What makes basil seeds so special?

But did you know that the seeds of the basil plant alone have a very positive effect on your body?

In Asia, people have been aware of this for many centuries, which is why basil seeds are a recognised remedy in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine.

Furthermore, basil seeds have many similarities with chia seeds. The latter have been known as a so-called superfood for a long time, but they have to be transported to us from South America, which is not the case with basil seeds.

Since basil seeds are native to our region and have a very similar effect to chia seeds, they could be preferred as a local product.

Basil seeds as a gel

If you add water to the basil seeds and let them soak in it, the result is a gel-like consistency. The seeds can thus be used as a thickener.

The taste is slightly nutty and you can use the gel to prepare puddings, shakes, desserts, salads, etc. It is especially popular in Asian cuisine. This is especially common in Asian cuisine.

Basil seeds have a blood-thinning effect, which can be a big risk for people who have to take blood-thinning medication anyway or are about to have an operation.

If this concerns you, always keep an eye on your blood values or better abstain from basil seeds.

Basil seeds also have the property that they can clump together, which can be dangerous for people who have difficulty swallowing. Therefore, caution is advised here as well. It is better not to use whole seeds or to use them in powdered form.

Another thing that is often claimed is that basil seeds can cause liver problems in young children. Therefore, you should adjust the dose or discuss it with your paediatrician. A low blood sugar level could also be a side effect.

Basil seeds are a local product and therefore a good alternative to chia seeds, as the effect of both products is very similar.

What alternatives are there to basil seeds?

Basil seeds are one of the latest trends and belong to the so-called superfoods. They are comparable to chia seeds and basically have almost the same effect.

Chia seeds

They also promote weight loss and stabilise the blood sugar level. They provide valuable vital substances, increase performance in sports and maintain the health of bones and muscles.

Like basil seeds, they absorb large amounts of water and contain a lot of iron, protein, magnesium, zinc and potassium. In the following, we will give you information about other superfoods such as the goji berry from China.

Other well-known superfood products

  • Goji berries come from China and have an anti-ageing effect. They support the immune system and lower blood pressure. You can also get them from Switzerland or alternatively use currants, blueberries or cranberries.
  • Quinoa comes from the Andes and is cooked in water. It can then be eaten hot or cold with other dishes. Quinoa contains a lot of protein, minerals and very little fat. It is also gluten-free.
  • Matcha powder is made from green tea leaves and contains a lot of iron, calcium, potassium and numerous vitamins. It is usually brewed as tea, but milk drinks with matcha are also very tasty. Conventional green tea is often cheaper and the effect is relatively the same.

If you want to buy basil seeds, there are five alternatives to choose from:

What are the characteristics of Genovese basil and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

You will probably already know Genovese basil, as it is the most common variety of basil. It has large, green, slightly curved leaves and is mainly used in the kitchen as a spice and for decorating dishes.

If you buy basil like this, it is best to plant it in a pot and place it in the kitchen. It is not so good in the garden, as the plant is very sensitive and could die more easily there.

The Genovese basil is hardly resistant to waterlogging and too much drought does not agree with it either. It is also unsuitable for overwintering.

It also needs a warm and sheltered spot in your kitchen to thrive. The basil should also not be exposed to draughts and make sure to water it regularly.

However, it should only be watered when the soil is really dry. It should never be too wet, otherwise it will rot from the inside and die.

When harvesting, always remove the entire shoot tips and not just the loose leaves. If you only tear off the leaves, it could also die.

It should be emphasised that the seeds of the Genovese basil are also suitable for consumption and have the healing effect that makes them so popular.

Pistou basil is very similar to Genovese basil, only its leaves are smaller and it has a denser leaf growth. Its Latin name is Ocimum basilicum var. Minimum.

It is also a popular kitchen herb and goes very well with cheese and bread dishes or with tomato salads. You may also know the sauce pistou, which is made from garlic, basil, olive oil, pine nuts and pesto.

What distinguishes lemon basil and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Lemon basil is a particularly refreshing type of basil. Its origin is in Tanzania, Africa and its Latin name is Ocimum Americanum.

Externally, lemon basil is a much more robust and also hairy plant with smaller leaves compared to conventional basil.

While other basil varieties have a peppery to tart flavour, lemon basil is characterised by a fruity lime flavour. Because of this, it goes perfectly with sweet dishes such as ice cream, desserts, fruit and fruit salads, but also with fish dishes and much more.

This variety also has analgesic and cleansing properties. Dried lemon basil is often used in Africa as a fumigant against mosquitoes.

If you get this variety, you should find a sunny, sheltered and warm place for it. This plant also needs a minimum temperature of 10-15 degrees, preferably more. Again, make sure you water it properly and avoid waterlogging.

In July it usually produces bright purple flowers, which you should remove to preserve the fruity aroma. Lemon basil is also not hardy and is only an annual plant. However, you can freeze or dry it to preserve it.

What distinguishes Thai basil and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Thai basil is an umbrella term for three other basil varieties that are used in Thai cuisine. These are:

  • Bai Horapa
  • Bai Maenglak
  • Bai Krapao

However, the typical "Thai basil" is the Bai Horapa, which has a very special flavour. Its aroma is reminiscent of aniseed and liquorice. It is mainly used to refine sauces and soups.

To do this, it is cooked briefly so that the aromas can develop better. Of course, Thai basil can also be used for salads and other raw vegetable dishes.

Thai basil has been known for more than 3000 years and is thought to have originated in India or West Asia. Its growth is vigorous and bushy, which is why it is also well suited for your garden. It reaches a height of up to 80 cm and is also a perennial.

Although the Thai basil is less sensitive than its congeners, it also has a rather short life span.

Again, make sure to choose a sunny spot that is protected from wind and direct rain. The easiest way to grow Thai basil is to plant it in a large pot and place it on the balcony or terrace.

You should not plant it before mid-May and make sure the temperature is at least 10-15 degrees. The soil must be frost-free, as the plant is very sensitive to frost. You can also fertilise it and should even prune it to encourage leaf growth.

When harvesting - as always - do not just tear off the leaves alone, but remove them with the stem so that new shoots can form. You can also preserve it by freezing or drying it.

Thai basil soothes upset stomachs and also serves to stimulate the appetite. If you are on a diet, Thai basil can even replace salt as a spice.

If you want to benefit from your Thai basil for a longer period of time, you need to bring it indoors to a warm, light place in winter. All basil varieties are not hardy, as it is too cold in our latitudes.

However, if it is in a good spot where it gets enough sun and temperatures of 15-20 degrees, it is quite possible to overwinter a basil plant.

Variety of basil

If you are buying basil seeds that are also intended for consumption, you must choose those of the common basil. This is the Genovese basil (Ocimum basilicum).

As you already know, there are several varieties of basil, but their seeds are not used for eating, only for sowing. It should also be stated on the packaging whether the seeds are edible.

Sometimes you will find labels like "Use like chia seeds". You should be able to find them in health food shops and organic food shops.

However, the other varieties are also highly recommended for seasoning dishes, and they can also have beneficial properties.


If you decide on a basil variety, you should clarify the following questions in advance:

  • What kind of dishes do I want to season with it?
  • Where do I want the basil plant?
  • Should it be suitable for overwintering?
  • Should it be an annual or a perennial?
  • Do I want to use the seeds for sowing or for eating?

Not all basil is the same. Each variety is sensitive to different degrees and requires more or less care. The flavour also varies depending on the variety.

If you absolutely want to plant basil in the garden, you should also be aware that not every variety is suitable for this.


If you want to use local products, you should pay attention to the origin of the basil seeds. Many are still imported from India or other Asian countries and are therefore very cheap.

Unfortunately, you never know under what conditions the seeds were produced. Basil seeds can be produced in Germany without any problems and do not have to be transported halfway around the world.

It may be that German basil seeds are a little more expensive, but they do not have long transport routes behind them, cause less CO2 emissions and are produced according to stricter guidelines.

Facts worth knowing about basil seeds

How can I incorporate basil seeds into my diet?

If you have already had a lot to do with chia seeds and also already know some recipes, you can also use basil seeds as a substitute for chia seeds and conjure up delicious dishes.

It is important to soak the basil seeds in water for half an hour before eating them. They swell up strongly and increase in size. You can then add them to drinks such as shakes, smoothies, yoghurt drinks or various dishes.

They are also ideal for muesli, fruit salads and vegan dishes. The basil seeds have a gel-like consistency, which is ideal for thickening sauces, cream soups or puddings.

If you don't want to soak them to enjoy the pithy flavour, you could also sprinkle them as a topping on your salad. In any case, make sure you drink enough water with it. For every tablespoon of basil seeds, drink 250 ml of water.

How are basil seeds dosed and taken?

The most important thing when taking basil seeds is that you take them with enough water. The seeds absorb a lot of water and can reach up to thirty times their size.

So if you take them with too little water, they can cause dehydration or constipation because they clump together.

It is best to soak the basil seeds in water for 30 minutes before using or taking them. You should drink at least 250 ml of water per tablespoon of basil seeds.

Start with small amounts in the beginning to get your body used to the supplementation with basil seeds!

We recommend 1-3 tablespoons of basil seeds per day in combination with a quarter litre of water or incorporated into meals. At best, always eat them in soaked form to keep side effects to a minimum.
