The Best Apothecary Cabinet: Our Picks
Pharmacist's cupboard: buying and evaluation criteria
In order to find the right pharmacist's cabinet for you, you should consider a few aspects before buying. To give you some orientation, we have collected them for you.
In the following, we explain what we mean by these keywords.
First of all, it is of course important how big you want your apothecary cabinet to be. Before buying, measure exactly how much space you have available and take into account that you may need a little space between the wall and the cabinet. Large manufacturers usually use uniform standard widths, although special intermediate sizes are sometimes offered.
|Type||standard widths (in centimetres)|
|Base unit or wall unit||30, 40, 45, 50, 60, 80, 90, 100, 120|
|Tall unit||30, 40, 45, 50, 60|
If you need a custom-made unit, it is best to contact the manufacturer. They will try to find a suitable solution for you. Otherwise, you can of course commission a carpenter of your choice with the project. Be aware, however, that custom-made products usually cost more than mass-produced products.
The design of your apothecary cabinet will usually stay with you for several years. So choose something that you will still like. For example, what do you think of the cosy country house style? After all, vintage furniture is very trendy. Or do you prefer a more modern look? Scandinavian simplicity brings calm to your home.
No matter what your preferences are, you should also consider the rest of your interior. Harmonising styles usually look good. If you are brave and want to try something new, you can deliberately create contrasts.
Last but not least, the material of your apothecary cabinet is also important. Again, what does the rest of the interior look like? Apart from that, you can not only go for the classic wood, but also choose a front made of metal or with a glass top.
This creates a real eye-catcher. Plastic, on the other hand, scores with its low price and low maintenance. Pay attention to the cabinet's own weight. If it is too heavy, it can literally make it difficult to use.
Before buying, think about what you want to fill your apothecary cabinet with. Kitchen cabinets have different requirements than a cabinet that sorts your tools. For example, if you want to store a lot of small items, it makes sense to leave a little extra space between each drawer. This way you can easily reach them without knocking everything else over.
Pharmacist's cabinet: frequently asked questions and answers
Buying a new piece of furniture can sometimes be a lengthy process. We give you answers to the most frequently asked questions so that you can make an informed decision.
What is an apothecary cabinet?
Instead, an apothecary cupboard is a cupboard without a door. To access the contents, the entire cabinet can be pulled out on rails. In this way, the items contained are easily accessible from both sides.
Who is a pharmacist's cabinet suitable for?
It also makes an excellent niche shelf - for example under the stairs or in the workshop. And why not bring the principle of an apothecary cupboard into the dressing room? The possibilities are almost endless. By the way, an apothecary cupboard can also be retrofitted. However, you should pay particular attention to the right dimensions.
What types of apothecary cupboards are there?
|Can be pulled out as a whole||Complete inventory can be easily seen and overlooked||Individual items can be moved by others, usually more expensive, can get heavy|
|Individual drawers can be pulled out||Individual items can be easily removed, usually cheaper||To see everything, each individual drawer must be opened|
The decision is yours. Choose the one you like best.
How can I build an apothecary cabinet myself?
What goes into an apothecary cabinet?
It's best to think about what you want to use it for before you buy it. If you have a lot of heavy items, a cupboard with several drawers makes sense. It is important to watch the weight of your wardrobe. If it is too heavy, it may be very difficult to slide it open.
How do I organise an apothecary cabinet?
In the kitchen, you can group your food by type. Each level of your apothecary cupboard is then filled with one of these. Ideally, you should clean it with a damp cloth.
Ideally, you should buy a labelling machine. That way you won't have to think about where you put the baking powder.
Open packages of pasta, sugar, etc. can be placed in clear containers so you can keep track of them. Your collection of biscuit cutters will also find its own place in a storage box.
What can I do if my apothecary cupboard squeaks or does not move in completely?
In other cases, the mechanism is installed in such a way that the manufacturer has to replace the slide rails. Sometimes it is also necessary to readjust the dampers. To do this, check with a spirit level whether the cupboard is crooked. If it is, empty it and turn the feet to adjust the height.
If the wardrobe is built differently, there is an alternative procedure. To do this, adjust it using the Allen key (at the back of the bottom rail). There should be 2 holes in the rail and on its sides where it fits. By adjusting the screws, the cabinet can be brought into a horizontal position.
Sometimes it is enough to tighten a small screw if the apothecary cabinet causes problems. Finding the screw first, however, can be a little tricky. With the bottom rail closed and without an Allen key, you can pull the drawer out as far as it will go and then lift the cover. Underneath you will find the screws for adjustment.
What alternatives are there to an apothecary cabinet?
|Cabinets with large drawers||Another option where the contents are easily accessible and easy to keep track of. There are variants where the internal drawers are hidden behind a common front.|
|Corner cabinet / Rondell / Magic Corner||All corners and angles are optimally utilised. Pots and pans in particular can be stored well in the Rondell or Magic Corner thanks to an ingenious mechanism.|
In the end, the decision is yours. Bear in mind that with more complex systems usually comes a higher price.
The apothecary cabinet is an exception among storage furniture - in the sense that its name does not refer to its intended use. Instead, you can fill the completely pull-out shelves with everything you want to have a quick overview of. A practical feature is that the cupboard is accessible from both the left and the right.
