When and how did the Asics trainer originate?

The history of the Asics trainer begins in 1949 when Japanese Kihachiro Onitsuka founded a sports shoe company under the name Onitsuka Co.

Over the years, the company diversified its catalogue and strengthened its relationship with athletics, volleyball and long distance running. So much so that, at the beginning of the 1970s, around 70% of the world's main runners wore the Japanese brand's shoes.

Asics is the acronym of the Latin expression 'Anima Sana In Corpore Sano'.

In 1977, the brand introduced its trainers to the North American market, then gained worldwide visibility and also the current name, Asics. Asics is the acronym of the Latin expression 'Anima Sana In Corpore Sano', which means "Sound mind, sound body".

Since then, Asics has established itself as one of the best sporting goods brands, with a focus on running shoes. Today the brand is present in over 100 countries.

The great success of Asics tennis shoes was due to the high investment in technology, so much so that there is even an exclusive research centre of the brand for this.

But in addition to tennis shoes, today Asics also manufactures sports apparel and accessories for basketball, volleyball, athletics, golf, football, martial arts and other sports.

In Brazil, for example, the success is so great that half the production of Asics running shoes is already made here, while the other half is still imported from Asian countries.

What is the main difference in Asics running shoes?

The main differentiating factor of Asics running shoes is in fact the state-of-the-art technology present in them. The brand's history proves that.

In 1990, for example, Asics opened the Sports Science Research Institute in the city of Kobe, Japan. It is in this institute that Asics develops the technological innovations applied in its trainers and shoes.

Did you know that among the athletes sponsored by Asics is Brazilian Adriano Bastos? Adriano is one of the biggest winners of running events in the country and record holder of the Disney Marathon

At the institute, scientists, athletes and coaches work together to create the shoes that will guarantee the best performance.

To give you an idea, there's a 350-metre running track that reproduces different weather conditions, as well as a basketball court, a volleyball court and many other testing environments.

Because of this work, Asics shoes are a reference when it comes to impact absorption systems, anti-overpronation features, rubber soles and waterproof fabrics.

But one of the innovations that became the great differential of Asics tennis shoes was the introduction of the Gel cushioning system.

This system, which is integrated in the toe and heel region, now allows better shock and impact absorption, ensuring maximum cushioning and stability, especially during races.

What are the most current technologies present in Asics trainers?

In addition to the Gel system, which is the most famous technology present in Asics trainers, there are several others that are applied aiming for maximum comfort and better performance for athletes.

These technologies usually vary depending on the model and the purpose of the trainer, according to the sport, for example.

But for you to know the main ones, we will explain below the characteristics of the most current technologies developed today by Asics. See below:

  • Boa system closure: Tying system that allows the shoelace to be adjusted with just one hand to guarantee perfect tension and more stability.
  • Flytefoam: Technology that uses organic fibers, making the midsole 55% lighter and more resistant.
  • AHAR: Super light and resistant rubber sole, located in the most worn areas of the sole.
  • Fluidfit: Stretch fabric applied to the upper that moulds to the feet, offering more comfort.
  • Guidance line: Vertical channel in the sole that guides the direction of the footstep, distributing impact evenly and providing greater efficiency.
  • Impact Guidance System (IGS): Technology that guides the natural movement of the foot, from ankle contact to propulsion.
  • Solyte: Midsole whose material is 50% lighter than EVA, ensuring more cushioning, better propulsion and high durability.
  • Speva: EVA midsole with molecular formulation, which returns to its original state right after the impact.
  • Trusstic system: System that reduces the weight of the sole and ensures stability.
  • Fluidride: Double layer of midsole, one stiffer for stability, the other softer for comfort and cushioning.

Asics trainers: why are these shoes a reference in running sports?

Although it offers models for all types of sports, Asics is actually specialized in running shoes, both those aimed at professionals and amateurs.

And if you're a fan of running sports, you know that a good pair of shoes is indispensable for running success.

After all, the wrong trainer or a low-quality one, instead of helping you, can hinder your performance and even cause damage to your health.

With the high investment in tests and studies by the Asics team, today the brand has what's most advanced for this high-performance sports sector.

To prove that it is always at the forefront of the running segment, in 2013 Asics introduced a trainer that used colours to indicate the performance of runners.

The trainer changed colour according to the athlete's stride. The red colour indicated an average speed of up to 10 km/h; the yellow colour, between 10 and 15 km/h; and the green colour appeared when the athlete reached a speed above 15 km/h.

Not by chance, the brand is currently considered the greatest authority when the subject is running. Just look at the streets and parks to see that most runners are wearing Asics shoes.

How to know if an Asics trainer is original?

Knowing if an Asics trainer is original is not always an easy task, since the design of the fake models is usually very similar.

Therefore, the simplest way to verify whether the product is a replica or not is by the price. If the trainer is much cheaper, be suspicious.

Besides, when you buy the product you can check the IGS, one of the technologies present in Asics trainers as we've already seen in this article.

The IGS consists of small gel blocks that stay in the sole, heel and other strategic regions. But when the trainer is a replica, this gel has only an aesthetical effect and doesn't help to guide the natural movement of the foot.

Another point that you can verify is that the sole of Asics trainers usually has the Guidance Line, which is that cut that pierces the sole.

This technology is not always present in fake Asics trainers and, when it is, it is also more decorative than functional.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Asics tennis shoes?

The greatest advantage of Asics tennis shoes is the high technology applied both to ensure comfort and efficiency in sports.

In addition, it is possible to find the right Asics trainer model for any goal or situation, including for casual use. Not to mention that the brand offers men's, women's and children's shoes.

Another advantage is that even the cheapest trainers offer quality and resistance.

However, just like every other product, Asics trainer also has some disadvantages. This trainer is not free of presenting manufacturing defects, especially if we consider the models manufactured in Brazil.

That is, another disadvantage of Asics trainers is that the most current and top of the line models are still imported. Even so, the customer service is one of the brand's strong points.

Below, you can see the main advantages and disadvantages of Asics trainers:

Advantages
  • High technology
  • Durable and comfortable

Purchase criteria: How to choose the right Asics trainer for you

Before buying a trainer, we recommend that you prioritise the best one according to your type of step and purpose of use. But that's not all.

Below you check out what are the main factors that should be considered before buying Asics trainers. Take a look:

  • Sporty or casual
  • Type of cushioning
  • Short or high top
  • Masculine, feminine and infantile

In the next lines we explain how to analyse each of these criteria.

Sporty or casual

Asics offers a variety of models that can be used for sports or casual wear.

If your goal is to buy a sports shoe, pay attention to the category, since the models are created specifically for each type of sport.

For example, the Asics Gel Nimbus is the favourite of runners for training and races, since the cushioning is the strong point of this trainer.

But if you're looking for an Asics trainer for trails and off-road adventures, models like the Asics Gel Fuji Racer is ideal because it's lightweight and has high locks in the sole.

On the other hand, if you opt for the casual Asics trainer, you can choose from a good variety of designs and colours, from the most stripped down to the classic ones with the three intersecting lines.

Not to mention the models in collaboration with artists, made in canvas, leather or suede. It is worth mentioning that the casual trainers are under the tutelage of other brands that belong to Asics, such as, for example, Onitsuka Tiger.

Type of cushioning

If you want maximum performance and comfort it is also essential to consider the type of cushioning of the Asics trainer. The brand has four categories, see the characteristics of each:

  • Cushioning: The shoes of this category, also called Premium, are recommended for beginner runners or for those who seek maximum cushioning, in daily and long-distance training sessions and races.
  • Cushioning with stability: This category of Asics tennis shoes also features stability control systems. Here, the trainers have a midsole with two types of density, one being firmer in the midfoot region.
  • Intermediate: The Asics trainers with intermediate cushioning are ideal for those who look for a firmer model, since they are indicated for daily training, medium and long distance races.
  • Performance: Here you will find models for those who have more experience in running, since the shoes of this category are lighter and lower profile, and indicated for pace trainings, fast and middle-distance races.
  • Competition: Asics competition shoes have a lower midsole and minimal cushioning. Therefore, they are recommended for experienced runners who are already used to light and firm shoes.

Short or high top

Another factor that you should consider before buying Asics tennis shoes is the type of upper, more specifically the height of the shaft. This factor can influence not only your comfort, but also the style you create.

The Asics high-top can be used in basketball and wrestling.

For example, the Asics high-top can be used in basketball and wrestling to ensure greater stability for the ankle, or to create a more modern and casual style.

However, most of the Asics models geared towards sports are the short-strap models, which are ideal for training, the gym and running.

In addition to choosing between the short or the high top, also take a look at the material used to make the upper, which should be comfortable and practical.

The most current material is Mesh, which is a type of polyester mesh with open wefts, which ensures lightness, flexibility and greater internal ventilation for the feet.

Men's, women's and children's

Finally, it is worth noting that Asics offers trainers for the whole family. That is, you will be able to find men's, women's and children's Asics trainers.

All Asics trainers feature high technology and quality materials, which ensure comfort and durability. However, depending on the category, you can find varied colours and designs.

Of course, in this case, it is also essential to pay attention to the numbering of the trainers to ensure the comfort and efficiency of the shoes.

In the case of children's trainers, Asics offers models according to the age group. Take a look:

  • Pre-school: from 1 to 3 years old
  • Infantile: from 4 to 6 years old
  • Children: from 7 to 12 years old
