Alkaline or lithium batteries - what should you look out for?

Alkaline. They work thanks to the chemical reaction between two components: manganese dioxide and zinc. They are rectangular or cylindrical and have a higher energy density. The non-rechargeable 9-volt AA and AAA batteries are in this category. They must be disposed of in a container so as not to pollute.

Lithium. They offer the possibility of regenerating the charge countless times, which is why they are a high consumption battery in the telephone and accessory industry. Some models individually combine cobalt oxide, manganese oxide and iron phosphate. They have a lightweight design, as they are made of the lightest metal: lithium.

Basically, batteries come in two easy-to-choose formats. However, this aspect often confuses some buyers, as some variables vary from application to application. To give you a deeper understanding, we'll explain what we mean below.

Rechargeable. We recommend purchasing rechargeable lithium batteries, along with the charger that will be used to renew the charge, if you are looking for products that you can use as many times as you need. For example, they are excellent complements for digital cameras, remote controls and torches.

Pre-charged. Choose good quality alkaline batteries if you will only use them once or until they run out of power. It is important that you use them correctly, and avoid trying to recharge them so that they do not overheat. They lose little charge during periods of inactivity, which is why they are sold at a higher price.

Category

The American National Standards Institute created the nomenclature that categorises batteries in 1974. The idea was to classify rechargeable devices compatible with certain equipment. To know which batteries are right for you, it is important to consider this classification.

AA. Take home a pack of AA-denominated batteries and put them in devices such as stopwatches, watches, toys, and cameras. Check whether they are rechargeable or non-rechargeable, as the former provide up to 1.2 volts (V), while the other presentation amounts to 1.5 V.

AAA. They are designed for medium-sized devices. For example, they will be useful in remote control mechanisms such as remote controls for televisions and drones. Carry this portable power system in its disposable version for other electronic devices that require them.

AAAA. It is advisable to select AAAA batteries to power small items. These include torches, tiny headphones, glucose meters and even laser pointers during academic presentations. Before choosing them, consider which format works best for your product.

Design

This aspect has a decisive influence on the purchase. Of course, in addition to other factors, this power system must be compatible with the space provided for its use. For example, a cylindrical battery will not work in a rectangular opening, right? That said, learn how to choose the best ones.

Cylindrical. Carry alkaline or lithium batteries made this way, in their AA, AAA and AAAA designations, to share the charge with objects that need it. Please note that the manufacturer does indeed recommend their use, and if so, buy as many as you need in packs of 1 - 12.

Rectangular. Unlike the previous ones, this robust design is a battery with one connector and two terminals. We recommend their use in acoustic equipment such as electric guitars. Also to power smoke detectors, some toys, or as a power supply for electric clocks requiring 9V power.

Push button. Their disc shape allows them to fit into circular spaces. Choose them to optimise the operation of your portable devices: wristwatches, audio players and calculators. Their voltage ranges from 1.2V - 3V, so check which one is suitable for the unit where it will be placed.

Voltage

We know that the actual capacity of the power system is highly dependent on the voltage. Therefore, the latter must be equivalent to the device where it is used. However, it is worth distinguishing between the most common or standardised considerations, so that you have a concrete idea of the ideal potential.

1,2 V. This electrical potential usually corresponds to AA and AAA rechargeable items. Despite its low voltage, it will work in industrial, medical and household applications. This voltage will definitely not work in devices that demand more power. So it is wise to evaluate your applications.

1,5 V. You will commonly get standardised 1.5 V batteries for electronic devices and phone accessories. Distinguish between the cylindrical and button design before carrying them, as they must be perfectly adapted to the device where they will be used. As you can see, it is not enough just to order batteries with this voltage from the supplier.

6 V - 9 V. Consider purchasing 6-9 V models because of their average life span, which will keep the device powered for at least 230 hours at maximum performance. They are also an excellent recommendation for academic projects and high power when connected together.
