The Best Biotin: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying biotin

What is biotin?

Biotin belongs to the group of water-soluble vitamins, more precisely to the vitamin B complex. It is also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H. Especially in the beauty industry, it is known to have a protective function for skin and hair. Biotin plays an important role as a prosthetic group of enzymes, namely as a coenzyme in metabolism. In addition, it is also a crucial factor in the cell nucleus, where it is important for the epigenetic regulation of gene function.

For whom is biotin suitable as a food supplement?

Basically, every person should try to cover the daily recommended daily requirement of biotin. The body needs the vitamin B7, as already explained, in order to be able to fulfil the functions in the body efficiently and properly. If you want to do something good for your skin and nails in particular, then it is recommended that you supply your body with this daily amount.

Age Daily biotin intake in micrograms (estimated value)
0 to under 4 months 5
4 to under 12 months 5-10
1 to under 7 years 10-15
7 to under 10 years 15-20
10 to under 13 years 20-30
13 to under 15 years 25-35
15 years and older 30-60

What are the functions of biotin in the body?

Biotin is a component of enzymes. Enzymes, in turn, are involved in metabolism, thus also biotin. The biotin-dependent enzymes process the nutrients taken in daily in their activity so that the body can use the individual components. The nutrients are carbohydrates, fats and proteins and represent the usable components of food. Biotin promotes the growth of blood cells, sebaceous glands, nerve tissue, skin and hair. This is why it is so popular in the beauty industry.

Why should you take biotin as a supplement?

Vitamin B7 or biotin has numerous effects in the human body that go far beyond the beneficial effects on hair and nails. Important and noteworthy effects of sufficient biotin in the body are:

  • Balancing effect on blood sugar levels
  • Normalisation of cholesterol levels in the blood
  • Strengthening of the energy metabolism
  • Prevention of gestational diabetes
  • Promoting hair growth
  • Strengthening finger and toenails

How does biotin work for skin problems?

Vitamin B7 also plays an important role in maintaining beautiful and healthy skin. With insufficient biotin intake, the following skin diseases can occur:

  • Conjunctivitis
  • Eczema
  • Leiner's disease
  • Dermatitis

This can be caused by the disturbed fatty acid metabolism triggered by the biotin deficiency. Such an imbalance in the body is one of the main causes of skin problems. Moreover, in most cases, the skin is the first indicator of risk when there is a biotin deficiency. Other symptoms may include dry and irritated skin, also known as dermatitis.

Without a clear diagnosis from a doctor, both skin and nail problems cannot be clearly concluded to be biotin deficient.

What does biotin have to do with hair loss?

Biotin plays a special role in hair growth. Hair needs the vitamin because it supports the so-called keratin proteins, which ensure resistant hair. If a biotin deficiency occurs, it can lead to severe fatigue, cramps and risky weight loss, as well as hair loss or thin, splitting and brittle hair. If hair loss has been identified as a symptom due to a diagnosed biotin deficiency, replenishing the depots with biotin supplements should be considered immediately.

Research indicates that a biotin deficiency disrupts fatty acid metabolism, which is most likely to lead to hair loss. In addition to biotin, the nutrients zinc and selenium are also thought to help maintain beautiful normal hair. A balanced diet should also contain sufficient amounts of these two substances.

How does biotin work for nail problems?

Biotin activates the metabolism and promotes the regeneration of the nail bed. The vitamin B7 also helps to produce keratin - the most abundant protein in nails. Since it is also involved in the production of collagen and elastin, which ensure a healthy skin structure under the nails, biotin is also said to help strengthen the nails here.

How much does biotin cost?

The average cost of biotin products is between EUR 18 and EUR 30. The prices vary depending on the contents of the package, dosage, ingredients, etc. At the moment, there are many combination products on the market that are specialised in strengthening skin, hair and nails. Therefore, the products rarely contain only biotin, but several ingredients.

Is there an alternative to biotin?

Since biotin cannot be produced by the body itself, it must be supplied to the organism from outside. There is no alternative to biotin because it is a unique vitamin that takes over and shows individual functions and effects in the human body. If one follows a balanced and varied diet, no deficiency symptoms should arise. In the following table we have listed foods rich in biotin and added the biotin content. It is intended to show which foods you should include more often in your daily routine in order to cover your needs.

Biotin-rich foods Biotin content in micrograms per 100g
Beef liver 100
Peanuts 34
Bananas 5
Walnuts 20
Brie 5

Interestingly, the bacteria living in the small and large intestine can also produce biotin and make it available to the human body. However, it is not yet 100 % clear whether the released vitamin B7 can actually be absorbed and utilised by the body. To summarise everything you need to know about vitamin B7 or biotin, we have included this video here.

Decision: What types of biotin are there and which is right for you?

Do you want to include biotin in your diet? Then it is first important to know the difference between the types of biotin. Basically, you can distinguish between four types of biotin:

  • Biotin tablets and capsules
  • Biotin drops
  • Biotin jelly bears
  • Biotin Shampoo

Depending on your reasons for wanting to take biotin, a certain biotin product is best suited for you. It is important that you first familiarise yourself with both types in order to make the right decision. Each form has different advantages and disadvantages. We will explain these types of biotin in the next section. This should help you find the right biotin product for you. Below you will find a detailed explanation and the advantages and disadvantages of using each type.

What distinguishes biotin tablets and capsules and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Both tablets and capsules have the advantage of a clear dosage. Each tablet and each capsule contains a clearly stated amount of biotin. This means you know exactly how much biotin you are taking daily. It is important to note whether the tablets and capsules contain high-dose vitamin B7, i.e. consist of 100 % biotin, or whether it is a combination product of several ingredients.

  • Exact dosage
  • Practical and easy to take
  • Tasteless
  • Dosage amount given
  • Liquid recommended for intake

Depending on the product type, there will be more or less biotin in the capsule or tablet. Taking the tablets or capsules is usually recommended together with some liquid. This advocates a better and easier intake by mouth. In addition, you can easily take the tablets or capsules with you and transport them if you are often on the go.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of biotin drops?

Biotin drops are sold in small glass bottles with a pipette and are therefore available in liquid form. The liquid usually contains other ingredients, such as natural flavours or sweeteners, in addition to biotin. However, they are also dosed and taken by mouth with the help of a pipette.

  • Multiple intake options
  • Faster and higher absorption
  • No further liquid intake necessary
  • More difficult to dose
  • Limited availability on the market

The clear advantage of drops is that they allow faster and higher absorption compared to other forms. In addition, the drops can be added to a meal or drink and can therefore be taken and used in more ways. In fact, drops are not as prevalent in the market as tablets or capsules. This is why they are seldom found in the stationary trade.

What distinguishes biotin gummy bears and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Biotin gummy bears are a tastier alternative to other vitamin preparations. In most cases, they are a combination of several ingredients that are beneficial for skin, hair and nails. These include zinc, folic acid, coconut oil and other vitamins. It should be noted, however, that the bears are often enriched with sweetener or sugar to improve the taste.

  • Good taste
  • alternative to classic food supplements
  • Several (possibly undesirable) ingredients
  • Lower amount of biotin

The bears are supposed to make taking a food supplement tastier and more fun. That is why they are also very suitable for children. They are taken orally, by mouth, as usual. However, to achieve the taste, many other ingredients, such as flavourings, are added.

What distinguishes biotin shampoo and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Biotin shampoos are mostly products that specialise in hair loss or other hair problems. The shampoos contain many different active substances and ingredients that are supposed to have positive effects. For example, there are shampoos that have been specially developed for clearly defined target groups.

On the one hand, there is strengthening beard and hair care for men, and on the other hand, shampoos that contain unique formulas against hair loss. Each of these individual shampoo series contains a variety of different ingredients. However, the application via hair washing is pretty much the same for all products.

  • Clear address of the target group
  • Works specifically for a hair problem
  • Controversial absorption capacity
  • Low amount of biotin per unit of use

Compared to all other biotin types, the shampoo is applied locally and not by ingestion by mouth. Likewise, the dosage and actual absorption through the skin is more difficult or very low. Whether our scalp can actually absorb the water-soluble substance via the superficial horny cells of the skin and hair remains controversial.

Buying criteria: You can compare and evaluate biotin based on these factors

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to decide between the different biotin products. These aspects will make it easier for you to compare and evaluate the different preparations. We hope that this will make it easier for you to find the right product for you. You can use these points to compare and evaluate the biotin products:

  • Ingredients
  • Dosage
  • Dosage form

In the next section, you can learn more about the individual criteria and use them to make your decision.

Biotin can be purchased in its complete purity (100% biotin) or as a combination of several ingredients. The combination products are usually available in capsule or tablet form. In addition to biotin, they also contain other ingredients such as zinc and selenium.

Often such products are specially developed for strengthening the hair or nails and therefore contain several ingredients. Pure vitamin B7 or biotin products are made from 100 % biotin. Usually, the dosage and high quality of such products are highly touted.

The dosage should be given special attention when choosing a biotin product. Depending on the aim of taking a biotin supplement, the dosage plays an important or less important role.

With combination products, the dose of biotin per unit of intake is usually much lower than with pure biotin products.

Of course, other ingredients are included instead, which also have their justification. The food supplements listed above are also designed to cover the daily requirement.

If, on the other hand, you are trying to compensate for an existing biotin deficiency, you should resort to medicines. Once a deficiency has been diagnosed by a doctor, he or she will prescribe or recommend a product/medicine that is suitable for you.

Dosage form

You can take biotin in different forms. Depending on your preference, you can choose between the following dosage forms:

  • Tablets and capsules
  • Drops
  • Shampoo
  • Gummy bears

Capsules, tablets and drops are taken orally by mouth. The recommended dosage for each type can be found either on the product packaging or in the package leaflet. Biotin shampoos are very much aimed at the target group who want to strengthen, care for or grow their hair. The shampoos are applied locally by using them when washing the hair.

It should be noted, however, that the biotin concentration in such care products is often very low, which affects the effectiveness. Biotin gummy bears are usually special vitamin preparations for skin, hair and nails. They are taken by mouth just like capsules and drops. As with other food supplements, the recommended intake can be found in the package insert or packaging.

Facts worth knowing about biotin

Does biotin help speed up wound healing?

According to studies, vitamin B supplements in particular are said to accelerate and improve wound healing. The study was conducted in patients with periodontitis who had undergone access flap surgery. 50% of the participants received a vitamin B complex (including 50 micrograms of biotin), the rest a placebo.

The result of the test group was significantly better for the clinical attachment level for shallow and deep surgical wounds. However, no further significant difference between the placebo and vitamin B groups was observed. To benefit from the above-average wound healing properties of biotin, the daily requirement should be met as recommended. An overdose, with the desire to stimulate wound healing, will have no effect due to the natural kidney excretion of excess biotin.

Is biotin also suitable for dogs, cats and horses?

Biotin is just as popular in the human world as it is in the animal world. Dog, cat and horse owners alike buy biotin products to treat brittle claws, hooves, a dull coat or flaky patches of skin on their animals.

For horses, biotin is often used to promote the resistance of the hooves. Problems in the hoof area can lead to lameness and severe pain in horses. Dogs and cats also benefit from biotin-rich food. It not only promotes metabolism, as in humans, but also ensures good skin, coat and claw structure.

Are side effects to be expected when taking biotin?

Biotin is generally known to be very well tolerated. As already explained, it is necessary for numerous functions in the body and is therefore good for the human organism.

Side effects are therefore not to be expected as long as a dosage of up to 10 mg daily is not exceeded.

Moreover, biotin is a water-soluble vitamin, which excretes an excess of biotin via the kidneys. This is why there is rarely an upper limit to the dosage of biotin products.
