The Best Bathroom Radio: Our Choice
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a bathroom radio
Why exactly do I need a bathroom radio? Can't I put any portable radio in the bathroom?
That's why there are specially designed radios that you can put in the bathroom or even take into the shower, depending on the type.
What features should my bathroom radio have?
- Clock display
- USB connection
- AUX connection
- Motion detector
- iPhone-iPod docking station
- Remote control
- CD player
Depending on the type, the variety of equipment can vary, but the normal bathroom radio has the greatest variety of integrated equipment. The flush-mounted radio comes in second place; here, special equipment is usually not integrated, but the radio can be expanded with it. In last place is the shower radio.
Since this device is waterproof, this limits the variety of features, so these devices usually contain only one or two items from the list. Of course, you have to decide for yourself which features are more important to you. However, please note that more features also increase the price.
What does a bathroom radio cost?
|Shower radio||Available from approx. 10 €|
|Bathroom radio||Available from approx. 30 €|
|Flush-mounted radio||Available from approx. 65 €|
The flush-mounted radio is definitely the most expensive type. This is due to the numerous equipment options and extensions. Shower radios start at 10 euros and upwards, but should be critically evaluated in this price range, because the sound quality is often cut. The average bathroom radio is in the middle price range.
Keep in mind, however, that depending on the quality, a very good bathroom radio can be more expensive than a low-priced in-wall radio.
Where can I buy a radio for the bathroom?
How does the installation of a flush-mounted radio work?
If you are unsure, we recommend that you ask a specialist for advice. That way, you won't accidentally change something on the socket and it might no longer be connected.
- Go to the fuse box and flip the bathroom switch or the main switch. This step is absolutely essential. Even electricians won't work on the home's power grid before doing this.
- You remove the screw that is in the middle of the socket and then take off the cover. You should then see a metal ring, which you also remove and disconnect from the power cables.
- Now you should read the instructions for use of your product, as you now have to insert the flush-mounted radio and this can differ slightly from device to device.
- After you have connected the device, put the cover back on and your socket radio is ready. Your device may also offer the option of connecting it to the light switch or to a motion detector. But this process varies from product to product.
Decision: What types of bathroom radios are there and which is the right one for you?
Basically, you can distinguish between three different types of bathroom radios:
- Classic bathroom radio
- Flush-mounted radio
- Shower radio
Each of these types has different features, which each bring individual advantages and disadvantages. Depending on which features you value most, a different type of bathroom radio is best suited for you. In the following section, we would like to help you find out which device is best suited for you.
What distinguishes the classic bathroom radio and what advantages and disadvantages does it have?
The special advantages of the "normal" bathroom radio are the different designs. Visually, such a device is very attractive. If you have enough space to have it always visible, you should attach importance to the design.
This type of radio is suitable for use in damp rooms. This is the main difference to normal radios. You can take them into the bathroom, but they can be damaged if they are repeatedly exposed to water vapours for a long time. Therefore, be careful with products that are advertised as "bathroom radios" and check whether they can really cope well with humid environments.
Can't miss your favourite CD while bathing? Then you should take a closer look at the classic bathroom radios, because many have an integrated CD player. These radios are in the middle class, both in terms of price and sound quality. In contrast to radios that are not suitable for use in damp rooms, you can easily take your bathroom radio into other rooms - provided it runs on batteries or rechargeable batteries.
But beware: this type of radio can withstand bathroom fumes well, but of course it must not come into contact with a large amount of water, like any other electronic device.
What distinguishes a flush-mounted radio and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
The special advantage of a flush-mounted radio is that it takes up very little space. This gives you the opportunity to enjoy music with good sound with minimal space consumption. The flush-mounted radio is usually attached to a flush-mounted socket. This is the part of the socket that is built into the wall.
At first glance, this sounds complicated, but it can be done in a few minutes with little craftsmanship and a screwdriver. With most devices, operation is via a touch display or remote control. Built-in radios offer you the option of installing a simple network to the light switch or to a motion detector. This way, you can have the lights and music turn on automatically when you enter your bathroom. You can do without cables altogether. The only visible components of a plug-in radio are the control panel and the speakers. This type also impresses with its sound quality.
Flush-mounted radios offer the option of being connected to external speakers that you can mount on the ceiling, for example. This can increase the sound quality considerably and is a clear advantage over other bathroom radios. Depending on the model, the in-wall radio can have a docking station, connection options for external devices or an alarm function. Because of the many options, this type of radio is also the most expensive.
Prices start at around 60 to 70 euros. However, if you want to use all the features, you are very well served for the money. It is also important to note that with a flush-mounted radio, you can only listen to music in the respective room. You can't take it with you, you would need speakers in other rooms that you connect to the radio. These are already advanced "gimmicks".
What are the special features of a shower radio and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The special advantage of a shower radio is that it is splash-proof. This gives you the possibility to take your music enjoyment with you under or at least close to the shower. The shower radio is usually a small bathroom radio and should be at least splash-proof, if possible even waterproof.
They come in a wide variety of forms and the features can also differ from product to product. Most shower radios are suspended or equipped with a suction cup and are suitable for installation in the bathroom or under the shower at head height.
The battery operation means that the shower radio can also be used outside the bathroom. The shower radio's compact size makes it ideal to take with you, so you don't have to miss out on music when travelling or on holiday, and you can check out what other stations are available there. Shower radios come in many different shapes and colours. Especially models in squeaky duck design or in the shape of other animals are ideal for children and can make the "bath ritual" easier for parents.
One disadvantage compared to the other types is usually the sound quality. However, since there is usually background noise in the bathroom, you may not perceive sound differences as clearly here. This will also not be such a big criterion for children. Don't forget that a shower radio - of course - only runs on batteries or rechargeable batteries.
A cable would be out of place here, so mains operation is not possible and you should always pay attention to the charging indicator and have batteries handy.
Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate radio sets for the bathroom
In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate bathroom radios. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular radio is suitable for you or not. In summary, these are:
- Size of the bathroom radio
- Reception type
- Water protection
- Convenient extra functions
- Power supply
In the following paragraphs you can read about the individual purchase criteria and how you can classify them.
Size of the bathroom radio
The most space-saving is a flush-mounted radio or shower radio that you can mount on or in the wall. The usual bathroom radios take up much more space because you have to put them down. On the other hand, they are usually a real eye-catcher. Flush-mounted radios require an area about the size of a socket with a light switch.
Shower radios are relatively handy with a size of around 3.5 x 5 x 13 cm to 14.5 x 8 x 24 cm. The "normal" bathroom radio is the largest type, measuring up to around 25 x 17.5 x 16 cm. A large bathroom radio usually goes hand in hand with a nicer sound than a smaller unit.
Depending on the model, the water protection differs. There are basic differences between the three types of radios, so a different type is suitable depending on the place of use. For the "normal" bathroom radio, it is sufficient if it is suitable for use in damp rooms, as these devices should not be exposed to direct water contact anyway.
Usually, the classic radio is placed on a shelf or, if there is a lack of space, on the floor. Flush-mounted radios do not have any water protection, but usually do not need it because they are not exposed to water and are located on a socket holder at a distance from the bathtub. The shower radio is the type that has the greatest water protection.
It is at least splash-proof, and some models are even waterproof. This makes them ideal for use near the bathtub or in the shower cubicle.
Since ambient noise is generated in a bathroom by showering or other activities, the volume plays a decisive role. On average, a shower radio has the lowest volume because it is a small, handy device, but this is well compensated for by its close proximity.
The classic bathroom radio is louder than the shower radio, but it cannot be in the immediate vicinity of the water. This means that a higher volume is necessary, and the background noise can also predominate. The loudest are the flush-mounted radios, as they also offer additional speakers that can be placed on the ceiling and provide a loud stereo sound with a good tone.
If you attach importance to music enjoyment with your bathroom radio, you should pay particular attention to the sound quality of the end devices. However, bathroom radios will still not usually match the sound quality of your hi-fi music system in the living room. The shower radio is usually the type with the lowest sound quality; the same problem occurs here as with the volume.
The manufacturers are limited in terms of volume and sound quality due to the small size of the device and the speakers. The classic bathroom radio can vary from low to medium sound quality and is thus in the middle of the three types. Of course, the quality of the terminal ultimately plays the decisive role, so a high-quality shower radio can be superior to an inferior bathroom radio in terms of sound quality.
Design plays an important role, especially in the case of bathroom radios that you won't stow away in a cupboard after every use. The design is primarily divided into two elements:
The usual colour for bathroom radios is white, but if you prefer a different shade, you can also get certain bathroom radios in black,silver or yellow . As far as the shape of the bathroom radio is concerned, you basically have the choice between modern design, animal shape (more for children) or models with a retro look.
If you choose a flush-mounted radio, the above shapes do not apply. The flush-mounted radio consists of an elegant socket cover that serves as a control surface. Boxes can be purchased to match the colour and appearance of the control surface.
Convenient extra functions
Each of the three types of radio offers you different extra functions that you should consider when making a purchase. Especially the in-wall radios in the higher price segment stand out with some features such as USB connection, docking stations for iPhone or iPod or a Bluetooth function that allows you to connect external devices to the radio.
Connecting a flush-mounted radio to a light switch or a motion detector can provide further convenience. Shower radios also offer advantages such as suction cups, cords and brackets for mounting in the shower cubicle. Some classic bathroom radios can score with the extra function of a CD player.
Each of the three types offers you different power supply options that can significantly influence your purchase decision. Flush-mounted radios always require a power socket, as these types of radios are attached to the socket holder with a connection to the mains.
This has the advantage of not having to buy annoying batteries or charge the battery before operation. Shower radios usually never have a mains connection as this could be dangerous if they come into direct contact with water. They run on either battery or rechargeable battery power. The advantage of this, of course, is flexibility.
You can install a shower radio at exactly the height where the volume is optimal for you. The classic bathroom radios offer the most power supply alternatives. They are available with battery / rechargeable battery operation as well as with a mains connection. If your bathroom is large enough, you should have no problem with an additional cable.
Facts worth knowing about bathroom radios
Are waterproof bathroom radios really waterproof?
Waterproof does not necessarily mean waterproof. Devices that are not suitable for all environmental conditions are subdivided into protection types and protection classes. For us, only the protection class of the product is relevant, as this indicates the water protection. The protection class is classified as IP XXXX (International Protection Code) and refers to its respective protection class and its characteristics by means of four code numbers.
A further distinction is made between the words "waterproof" and "watertight". Waterproof products are those that are not affected by splashing water, but are immediately broken if they slip into the bathtub. Waterproof products must be able to withstand such "accidents" at least for a short time without being damaged. No liquid may penetrate the housing.
Waterproof does not mean watertight. Before buying, find out exactly what protection the bathroom radio offers against water.
Depending on the position of the number in the "XXXX", this indicates different degrees of protection:
|1st digit||Protection against contact / foreign bodies|
|2nd digit||Water protection|
|3rd digit||Additional protection against contact|
|4th digit||Supplementary letters|
If the 1st or 2nd digit are not relevant for the marking, they are replaced by an X. The digit relevant for water protection is the second. Here you can see the possible code numbers for this:
|Code numbers for water protection||Description|
|IP X0||Not protected against water penetration|
|IP X1||Protected against vertically falling dripping water|
|IP X2||Protected against diagonally falling dripping water (15° from the vertical)|
|IP X3||Protected against spray water (up to 60° from vertical)|
|IP X4||Protected from water spray|
|IP X5||Protected from water jets (from all directions)|
|IP X6||Protected from water ingress during temporary flooding|
|IP X7||Protected against water penetration during immersion|
|IP X8||Protected against water penetration during immersion for an indefinite period|
|IP X9 K||Protected against water penetration from any direction even with greatly increased pressure against the enclosure. (high-pressure/steam cleaner, 80-100 bar)|
Many terminals claim to be waterproof or splash-proof but do not have an IP code. Therefore, check carefully whether these devices live up to their promise.
