This time, we want to review a product that cannot be missing in our bedrooms or living rooms to make our stay as cosy as possible and to keep our temperature warm during the mildest days. Yes, we are talking about blankets.

As basic as this product may seem, there is a wide range of different options to choose from. The most important thing is that it is a model that can not only tuck you in during your dreams and cold days, but also decorate your spaces and accompany your experiences.

  • Among the variety of blankets you will find are those made of materials such as cotton, polar fibre, polyester or wool. Each of them has specific characteristics and special care that will help you decide which option best suits your needs.

What are blankets and what are their advantages?

What we know as a blanket is nothing more than a textile element that offers us warmth and shelter during cold periods or contexts, in order to keep our temperature stable and provide us with greater comfort in our spaces.

They are made of materials that are comfortable against the body and can provide a feeling of warmth while they are in use, especially during sleeping hours. Most of them can be machine washed and dried, which saves us a lot of time.

Here is a list of the advantages you will have from the first day you get the ideal blanket for you, so you can start planning your next purchase for your health, wellbeing and comfort.

Advantages
  • They stabilise our temperature
  • Their materials are comfortable
  • They work as a decorative piece
  • They are easy to wash
Disadvantages
  • Not all of them give the same result
  • Some materials are very delicate
  • Some must be washed by hand
  • They cover a lot of space

Cotton, wool, polyester or fleece blankets - what should you look out for?

Blankets can be made from a myriad of materials, including vegetable, animal or synthetic origin. Today we have selected the most common materials so that you can choose the best option according to your needs and reality.

Cotton. Cotton implements provide durability and instant softness. This material allows moisture to breathe out of the body and keep it feeling fresh. It is machine washable and allergy friendly. Use them when temperatures are not too severe to stay cool or when dealing with small babies.

Wool. It is one of the traditional materials for woven blankets and its effectiveness is high, as well as being decorative. It not only protects us from the cold, but also retains the heat produced by the body to keep us stable. To avoid deformation, hand-washing is recommended. Use them if the cold increases a lot to keep you warm.

Polyester. It is a synthetic material that offers softness and pleasant texture. They are less heavy than wool or cotton blankets and super resistant to fading or tearing. This fabric is suitable for allergy sufferers and can be machine washed without any problems. Use them every day to have a lightweight blanket on hand that won't cause allergies in children.

Fleece. This is a great option for very warm spaces or people who are sensitive to low temperatures. They come in different thicknesses and insulate the cold very well. Their texture is very soft and cosy, and they are machine washable. Use them in very cold climates if you do not suffer from allergies and there are no fireplaces nearby, as they are flammable.

How much does a blanket cost?

In general, blankets are usually quite affordable for anyone, depending on the material used, the brand, the manufacturing process, among others.

When we talk about hand-woven blankets, more extensive, or made with more exclusive materials, prices can increase to 30 or even 60 pounds, when it comes to elaborate models of greater distinction. Regardless of this price gap, it is possible to find excellent options for affordable amounts.

Buying criteria: factors that allow you to compare and rate the different models of blankets

After knowing the advantages of owning the best blankets and the materials to which they can be adapted to your comfort and satisfaction, we will list other aspects that you should study beforehand so that your choice is as successful as possible.

  • Size
  • Washing
  • Coverage
  • Hypoallergenic properties

Size

Although all blankets have a standard size (usually 127 by 152 centimetres) it is important to know the dimensions of your bed and the height of the person who will be using it to ensure complete coverage. The standard size will fit a single bed.

If you are well over five feet tall or have a twin or larger bed, we recommend purchasing a larger size blanket for a longer range. You can place larger blankets or buy two of them if you prefer each person to have an individual blanket.

Washing

As previously mentioned, not all blankets can be machine washed and dried due to the nature of their materials and their cleaning requirements. Here are the specifications for both types of washing.

Hand wash. Although some pieces of clothing require hand washing, it is not the same to wash a piece of clothing as a whole blanket, due to the fatigue, effort and space it would require. This cleaning technique is necessary in woollen blankets, to avoid deformations and mistreatment that a machine can generate.

By machine. Most of the blankets can be adapted to washing machines and dryers, however, it is suggested to apply soft cycles and cold water to avoid the wear of these fabrics and to conserve the product for much longer. This applies to cotton, polyester, fleece and similar blankets.

Coverage

Depending on the climate, your sensitivity to cold, the temperature of your home and other similar aspects, you should choose the blanket that is most useful.

For example, if you live in a mostly warm area, where you have short periods of cold weather, it is preferable to choose cool and light models, such as cotton and polyester blankets.

If, on the other hand, you are very sensitive to warm temperatures and are in a mostly cold environment, we suggest you opt for thicker blankets that can effectively wrap you up and keep your body warm for much longer, such as polar fleece or wool blankets.

Hypoallergenic properties

While for many this may not be a big problem, for allergy sufferers certain blankets can work against their peace of mind and rest. Ordinary blankets are not designed to counteract the effects of dust mites or dust that cling to them.

Knowing that the night's sleep is the most important time of the day for proper energy recovery, choose polyester or cotton blankets if they will be used by allergy sufferers, and try to wash them frequently to avoid the spread of any allergens.
