Welcome to ReviewBox Brasil. Today we are going to talk about pram, one of the most important items when assembling the outfit for your child. For this reason, it is necessary to be careful and attentive when choosing. This stroller serves as a cradle while you and the baby are away from home, so it must be safe, comfortable and functional. Some models are quite versatile and can be adapted to different styles. One differentiating feature of modern pram models is the practicality to open and close. Some models are so easy to handle that you can do all this using only one hand, a great advantage for mums and dads loaded with stuff. Learn all about these prams throughout this guide.

Summary

  • The pram can be used for walks in the street or even inside the house, for the baby to take a nap in the afternoon while staying close to the mother, so she can move the pram and nurture him.
  • There are different styles of prams: for one, two or even three children; 3 in 1 prams (Moses cradle, pushchair and baby comforter); models with various reclining options; with 3 or 4 wheels; among others.
  • An important factor that changes from one pram to the other is the way they close: the umbrella style, lighter, practical to open, close and easy to carry and the envelope style, which folds horizontally and is bigger.

Waiting for a baby is one of the most important times in the life of a woman and her partner, no wonder the anxiety starts soon after the couple finds out the news. What is a pram and where to use it?

The first thing you should keep in mind when choosing a pram is to think about how it will be used in your day to day life. This accessory, just like any other, must adapt to your lifestyle. If you are buying a model for outings outside the home, see for what types of terrain the wheels of the pram are appropriate (grass, dirt, concrete) and consider its stability.

If you are going to use the pram frequently, choose a model that is more practical to handle (open and close) and to guide.

There are 2 types of closures for the pushchair: umbrella or envelope style. The first is practical to open and close (with just one hand), but is a simpler model with few accessories. The envelope style pram closes as if you were folding it. This model has several accessories and is generally bigger and heavier than the others, taking up more space at home and in the car. Also take into consideration the size of the pram, its weight and width. The pram should fit in the boot of your car, in your home, and should fit through the doors in and out of your home. To know if the model has adequate dimensions, check the measurements of the pram when open and closed. Regarding the seat, it should be at least 28cm wide. The handlebar height is also an important factor, some models are fixed and others have the height adjustable to the size of the person who is driving. If you are very tall or short, opt for a pram with adjustable handlebars.

Pay attention also to the pieces, which should have smooth and rounded edges and never have tips, to avoid accidents. It is also cool to opt for carts in which the parts are removable, for easy cleaning. After you have decided which model suits your lifestyle, check if it has the Inmetro seal, the organ that inspects if the objects are safe or not. We have listed the main advantages and disadvantages of the pram. We have not considered a specific model but the general characteristics of this accessory:

Advantages
  • There are several types: with 3 or 4 wheels, with Travel System, for twins, etc.
  • There are 2 styles of closing the pram: envelope and umbrella
  • Some come with several accessories such as baby comfort, Moses and adjustable bonnet
  • There are models of several price ranges
Disadvantages
  • Some models are restricted to certain age groups
  • Some models take up a lot of space
  • Large and wide models may not pass through all the doors and neither fit in all the car models

Which pram is recommended for each age?

There is a model of pram for each phase of your baby. For newborns, the ideal is the 3 in 1 pram (Travel System) because it provides more comfort and safety for the baby. Besides, it comes with the right accessories for this phase of life: cradle, Moses and baby comfort.

If your baby is 2 years old or more, it is recommended to choose a 3-wheeled pram, because it is more stable and comfortable for any kind of ride (in squares, parks, malls, etc.). As babies can already stand upright at this age, this model guarantees more safety. For children aged 3 years or more, the use of the pram is no longer so important, because the child can already walk by itself. However, you can continue to use it as long as you respect the maximum weight limit that the pram can support.

What are the types of baby carriages?

There are several types of prams, they differ in size, weight, style of wheels, indicated uses, way of closing, among other characteristics. There is an ideal model for each family. The most popular are: the Travel System, umbrella, envelope, 3 or 4 wheels and the model for twins. Although they have different names, these models are well known and we will explain each one of them:

Pram Travel System

This model is equipped with baby comfort that can be used in the car or fitted at the base of the cart, and may come with basket Moses. Also called 3 in 1 pram, this model is practical and can be used by newborn babies. What changes about it is that, because it is composed of 2 or 3 pieces, it takes up a lot more space in the house or car.

Three Wheel Stroller

One of the main characteristics of this model is that it is very safe because the rear wheels are bigger with inflatable tyres (similar to those on bicycles), which guarantee stability on any type of terrain. It is ideal for parents who enjoy walking, light jogging or hiking, as it allows them to practice sports with their baby. When the terrain is very difficult, just tilt it to support the weight of the pram on the rear wheels, be careful not to overturn.

Umbrella style pram

Also called umbrella, the umbrella style pram is the most practical model, because it has a quick and easy closing and when closed it is very compact. But this model is also the one that has the fewest accessories. Despite the practicality, this model is not recommended for sleeping children or for long periods away from home, because it is less comfortable. It is suitable for children from 6 months to 3 years. It is an excellent option to be the second pram for your baby, especially when he is older and the walks are more frequent.

Envelope style pram

The pram with envelope style closing is the one that is folded horizontally to close. Models like this are usually larger and have several accessories, so they take up a lot of space.

Twin pram

The pram for twins is very practical because it comes with 2 or 3 separate seats, which can be side by side or one behind the other (like a little train). This way, it is not necessary to have a pram for each baby. The twin pram is bigger and heavier than the other models and can have several configurations. The most interesting is that you can use this stroller to carry your children of different ages. If that is your case, opt for models with a wider seat.

Pram with movable seat

This model allows the rotation of the seat in 360 °, and the baby can face you or forward. It is worth paying attention to how your baby feels more comfortable. We compared the prams with umbrella and envelope closure style, so that you know the differences and similarities of each model:

Envelope pram Umbrella pram
How to close Horizontal folding model Vertical folding model
Size and features Larger, has many features and parts Smaller, is simple in features
Dimensions and weight when closed Larger and heavier Compact and light
Disadvantage Takes up a lot of space in the boot and inside the house It is less comfortable, so it is not recommended for the child to sleep
Price Because it is a more sophisticated model, it is more expensive It is the cheapest type of pram on sale

Purchase criteria: Factors to compare baby carriages

Although it may seem simple, the choice of a pram should be made with care and attention in order to buy a safe, comfortable model, the right size for your home and car, which meets your baby's needs and is suitable for your lifestyle. When choosing a pram, take into consideration the following criteria and features:

Although there are several items (we will explain one by one), they are quite simple and with a quick search on the internet or in a physical shop you can check these and other characteristics and choose the ideal model.

Dimensions

Before buying a pram you should research the dimensions of that model to check if you will be able to move around with it without difficulties inside and outside the house. To do this, measure the boot of your car, the pram should fit there when it is closed, but it is important that there is a little space left over so that you can store shopping bags or travel bags. Do this same measurement with the doors of your house, your building and even the lift. The chosen cart needs to pass through these doors with ease and be able to circulate in all areas of the house.

Types of closure

An important characteristic when choosing a pram model is the type of closure it has. A model can be less or more practical to handle and transport and what defines this is the closure of the equipment.

There are two types of closures: the umbrella style in which it remains vertical when closed and the envelope style in which the pram is folded in the middle.

With the umbrella closure system, the prams are more compact and take up little space inside the house and in the boot of the car. This model is ideal for those who have little space. Generally, models with the envelope closure style are larger and less compact, but they offer more accessories and are called pushchairs.

Levels of recline

The recline of the pram refers to the extent to which it is possible to change the position of the seat of the pram. There are models with up to 5 recline positions and others with multiple positions (usually the pushchair models). The most interesting of this resource is that you can change the recline of the pushchair according to the size and age of the child, from newborns to older children, up to 3 years old. It is only not recommended that you buy a model with total inclination, because the baby (mainly the newborn) should be slightly inclined to be able to regurgitate without suffocating.

Travel system

The Travel System, translated from English: travel system, is a very advantageous resource, because prams like this come with a cradle Moses and baby comfort which can be removed from the car with the baby inside and fitted in the pram without needing to wake him up. These two items are essential for the baby, mainly when he is a newborn and can only stay in the same position always, that is, lying down. According to the Brazilian Law, the baby comfort must be used until the child completes 1 year.

Weight of the pram and the baby

It's worth getting a lighter model of pram, as very heavy ones are harder to carry and push. Consider that sometimes you will only have one hand, because with the other you will be holding the baby.

Pram models weigh between 6 and 15 kg.

The weight of the baby is also a very important factor, because prams have a maximum weight supported that should never be exceeded, to prevent the pram from breaking and causing accidents. The ideal is to buy a pram that supports a higher weight than most models. You can also choose to change the pram as the baby grows, but this option is more expensive.

Safety items

Every pram has safety items to ensure that no accident happens to your child. The most common is the safety belt, it can have 3 or 5 points and can be padded or not. The 5-point belt is the most recommended type, as it helps to separate the legs and firm the shoulders and hips. This model prevents the child from slipping and falling, or worse, from being trapped by the neck. Another safety requirement are the brakes and locks on the rear wheels, but they may have different ways of activating them. The wheels should also be wide to give more stability. The semi-automatic closing prams, like the umbrella model or the foldable (envelope), need to have safety locks so that they do not close by themselves with the child inside.

Design

You can bet on prams with traditional design and neutral colours, without prints, if you intend to have other children in the future and need to reuse the piece. Besides the prams in conventional style, there are some very innovative models, with different and even futuristic designs. An example is the pram with 3 wheels.

Accessories

An accessory present on the pram which is very helpful on a daily basis is the cup holder on the support which can be used as a tray. This accessory makes it easier for you to place water bottles, baby food jars or the bottle to feed the baby during the stroll. Mattresses and mats suitable for prams are important because they ensure the baby's comfort during the ride. You can use a set of sheets, seat liner or disposable sheets to protect the seat from stains and dirt. To distract and calm the child, you can place a mobile on top of the pram. There are colorful options that play music and, besides keeping the child's attention, will develop the baby's hearing. It is also important that the mother or father carries everything that will be used during the trip, such as nappies, hygiene products, extra clothes and food. Some prams come with a bag to carry these items that matches the pram.

Extra Features

Pushchairs may have some extra features like a reversible seat, which turns the child's seat forward or backward (for whoever is pushing it). Some prams even give a "ride" to the sibling. Also check if the model you are thinking of buying comes with a bonnet, parasol and mackintosh, or if you can buy these accessories and attach them to the pram. It is also worth having a mosquito net specially developed for prams. (Source of the highlighted image: Antranias / Pixabay)
