In general, it can be said that aronia juice has a positive influence on physical health due to the large number of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
The flavonoids provide the greatest medical benefit. Through their ability to bind free radicals, they reduce the risk of degenerative damage to our cardiovascular system, skin, eyes and joints. How should I dose chokeberry juice?
Depending on how chokeberry is taken, the appropriate daily dose may vary. The culprit is prussic acid, which is contained in small concentrations in chokeberry.

What alternatives are there to chokeberry?
If you are particularly concerned about the antioxidant effect of the chokeberry, you should stick to blue fruits. This is because anthocyanins are a blue pigment. Suitable alternatives here would be acai berries, elderberries, blackberries or blueberries.
What other aronia products are there?
Compared to juices, powders and capsules have the advantage that they can be kept longer and without refrigeration. In addition, you can mix the pure fruit or powder with other foods, for example in shakes or muesli.
Jams, on the other hand, usually have a sweeter taste and are therefore more pleasant to consume, but of course they also have a lower content of valuable ingredients due to the further processing.
Decision: What types of aronia juice are there and which is right for you?
Aronia juice is available in two different forms. A distinction is made between mother juice and aronia nectar. Basically, all types of aronia juice have the same effect. They are drunk, absorbed by our body and can thus unfold their effect.
In short, aronia juice is a completely normal food supplement in this respect. Depending on whether you prefer to drink pure or diluted juices, a different aronia product may be right for you. There are also some advantages and disadvantages to differentiating between the two. We will explain these to you in the following.
What distinguishes mother juice and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
As briefly mentioned above, mother juice is aronia juice with one hundred percent fruit content. Due to this property, it has the highest concentration of pure ingredients. Since the product is only pure juice, no other substances are added during processing, so the mother juice is free of additional sugar, preservatives or other additives.
Another advantage is that the ingredients can be quickly absorbed by your body, blood and cells due to their purity. The following table summarises the advantages and disadvantages.
If you want to drink aronia juice for its medicinal benefits and you don't have any problems with its very tart and sour taste, then mother juice is the right thing for you.
You should take care not to drink too much, otherwise the prussic acid can cause stomach problems.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of aronia nectar?
In contrast to mother juice, aronia nectar contains a low fruit content, most traders state it at forty to fifty percent. Besides chokeberry juice, chokeberry nectar usually contains water for dilution, sweeteners such as sugar or natural apple sweetener and possibly other additives such as preservatives. Due to its diluted form, aronia nectar is usually much sweeter and milder in taste, making it easier to drink.
There are also other mixed forms, for example chokeberry-apple nectar or chokeberry-quince nectar. Here, too, the other, usually sweet fruit serves to balance the tart chokeberry flavour.
Due to the higher sugar content and possible preservatives, aronia nectar usually has a longer shelf life. Further advantages and disadvantages are listed in the following table.
Aronianectar is primarily to be classified as a pleasant juice to drink, and less as a food supplement. Thanks to the lower fruit concentration, the tart and sour taste is not as dominant.
However, the medicinal benefit is naturally also lower, as there are fewer active substances per glass.

Depending on whether you prefer pure juice or a diluted version, you can choose between mother juice and aronia nectar. We have listed the advantages and disadvantages of both forms above.
If you would prefer to buy mother juice, but the taste is too tart for you, you can simply dilute it yourself at home and still avoid additives.
Quantity and packaging
Most retailers offer aronia juice either in cartons, called freshness boxes, or in bottles. The cartons are usually larger, holding around three litres. Bottles, on the other hand, contain much less juice, usually only around five hundred to seven hundred millilitres. On average, the bottles are therefore more expensive per litre.
So if you just want to try it for a while, it is worth buying a bottle rather than a big box to start with.
However, it is important to remember that the bottles should be kept refrigerated and consumed quickly, within a few days. The juice in the boxes, on the other hand, can be used unrefrigerated for up to three months after opening. This is due to the special packaging, which prevents oxygen from reaching the juice.
Country of origin
The aronia berry originally comes from North America. In the nineteenth century it came to Russia and from there spread to Eastern Europe. It is very frost-resistant and therefore perfect for these regions.
For some years now, however, more and more farmers in Germany and Austria have been cultivating chokeberry. Aronia juice does not have to come from far away in North America. Usually it is enough to look at regional farmers, especially in Brandenburg, Saxony and Bavaria, where the berry is widespread. Many of the juices produced here also have the organic seal.
Facts worth knowing about aronia juice
Can I make aronia juice myself?
Of course you can make aronia juice yourself. The best way to do this is to use a commercially available juicer. On the internet you can find many recipes on how to refine your aronia juice, for example with cinnamon. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind.
On the one hand, aronia berries are strongly colouring due to their dark colour. If you work with the fresh berries, you should be careful that no juice ends up on your clothes, otherwise the stain cannot be washed out.
On the other hand, you won't get the same product with a juicer as a farmer does when making aronia juice. In agriculture, a steam juicer is usually used, which gently bursts the fruit so that only the juice is collected.
Other components such as seeds and peel are filtered out and processed into aronia powder.
Nevertheless, processing aronia berries can be useful. This way you can combine everything exactly to your taste. Besides chokeberry juice, you can also create jams or chokeberry ice cream.
