets of the same size. It is ideal for wrapping objects or food that are always of similar size, such as a sandwich or as a lid for our favourite container. They are available in small, medium and large sizes.

Refers to the elasticity or hardness when using or spreading a metal on a surface. In this case aluminium foil for cooking. For some purposes we need a more flexible foil, while for others we will need one that is as rigid as possible. These are the two designations and their most common uses.

Soft tempered. This is the most common for wrapping chocolates, sandwiches, potatoes, among others. It is very malleable and easy to use. The only drawback is that it tears quickly or barely wrinkles. However, it meets all the characteristics of standard or heavy-duty aluminium foil and is recommended for all purposes.

Hard tempered. It is difficult to find in any traditional aluminium foil roll as its use is a little more specific. As it is more rigid, it can be found in prefabricated shapes such as trays or containers. We could also shape it manually. This product is recommended for transporting and insulating foodstuffs.

We always want to give you the tools to see all the benefits that a product can give you. This is the case of accessories, in the case of aluminium foil it is very simple; either you have it or not. By this we mean the plus that can make us as customers loyal to a particular brand.

Cutter box. This consists of a cardboard box that usually has a serrated opening. The first thing you will have to do is to break the holes on the sides so that the roll is fixed. Then you can take out the foil and cut it as you wish. Prefer this accessory in case you don't have a foil cutter at home.

Warning line. Not all aluminium foils include this and it is very useful if you like to be always prepared with your kitchen utensils. It warns you by means of a specific colour or design that there is not enough foil left. We recommend this feature if you can't be very attentive to this factor and don't run out of paper.
