The oil ensures that the surface is sealed by soaking into the top cell structure and thus repels water. This also makes it less likely for germs to multiply.
You can basically choose which oil you want to use to care for your bamboo chopping board. However, you do not usually need special wood care oils from the DIY store. Linseed oil is often recommended, as it best supports the antibacterial effect of your chopping board.
Olive oil may smell a little rancid after a while, especially at higher temperatures. If you like the smell of coconut, you can also use coconut oil to clean your chopping board.
How do I remove heavy soiling or rough grooves from my bamboo chopping board?
Over time, your bamboo chopping board may become stained by foods such as carrots, spinach, tomatoes or beetroot. Especially if the last sealing with oil was some time ago, the juices then easily penetrate the cells so that they can no longer be washed off.

If the dirt is too coarse or you have large cuts in your board that bother you, you can also sand your cutting board. Especially with thicker models, you can sand the top surface of the board without hesitation. Afterwards, your chopping board will be as good as new.
Why does my bamboo chopping board get mouldy or smelly?
First of all, you should know that bamboo, just like all other natural products, has its own smell. Especially when cutting, more acid escapes from the fibre of bamboo compared to wooden boards. Under certain circumstances, this is noticeable by a slightly sour smell. However, this is a good sign, as this acid is the reason for the antibacterial effect of bamboo.
However, if your bamboo chopping board has a strong smell, it is often not due to the bamboo. One possibility is that the oil you rubbed on the board has gone rancid. You can simply clean the board with soapy water or vinegar and baking powder or baking soda. Afterwards, however, you should definitely rub the board with oil again.
Your board may also smell because it is mouldy. To prevent mould, you should clean your chopping board after each use, dry it and leave it leaning on its edge for a while. This allows residual moisture to escape. Depending on how deep the mould is in the board, you can sand the surface of the board. Be careful with black mould, however, and we recommend replacing your board.
