  • There are day and night creams as well as eye creams with anti-ageing effects. The ingredients, the quality and the skin type play a major role in choosing the right type of product.

The Best Anti Aging Face Cream: Our Picks

Buying and evaluation criteria for anti-ageing face creams

Before buying an anti-ageing face cream, you should pay attention to the following aspects:

Because these evaluation and purchase criteria can strongly influence the effect on your skin. To help you find the right anti-ageing face cream, we have summarised the criteria for you below.

Ingredients

The ingredients play the most important role when buying anti-ageing products. The most common ingredients in anti-ageing face creams are:

  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Retinol A
  • Vitamin C + E
  • Glycolic acid
  • Alpha lipoic acid
  • Argan oil
  • Shea butter
  • Caffeine

Each of these ingredients has its own effect. So that you know exactly which ingredients your anti-ageing face cream should have, we have described these and their effects.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid makes the skin thicker and firmer by absorbing moisture.

Retinol A

In the ageing process, the skin loses vitamin A. When you apply retinol to the skin, it converts into vitamin A acid. As a result, retinol A smoothes out small wrinkles and removes pigmentation spots.

Vitamin C + E

Vitamin C promotes collagen formation in the body. It stops skin ageing enormously, especially by lightening pigmentation spots. Vitamin E, also called tocopherle, moisturises the skin and, together with vitamin C, stimulates collagen production.

Glycolic acid

The small granules of glycolic acid act like a peel on the skin, removing old skin flakes. This allows the skin to better absorb the cream and fight signs of ageing. This includes shrinking pores on the face and reducing sun damage and acne scars.

Alpha lipoic acid

Alpha lipoic acid stops cell ageing and tightens the contours on the applied area.

Argan oil

The application of argan oil makes the skin supple and smoothes it. It also stimulates the formation of new cells.

Shea butter

Shea butter nourishes, cares for and protects the skin. It has a regenerating effect on the facial skin.

Caffeine

Caffeine supplies the skin and cells with blood, nutrients and oxygen. As a result, the cells have more energy and start to form anew. This tightens the skin, reduces bags under the eyes and stops the general ageing of the skin.

Quality

The quality of anti-ageing face creams is very important to achieve a good effect on the skin. Some anti-aging face creams have certificates or even offer you a money-back guarantee.

When buying anti-aging products, you should pay particular attention to the price-performance ratio. It is not always the most expensive creams that have to be of good quality. Most anti-ageing face creams have a high price because of their brand or expensive packaging.

Because cheap anti-aging products can sometimes have the same ingredients and thus the same effect as expensive products. Always read the composition of the ingredients carefully on the package insert. It is also advisable to get tips and recommendations from a doctor or pharmacist.

Tip: Make sure that your anti-ageing face cream has been dermatologically tested. This test guarantees that the pH value of your skin remains constant. If it changes, your skin may dry out or you may develop rashes.

Skin type & consistency

In order to take care of your face and counteract the ageing process, it is important to know your skin type. Because everyone's skin is different. Men and women also have different skin types. As a rule, there are four different skin types:

  • Dry skin
  • Normal skin
  • Oily skin
  • Combination skin

To find out your skin type, consult a doctor. Have you determined your skin type? Then all you need is the right product for your face. The package insert of an anti-ageing face cream usually states which skin type the product is suitable for. In addition to the skin type, the consistency of the anti-aging face cream is also important. This is because drier skin needs more moisture than oily skin. The consistency of the face cream should feel pleasant when applied.

Fragrance

All anti-ageing face creams are characterised by their individual fragrances. These provide a feel-good moment in your beauty routine. Since some creams take longer to work in, it is important that the fragrance smells pleasant to you.

There are scents that are very odourless, but also scents that smell very strongly of perfume.

The fragrance should not be acrid or aggressive. Which fragrance is best depends on your taste. After all, you have to feel comfortable when applying the anti-ageing face cream.

Packaging

Anti aging face creams are packaged very differently. The type of packaging varies depending on the manufacturer and the amount of face cream. Most anti-ageing face creams are packaged as follows:

  • Tube
  • Jar
  • Pump dispenser

The tube packaging method is, more commonly used for large quantities of anti aging creams such as hand creams or even body creams. You can easily put these in your handbag and take them with you. However, the last remnants are difficult to empty. The jar is a slightly more luxurious option and feels more valuable as it is often made of glass packaging.

Unfortunately, the jar is harder to take anywhere because it is a bit bulky. With the pump dispenser, you have the advantage of refilling. It is also very hygienic. However, you can't see how much face cream is left in the packaging. Which type of packaging you prefer is up to you and you can decide according to your taste.

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying anti-ageing face cream

In order to inform you about the effectiveness of anti-ageing face creams and to explain the current state of science, we have summarised the most important information in the following sections.

What is an anti-ageing face cream and what effect does it have?

The skin is a very important part of the human body. When the natural ageing process begins, it becomes thinner, drier and more wrinkled. In addition, environmental influences such as stress or UV radiation play a role in skin ageing. (1) Anti aging preparations produce the following effects:

  • Delaying the ageing process
  • Creation of a feel-good effect
  • Improves the appearance and texture of the skin
  • Smoothing of wrinkles
  • Reduction of unevenness

An anti-ageing face cream moisturises the skin and counteracts skin ageing. In addition, you provide your face with many valuable nutrients and vitamins. Regular use of the face cream makes your skin look more radiant and younger. Because you feel a very vital and fresh skin feeling. Studies have already confirmed that anti-ageing products can delay the natural ageing process.

In addition, a greater feel-good effect was produced. Therefore, the so-called anti-agingeffect can be confirmed by the special face creams. (2, 3) Anti Aging products make wrinkles, large pores or impurities on the face visibly disappear or reduce. The most important ingredients that achieve this effect include hyaluronic acid, retinol A and vitamins C and E. They are usually much richer in fats and oils than normal face creams.

Some anti-aging face creams pamper the skin with precious extracts of ruby, rock crystal or gemstone. These valuable minerals care for demanding skin in particular and give it a natural strength.

After a four-week treatment of an anti-aging face cream, a scientific study found a significant skin improvement. Even deeper and larger wrinkles could be reduced. (4) The use of a special anti aging neck cream also shows a significant improvement in the skin texture. According to one study, regular use of the product improved the appearance of the skin in 95% of patients. (5)

Wrinkles can be reduced by a maximum of 20 %.

An American study, on the other hand, found that an anti-ageing face cream can smooth out imperfections as well as small wrinkles. The products strengthen the skin and make it look younger, but cannot completely smooth out large wrinkles. (6) Stiftung Warentest has found that anti-ageing ingredients such as retinol or vitamin C have only a short or minor effect.

Therefore, a permanent skin rejuvenation and wrinkle reduction cannot be completely proven. (7) Other studies also criticise a lifelong anti-aging effect. Face creams with anti-ageing ingredients do make the skin look younger, but for how long is not clear. Because there is no precise evidence that the effect on the skin is permanent. But is a long-lasting anti-aging effect important to you? Then a continuous and lifelong use of anti-aging products is advisable. (3, 8)

What types of anti-ageing face creams are there and which one suits me? Transition

As a rule, anti aging face creams are differentiated between day as well as night creams and special eye creams. We have listed the most important advantages and disadvantages for you in the table.

Type Advantages Disadvantages
Day cream Care for the whole day, Protects against environmental influences No regeneration of the skin at night, Can only be used during the day/morning
Night cream Richer and oilier cream, Regeneration of stressed skin No protection during the day, Can only be used in the evening
Eye cream Gentler but still intensive effect in the eye area, Application not dependent on time of day Effect only around the eye area, No protection factor for the whole face

Day cream

Apply the day cream to your freshly cleansed face in the morning. This provides your skin with moisture as well as important vitamins and nutrients throughout the day. The product therefore offers you protective care for the whole day. An anti-ageing day cream also protects you from environmental influences such as sunlight, because it is even available with a sun protection factor (SPF). This way you can prevent the formation of age spots and free radicals. According to a study, the anti-aging effect could be enhanced by a face cream with SPF protection.

The effect was shown in the lightening of the skin. (9) Even in cold seasons, you can protect your skin from drying out and the cold air with a moisturising day cream. Therefore, in the cold winter months, more oily day creams are recommended than in the summer. You can also apply the product under your make-up. This type of face cream is therefore well suited for people who spend a lot of time outdoors, whether in summer or winter. Furthermore, you can also apply the anti-aging day cream under your make-up without any problems.

Advantages
  • Care for the whole day
  • Protects against environmental influences
  • SPF often included
  • Suitable for all seasons
  • Can be applied under make-up
Disadvantages
  • No regeneration of the skin at night
  • Can only be applied during the day/morning
  • Can be washed off by sweating, exercise or water

Applying the cream in the morning only protects and tightens your skin during the day and not at night. In addition, the cream can come off due to heavy or rapid sweating, such as during sports. The day cream can also no longer be fully effective in water. So are you often in the water or do you do a lot of sports during the day? Then it is better not to use a day cream.

Night cream

An anti-ageing night cream is applied to your clean face at night before you go to bed. It usually contains more oils and lipids and is therefore richer than a day cream. This way, your skin is well nourished during the night and has time to regenerate. The night cream is also responsible for repairing stressed skin from the day or age. Because while you sleep, the body has enough time to take in the important nutrients and regenerate the skin.

Therefore, the effect is more intense on your face. The skin also looks fresher the next day. A study confirms that the appearance of facial ageing was effectively improved by an anti-ageing night cream. Included were a better skin texture, skin firmness and the smoothing of wrinkles. (10)

Advantages
  • Richer and oilier cream
  • Regeneration of stressed skin
  • Better supply and absorption of vitamins and minerals
  • Fresher effect in the morning
Disadvantages
  • No protection during the day
  • Can only be used in the evening
  • Cream can spread on your pillow

Unfortunately, the cream does not offer you all-day protection because you only apply it at night. In addition, a very greasy night cream can spread on your pillow.

Eye cream

An anti-ageing eye cream, on the other hand, is applied specifically to the eye area. The cream provides the eye area with many powerful nutrients. You can apply the product in the morning or in the evening, depending on your needs and comfort. Therefore, with this product you are not dependent on the time of day. The Anti Aging Eye Cream is a little gentler than the day or night creams. This is because the eyes are more sensitive, as the skin is thinner here than on the rest of the face.

Despite all this, the product has an intensive and special effect against wrinkles under the eye. In addition, the cream can reduce signs of tiredness, especially in the early morning. This is because the product has a very refreshing effect on the eyes. As with the anti-ageing day cream, you can also apply the special eye cream together with your make-up.

Advantages
  • Gentle yet intensive effect in the eye area
  • Application does not depend on the time of day
  • Reduction of signs of tiredness
  • Can be applied under make-up
Disadvantages
  • Effect only around the eye area
  • No protection factor for the whole face
  • Usually more expensive

However, eye creams only have an anti-ageing effect around the eye. This is because you only apply the cream to one area of the face. Therefore, the eye cream does not offer your whole face a protection factor against, for example, UV radiation during the day. In addition, anti-ageing creams for the eye area are usually more expensive than day or night creams.

When and how do I apply an anti-ageing face cream?

As a rule, you can apply an anti-ageing face cream in the morning after getting up or in the evening before going to bed. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. You decide which is better for you.
Make sure that you massage the cream well into the mouth and eye areas. Wrinkles often form around the eyes and mouth.

First cleanse your face thoroughly with a peeling or a mask and then apply the anti-ageing face cream evenly to your face, neck and décolleté. You can also apply the cream only to certain parts of your face, for example where you have more wrinkles. Then massage the face cream into your skin in circular motions for longer.

When should I start using an anti-ageing face cream?

It is worthwhile to start using anti-ageing products at a young age. If you start early, you can prevent wrinkles and signs of ageing. The older the skin, the more moisturising the face cream should be. This is because the face is usually more prone to pimples at a young age. Moisturising creams that are very rich can therefore lead to blemishes.

Cellular activity generally slows down from the age of 25. From this age, you can start using weak anti-aging face creams. However, in your twenties, a moisturising cream is also sufficient. From the age of mid/late 30s, anti-ageing face creams are advisable. When you start is ultimately up to you. Do you want to prevent your skin from ageing? Then you can start with a light dosage in your mid-20s. If you want to smooth out existing wrinkles, then a stronger product is recommended.

Who should use an anti-ageing face cream?

Anti aging face creams are useful for both women and men from middle age. Do you want to counteract the natural ageing process, smooth wrinkles and make your skin look younger? Then anti-wrinkle creams are just right for you. There are many anti-ageing creams for the face on the market. You are free to choose the one that best suits you, your needs and your skin type. Alternatively, get a second opinion from a doctor.

How much do anti-ageing face creams cost?

The prices of anti-ageing face creams vary greatly. This is because prices vary enormously depending on the brand, quantity, skin type or ingredients. In general, the price is somewhat higher than for normal creams due to the special active ingredients.
Expensive does not mean higher quality.

You can get cheap products for as little as 5 €, while very expensive products can cost up to 1000 €.

It's hard to say how much you need to spend on a good anti-ageing face cream. It's best to look at customer reviews on the internet or get advice from a specialist. The more complex the ingredients and the more moisturising the product, the more expensive it is. However, you often pay this much money for the brand as well as the marketing of the product.

Where can I buy anti-ageing face creams?

You can buy anti-ageing face creams almost everywhere these days. The products are sold in specialised shops as well as in drugstores, supermarkets, pharmacies or online shops. In a specialised shop, you can get individual advice and buy an anti-ageing face cream that suits your skin type and needs. Some popular shops for these beauty products are:

  • Dm
  • Douglas
  • Lidl
  • Rossman
  • Rituals

However, you don't have this personal service on the internet. Instead, you have a wider range of different anti-ageing products. You can compare them with each other and read the individual customer reviews.

What are the alternatives to an anti-aging face cream?

There are many alternatives to anti aging face creams. The most commonly used products besides anti-ageing face creams are face serums, masks and peelings. We have listed the advantages and disadvantages of each product in a table.

Anti Aging Product Advantages Disadvantages
Anti Aging Face Serum Oily and moisturising for the skin, Deep penetration into the skin, Suitable for everyday use Usually more expensive, Oily and sticky consistency, Long absorption into the skin
Anti Aging Face Mask Strengthens the skin, Removes pores and impurities Long absorption into the skin, Often the mask must be removed after use, Accessories advisable
Anti Aging Facial Peeling Refreshing, Cleansing the skin, Rids the skin of flakes Ample water is needed, Accessories advisable

The Anti Aging Face Serum is very oily and moisturising for the skin. It can work deeper into the skin than most creams. In addition, the serum is suitable for everyday use, as you can easily take it with you and apply it anywhere. However, it is usually more expensive than the other anti-ageing face products. In addition, the oily and sticky consistency usually takes longer to be fully absorbed into the skin. The anti-ageing face mask strengthens the skin and removes pores and impurities such as pimples.

It is especially helpful if you suffer from dry skin. Unfortunately, you only need a little time, because the mask must first be absorbed into the face. This can take up to 20 minutes. After that, it needs to be rinsed off your face frequently. Furthermore, accessories such as a brush are often needed to apply the mask.

Brushes are ideal for applying your anti-aging face mask to the skin. They help you to distribute the mask evenly on the skin. That way you don't get your fingers dirty.

The anti-ageing face scrub is very refreshing. It cleanses the skin of dirt and rids it of flakes. However, it requires a lot of water, so you can't just use it on the go. Also, you often need accessories. A sponge or brush can be helpful when massaging the scrub onto the skin.
