Whether in the living room, car or staircase, you must always vacuum regularly to keep your surroundings clean and tidy. A good household helper is the cordless hoover. It makes vacuuming easier and more convenient, no matter where you are. Depending on the area of use, you can choose between a handheld or a floor hoover. It's not just the design that should convince you, but above all the battery life, suction power, additional features and application options.

In our big Battery Vacuum Cleaner test 2022 you can find out a lot about cordless hoovers and make the best decision for you. Especially in a house with many stairs, with several cars or in a household with children, cordless hoovers are a great way to clean. This makes vacuuming fun again.

  • Cordless hoovers make vacuuming easier. Because they are cordless and powered by a rechargeable battery, it is possible to clean your home anywhere without barriers.
  • A basic distinction is made between cordless hand vacuums and cordless floor vacuums. Both types are available in numerous variants and different designs.
  • Cordless handheld vacuum cleaners are well suited for small and quick clean-ups on tables or other furniture. Cordless floor vacuums, on the other hand, have a longer reach and can therefore be used almost anywhere.

The Best Battery Vacuum Cleaner: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a Battery Vacuum Cleaner

If you want to buy a cordless hoover, there are a few things you should consider before you buy. The following guide will help you find the perfect cordless hoover for you.

What is a Battery Vacuum Cleaner and what do you need it for?

Anyone who has ever used a conventional hoover with a cord will immediately know how to use a cordless hoover.

The only difference between conventional hoovers and cordless hoovers is the source of the power supply.

Whereas hoover motors draw their power from the socket by means of a connecting cable, cordless hoovers draw their power from the battery. This, in turn, must be regularly recharged by means of a connecting cable and socket.

Apart from carpets, modern hoovers are designed to remove dust and other dirt from all floor coverings. In the meantime, hoovers have outstripped the classic brooms in pretty much all households, as they simply achieve better cleaning results.

While the vast majority of cordless hoovers are so-called stick ho overs, there are also versions with flexible suction hoses that are reminiscent of a classic hoover.

How do Battery Vacuum Cleaner work?

In terms of function, there are no significant differences between a cordless hoover and a conventional hoover.

The principle is the same:

  1. A motor inside the body of the device creates a vacuum through its fan, which ensures that an air flow is generated.
  2. This air flow is bundled by a suction tube, which creates a suction effect that sucks the dirt into the inside of the body, where it lands in a collection container.
  3. The dirty air is then cleaned by a filter and expelled back into the environment by the hoover.

In summary, there are only three things you need for a functioning hoover: Motor, collection system and a filter.

Vacuum cleaners with cyclone technology are allergy-friendly.

When it comes to the collection system, a distinction is made between bag and bagless hoovers. The latter include hoovers that are equipped with single or multiple cyclone technology. Here, the polluted air is filtered before it is released back into the environment.

This is particularly beneficial for people who suffer from fine dust allergies, as virtually no dust particles are released back into the air via the exhaust air of the hoover.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of battery vacuum cleaners?

Cordless hoovers are used without a cord and impress with their compact size. Most are bagless and therefore allergy-friendly.

A particular advantage is that all types of cordless vacuum cleaners:

  • are ready for use at any time.
  • are light and compact to handle due to their small size.
  • do not require a power socket.
  • offer more opportunities for vacuuming due to their mobility.

Especially if pets live in your flat or house, these devices have a big advantage. They are quickly at hand and can be put away just as quickly.

A cordless vacuum cleaner is also practical for cleaning the inside of a car, as you don't need a power socket and there are no cables to get in the way.

What's more, cleaning cordless hoovers is child's play. In many devices, the dirt is collected in a plastic container that you simply have to empty. This saves money on buying filter bags, which you need for the normal floor hoover.

  • Ready to use anytime and anywhere without a power socket
  • High mobility
  • Easy emptying (bagless)
  • Compact size
  • Short battery life
  • Heavier to handle
  • Less suction power than a floor hoover

Probably the biggest disadvantage of a cordless hoover - although it is also an advantage - is its battery. When the battery is empty, it has to be recharged and this can sometimes take a few hours.

With a short battery life and large flats or houses with many rooms, there is a risk that the battery will run out before you have finished vacuuming.

As a rule, the average running time of cordless hoovers is 20 to 45 minutes.

It is therefore best to choose hoovers that are equipped with a lithium-ion technology battery. These batteries do not discharge themselves even after a long period of non-use. This avoids having to recharge the battery hoover before using it.

Another disadvantage of cordless hoovers is that they are usually heavier to handle than ordinary hoovers because all the technology is in the handpiece. This is noticeable in the weight of the hoover.

Some battery models have a weaker suction power than conventional hoovers. Especially on carpets and rugs, a cordless hoover can sometimes stumble. However, there are now also some very powerful cordless models on the market.

Which well-known manufacturers of Battery Vacuum Cleaner are there?

The English company Dyson is a real big player in the hoover industry. Especially in the field of bagless vacuum technology, they have done pioneering work and thus broken new ground.

But this manufacturer of cordless hoovers does not only inspire through innovation, but also through its excellent suction power, the good handling and its generally high quality in terms of workmanship.

It is therefore hardly surprising that models from this manufacturer are regularly found at the top of test portals' bestseller lists. The brand's customers are also consistently satisfied with the products of this manufacturer.

The only downside of Dyson models is the cost. Models from this manufacturer are usually a little more expensive than products from other manufacturers.

Siemens enjoys a very good reputation in German-speaking countries due to its 170-year history. For this reason, the company has been able to establish itself as one of the world's leading hoover manufacturers.

Cordless hoovers from Siemens are characterised by their high durability and very good quality. In addition, appliances from this company usually have a particularly effective cleaning performance as well as extensive features.

Severin is a brand that produces rather inexpensive cordless hoovers. This brand also has 60 years of experience in manufacturing household appliances.

The company primarily targets a price-conscious clientele, but without neglecting the quality factor. The majority of testers praise the good price-performance ratio of this manufacturer.

Other well-known manufacturers of battery vacuum cleaners

Besides the three manufacturers mentioned above, there are many other producers of cordless hoovers. These include, among others:

  • AEG
  • Black&Decker
  • Bosch
  • Leifheit
  • Miele
  • Philips
  • Hoover

How much does a battery vacuum cleaner cost?

In the case of cordless vacuum cleaners, inexpensive models start at around 80 euros. Expensive models cost more than 500 euros. The price depends on the brand and model, quality, performance and accessories.

Prices for cordless vacuum cleaners start at about 20 euros, but some cost more than 100 euros.

What alternatives are there to battery vacuum cleaners?

A good alternative to the cordless hoover is the conventional hoover. The main advantage of this vacuum cleaner is its good suction power.

Depending on the area of use, you can use a floor hoover, a small hand hoover or a special carpet cleaner.

If you need a powerful hoover that can not only vacuum dry but also wet, we recommend a wet-dry hoover or an industrial hoover. These products are particularly powerful.

Another alternative is to use a vacuum robot. This is also battery-operated and cleans the floor of your home all by itself.

Decision: What types of Battery Vacuum Cleaner are there and which is the right one for you?

Simply put, a cordless hoover is a hoover without a cord and without a bag. This hoover does not need a free power socket for its use, nor do you have to drag a cable behind you. Since it also does not have a bag, this saves follow-up costs.

There are basically three types of conventional cordless vacuum cleaners:

  • Cordless handheld hoover
  • Cordless hand hoover
  • 2-in-1 version with integrated hand vacuum cleaner

What distinguishes a Battery Vacuum Cleaner and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

These cordless hoovers are also called stick hoovers because of their design. This is a housing (which houses the motor, fan, filter and bag or collection bin) to which the handle of the hoover is attached.

  • Convenient to use
  • Bagless and cordless
  • Cleans hard-to-reach places
  • More unwieldy than a cordless vacuum cleaner without a handle

The handle is the advantage over a cordless vacuum cleaner - it allows you to reach hard-to-reach places, such as under the sofa, or to vacuum cobwebs from the ceiling.

However, the handle can also be impractical, as it can get in the way in some corners of the home.

What are the features of a battery (hand) vacuum cleaner and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

There are cordless hoovers as well as cordless hand hoovers for pet hair or allergy sufferers, with various accessories, with wet-dry vacuum function and much more.

Cordless vacuum cleaner for pet hair

Dogs and cats are undoubtedly popular pets, but they leave pet hair everywhere. You need a hoover that removes the hair quickly and effectively.

If you don't always want to get the big floor hoover out of the closet, you can also get rid of pet hair with a cordless hoover. Such a hand-held vacuum cleaner also has the advantage that it can be used in the car to remove pet hair from the upholstery.

If you have a pet, you usually have to deal with hair from your fluffy four-legged friend. A hand hoover can help you on favourite sleeping places like the sofa or the windowsill. (Image source: / Krysten Merriman)

Since there are no special cordless hoovers just for pet hair, you should pay special attention to the power, suitability for upholstery or smooth surfaces and the size of the dirt container when choosing a cordless hoover.

A model with at least 18 volts is recommended because pet hair often gets caught in the upholstery. This requires a lot of suction power. Special attachments with a fleece that loosens the hair also help here.

  • Handy
  • Bagless and cordless
  • For quick and targeted cleaning
  • Inexpensive
  • Not as powerful as a normal hoover

Before deciding to buy a vacuum cleaner, you should ask yourself how much hair you need to vacuum. After all, a small handheld hoover does not have the same suction power as a normal cordless hoover and is more suitable for little hair on the furniture.

Cordless hoover for allergy sufferers

Allergy sufferers know how hard it is to keep their living spaces as clean as possible. Brooms stir up dust too much and even standard household hoovers release some of the fine dust back into the environment.

For allergy sufferers, a bagless hoover is always a good alternative. Cordless and handheld vacuum cleaners are also suitable for this purpose, as they do not have a bag and you can simply empty and wash out the container. Furthermore, this design is environmentally friendly and economical.

These cordless hand vacuums come with various attachments and accessories for many different applications. Consequently, they are a good secondary device, but you still can't get around a 'big' hoover.

  • Use on different furniture
  • Bagless and cordless
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Economical
  • No long operating times
  • Only useful as second devices

With their low energy consumption, the hand-held units are a good alternative to the large floor hoover, especially for upholstered furniture and use on smaller surfaces. Allergy sufferers thus have the opportunity to quickly and reliably remove dust, pet hair and mites from hard-to-reach places.

What distinguishes a 2-in-1 battery vacuum cleaner with integrated hand vacuum and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

A cordless hoover with integrated hand vacuum works like a normal cordless vacuum cleaner, but it has a removable hand vacuum. This is usually located on the front and can be removed at the touch of a button.

It also works the other way round: a hand hoover with a handle and brush attachment to make it easier to vacuum the floor.

In these two types of appliance, the vacuumed dust is trapped in the hand vacuum and this can be easily detached. There is no need for a bag, which is both environmentally friendly and economical.

  • Easy to use
  • Uncomplicated emptying
  • Targeted cleaning of tight corners possible
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Economical
  • Good models are relatively expensive
  • Low running time at highest level

If you place a lot of value on flexibility and are also looking for a space-saving alternative for two household appliances, the purchase of a 2-in-1 hoover would be recommended.

When buying, make sure to take a vacuum cleaner with a battery of 16 volts or more, as this ensures a longer operating time. Charging times range from three to six hours.

In summary: If a 2-in-1 device is preferred, a cordless vacuum cleaner with integrated hand vacuum is the best solution. The bagless vacuum cleaner is environmentally friendly and economical, always at hand and easy handling ensures it can vacuum even the most stubborn dirt out of the corners.

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate Battery Vacuum Cleaner

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate cordless hoovers. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular cordless vacuum cleaner is suitable for you or not.

In summary, these are:

  • Filter system & bag features
  • Weight & dimensions
  • Suction power
  • Battery and voltage
  • Accessories & extras
  • Warranty

Filter system & bag characteristics

In cordless vacuum cleaners, there are mainly cyclone filters or simple dust containers.

In cordless vacuum cleaners with a cyclone filter , the dust-laden air is circulated in tighter circles in a container at high speed. In the process, the dirt particles move to the wall of the container due to centrifugal force.

The pre-cleaned air is then led outside through a fine dust filter. Cleaning the filter is very easy: The filter is removed and rinsed under running water. It should be completely dry before you put it back in.

In the case of units with normal dust containers, the air together with the dirt enters the container without being pre-cleaned. Some models have a button that simply opens the dust box, allowing the contents to fall directly into the bin. However, some models can be more cumbersome to clean.

Bag or no bag is also a question to consider. If you choose a model with a bag, they have to be replaced when they are full, which is costly.

If you opt for a bagless cordless hoover, the container that collects the dust must be emptied and cleaned regularly.

Weight & dimensions

Many cordless vacuum cleaners weigh between 3 and 7 kilograms. However, a cordless hoover should not weigh much more than 7 kilograms, otherwise it becomes heavy and unwieldy to use.

With a lighter weight, the vacuums are easy to transport and easier to use for hard-to-reach places - such as the top edge of a door.

You only need to pay attention to the dimensions if the hoover is intended for a specific storage place or if it is also to vacuum smaller things that cannot be reached with a normal hoover. In this case, a relatively large cordless vacuum cleaner is out of the question.

Some models can be made smaller or larger by using different attachments.

Suction power

The power of the motor and thus the suction power of the appliance is given in watts. If you think that a high wattage corresponds to good suction power, you are mistaken. In fact, a high wattage leads to a high electricity bill, as the results of Stiftung Warentest have shown.

The wattage always refers to the motor of the hoover and provides information about the power consumption. This means that the wattage has nothing to do with the actual power of the hoover motor.

A battery hoover with 600 watts can have the same power as a hoover connected to the wall socket.

What is much more crucial for good suction power is the overall design of the appliance. In addition, hoovers with a higher wattage are usually louder than those with a lower wattage.

Battery and voltage

The two different battery types (NiMH and LI) and voltages contribute to the charging time and performance of the hoover.

Nickel-metal hybrid battery Lithium-ion battery
The nickel-metal hydride battery is more environmentally friendly and more powerful than the two batteries mentioned above. A NiMH battery can last three to five years (or handle up to 1000 charges). If you do not want to use your cordless vacuum cleaner for a longer period of time, the battery should be removed before storage The lithium-ion battery is thermally stable and hardly loses any capacity even if it is frequently partially discharged. The Li-Ion battery should not be stored too warm, otherwise there is a risk of capacity loss (room temperature is ok).

Units with a voltage of at least 18 volts have sufficient suction power. For heavy soiling and carpets, a vacuum cleaner with at least 21 volts or better 25 volts should be considered. For compact handheld vacuums, 10 volts may also be sufficient, depending on the area of use.

Maximum operating time

For a clean floor, a running time of at least 15 minutes is best for cordless floor vacuums. This ensures that at least a few rooms can be cleaned.

With handheld vacuums, the operating time is not so essential, as they are only used for short, targeted cleanings. But with a running time of five minutes, it is certain that at least the coarsest dirt can be vacuumed up.

Battery performance

On average, a cordless hoover works for 20 minutes, although you can vacuum for longer with some models. The lithium-ion technology in the battery ensures that the battery does not discharge further when not in use, so it does not have to be plugged in all the time.

Furthermore, the battery should not have a so-called "memory effect". This occurs when batteries are connected to the power supply before they are completely empty. In the worst case, the battery remembers this energy requirement over time and only provides the amount of energy previously required.

Charging time

The charging time is around 4-6 hours.

The charging time for hoovers with battery operation is between four and six hours for most models. But there are also models that need 12 hours to charge. When buying a vacuum cleaner, it is important to consider how often it will be used.

You have to reckon with particularly long charging times for handheld vacuums. Some devices need more than 16 hours for a full charge! This is especially the case when nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are used. Models with lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries are better. These types of batteries are explained in a later subsection.

Did you know that there is a replacement battery for many cordless hoovers?

If your battery loses power over time, you can easily order a replacement battery for many models without having to buy a new hoover.

Accessories and extras

Crevice nozzle

A crevice nozzle is a long, narrow attachment that is specially designed to clean crevices and narrow spaces that a hoover cannot reach with the normal combi-nozzle. Areas of application are, for example, sofa nooks, corners on skirting boards or the space behind heavy pieces of furniture.

In most cases it is a sensible purchase, even if in many households it is only used from time to time. With the crevice nozzle, you can reach areas that would otherwise only be cleaned to a limited extent, but still need to be cleaned from time to time.

This nozzle is usually included in the accessories supplied with more expensive appliances. With cheaper vacuum cleaners, you often have the option of purchasing the crevice nozzle separately.

Furniture brush

This very practical hoover accessory is especially useful for vacuuming furniture, delicate wood, shelves and computers or the interior of cars, but is also suitable for cleaning hard-to-reach corners and edges, such as skirting boards.

In principle, furniture brushes for hoovers are also practical for sensitive surfaces. Like the crevice nozzle, they can be included in the accessories or must be purchased separately.

Additional functions

Some cordless hoovers can vacuum both dry and wet. Other models have LED lights, which is handy in dark corners.

Some vacuums have a swivel head, which makes it easier to vacuum out of sight places.

Mopping function

Some cordless vacuums have a mopping function that can be used on hard floors. This makes it easy to remove stubborn dirt from parquet or tiles.

Detachable hand vacuum

2-in-1 cordless floor vacuums have an integrated and easily detachable hand vacuum. This can make vacuuming tight corners and individual pieces of furniture easier.

A cordless hoover with a detachable hand vacuum is suitable for vacuuming large areas while also reaching smaller surfaces, such as tables, armchairs, upholstery, etc.

Wall mounting

Wall mounting is a matter of practical storage of the vacuum cleaner. Some cordless floor vacuums have a charging station that is simply attached to the floor. Others offer wall mounting, which can be practical if you want the cordless vacuum cleaner to always be within reach.

With cordless handheld vacuums, there is almost always the option of attaching the device with charging station to the wall. If you don't want to place the vacuum cleaner so conspicuously on the wall, choose a model with a tabletop charging station. This way, the little helper can be stored in the pantry, for example.

Warranty and guarantee are regulated by law. In most cases, there is a two-year guarantee (in some cases even three years) from the date of purchase. For this reason, you should keep invoices and warranty cards for these periods.

Did you know that many devices come with a 30-day money-back guarantee?

If the cordless hoover does not meet your expectations, you can return it to the manufacturer.

If a defect occurs within the 2-year period, you should contact the manufacturer, who will then either repair or replace the appliance. However, not every manufacturer offers such a service for all defects. The manufacturer's guarantee is more of an accommodation.

Guarantees do not apply:

  • in the event of damage caused by natural hazards (weather conditions).
  • Damage or modification by the buyer/third parties (this includes own repair attempts or those by craftsmen not licensed by the manufacturer).
  • in the event of disregard of the maintenance instructions, misuse and non-standard household use.
  • or simply in the case of lack of care.

The damage must therefore be clearly attributable to the manufacturer in the first place if one wants to make a warranty claim.

Facts worth knowing about battery vacuum cleaners

How long have hoovers been around?

The idea for the invention of the hoover came about between 1860 and 1876 in the USA. Further developments took place in 1906. James Murray Spangler, an American caretaker, made a hoover out of a fan, a box and a pillow and patented his device in 1908.

In the process, he sold the idea to his cousin's company, the Hoover Harness and Leather Goods Factory. Today, Hoover is still one of the leading manufacturers of hoovers.

In 1912, Axel Wenner-Gren developed the Lux I model of the Electrolux brand, a hoover for the German market. The Electrolux umbrella brand includes other well-known brands of household appliances such as AEG, Juno, Progress, Zanker and Zanussi.

Before the Second World War, hoovers were luxury goods. In the 1950s and 1960s, portable appliances spread and gradually became more practical.

In the 1980s, small battery-operated hand-held hoovers appeared on the market, but they were weak in suction and could not reach corners that were difficult to access with their rigid, slit-shaped suction opening.

What are the follow-up costs of a cordless hoover compared to other hoover variants?

Especially in the early days of cordless hoovers, the manufacturer Dyson coined its crisp slogan "No bag. No loss of suction power", a concept that made cordless hoovers particularly attractive.

By dispensing with hoover bags, customers save on follow-up and maintenance costs. In the meantime, the vast majority of cordless hoovers do without traditional dust bags.

But this is not the only way in which cordless hoovers offer potential savings. Thanks to cyclone technology, filters can also be dispensed with.

If the appliance cannot do without a filter, a distinction must be made between washable permanent filters and replaceable filters. This point is decisive in terms of follow-up costs.

If your appliance is equipped with an exchangeable filter, this can not only eat into your wallet, but also into the performance of your hoover, as a hoover with a full filter can only perform with difficulty. The cheaper, washable alternative is the permanent filter.

Are there cordless hoovers that vacuum wet and dry?

Yes, there are cordless hoovers that can vacuum wet and dry - these models not only remove dust but also liquids.

Cordless hoovers for wet and dry use usually have a special nozzle that can be changed to suck up water or other liquids. They are bagless and otherwise look like a normal hand vacuum cleaner.

Of course, the container for the liquid is much smaller than that of a floor hoover with a mop. In this respect, wet-dry vacuums are not suitable for larger areas.

How does the maintenance of a cordless hoover work?

Are there any vulnerable parts that tend to break on a cordless hoover?

The collection container is one of the most stressed parts of the cordless vacuum cleaner. Constant emptying as well as opening and closing can stress its closing mechanism. You should also regularly clean dust and dirt from the collection container.

When buying, it is worthwhile to look for high-quality workmanship and to be careful when removing and attaching the container.

Thesuction slot and nozzle of the cordless vacuum cleaner should be kept as free of dirt as possible to ensure that they do not become clogged. This can not only lead to a loss of suction power, but in the worst case even to overheating of the motor and battery.

Is it worth repairing a cordless hoover? Where can I have it repaired?

Yes, in principle you can have a cordless hoover repaired if it is broken. However, if you have had your hoover for a few years, you may not be able to buy suitable spare parts.

The price of spare parts should not be underestimated. Especially if it is an older model, the prices can be quite high.

In many cases, it is therefore worth replacing an old appliance rather than repairing it at great expense.
