The Best Bobby Car: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a Bobby-Car

What is a Bobby-Car?

The BIG-BOBBY-CAR is the first car for toddlers from the age of 12 months. The Bobby-Cars are ergonomically shaped and, because of their design, enable basic motor skills to be learned.

Braking, sliding and steering in interaction is a very good developmental task for a one-year-old child.

The Bobby-Car was developed to help young children learn to walk. By paddling with the legs, the child can move the car along. The Bobby-Car has fully functional steering. It is a red four-wheeled car made of plastic, just under 60 cm long and about 40 cm high. It has been rolling since 1972 and is still manufactured almost unchanged. Its friendly design is still very popular with children.

Did you know that 47 years have passed since the first Bobby-Car was bought? For 47 years, the red Bobby-Car has simply been part of the nursery. Today, however, there are not only more red ones, but they are also commercially available in countless colours and models.

In the meantime, the Bobby-Car is available in different colours and designs. In addition, there are now BIG New Bobby-Cars and special editions that discard the classic design and are modelled on contemporary real cars, Mercedes-Benz SLK and Porsche. The robust vehicles are modelled on the big originals down to the last detail and are equipped with lots of playful functions. The sports car sliders are a little bigger than the classic Bobby Cars and are therefore only suitable from 18 months. The slide car is not suitable for babies who are not yet able to stand on their legs. Your child should already be able to stand on its own and have already made its first attempts at walking. In the video you can see the differences between the classic BIG Bobby-Car and the newer version, the BIG New Bobby-Car.

From what age is a Bobby-Car suitable?

The manufacturers recommend the Bobby-Car from the age of 1. The sports car models are only recommended from 18 months. Basically, it depends on your child's development when he or she can drive a Bobby-Car. Most children can already stand and walk on their own at 12 months. As a result, they can drive a Bobby-Car without any problems.

What advantages do Bobby-Cars have over other ride-on cars?

Other ride-on cars are bigger and sometimes wider than the BIG Bobby-Car models. Therefore, your child may not be able to drive it at the age of 12 months. Larger cars are heavier and therefore not easy for one-year-olds to handle. The advantage of larger slide cars is that two small children can sometimes sit behind each other. Unlike other slide cars, the Bobby-Car has whisper tyres made of solid rubber, which are ideal for noise-sensitive parents. In addition, the seats are more comfortable because they are made of higher quality material.

What additional accessories are available to buy for Bobby-Cars?

If the desire for even more functions is great, then you will find the ideal addition for the slide car in the range of accessories. There are various trailers that match the respective designs. With these, the little drivers can not only transport toys, but also take the water jug or heavy shopping bags home when they go shopping. What is really unique is the retrofit with the BIG Multi-Sound-Wheel. The easy-grip steering wheel has lots of child-friendly buttons with original sounds of the big vehicles. You can also equip the Bobby-Car with LED lights and attach a push rod or pull rope. It is possible to attach any number of accessories to the Bobby-Car. Be it a sound steering wheel, a push rod, a trailer, a towing rope or a number plate.

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate Bobby-Cars

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate Bobby-Cars. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular Bobby-Car is suitable for your child or not. In summary, these are:

  • Age
  • Material / Item weight
  • Maximum load
  • Design / colour / extra equipment

In the following paragraphs you can read about the individual purchase criteria and how you can classify them.

We have already dealt with age in detail above. Nevertheless, we would like to point out once again that it basically depends on the motor and physical abilities of your child. You should primarily take an individual look at your own child in order to prevent the child from being overtaxed at an early age. The most important factor for buying a Bobby-Car is that your child can already stand safely. As a rule, your child can drive a Bobby-Car at the age of 12 months, provided that all motor and physical abilities of your child are in favour.

Material / item weight

Bobby-Cars are mostly made of plastic, as this material is very light and therefore easier for children to handle. Most Bobby-Cars weigh 3 to 4 kg.

Maximum load capacity

The carrying capacity is less relevant. Bobby-Cars are bought for toddlers at the age of 12 months and are usually not driven longer than up to the age of six. The maximum load capacity for the slide cars is between 35 and 50 kg. Since children of this age do not normally reach this weight, the load capacity is irrelevant.

Design / colour / extra equipment

The BIG-Bobby-Car-Classic has no extra equipment and has still been manufactured true to the original since 1972. The BIG New Bobby Cars, on the other hand, are available in different colours and designs. The slide cars have become real eye-catchers thanks to various stickers. From police designs to larger models such as Mercedes-Benz SLK, BIG offers children a wide range of different designs. There is something for every child, whether boy or girl.

Did you know that there is a Bobby-Car model of famous car brands? The world-famous car company Audi not only makes cars for the big car fanatics, but the little racers don't have to do without brand models either.

In the police design it's the safety steering wheel with electronic sound and light module, in other models it's the whisper tyres or LED lighting. The sports cars even have a speedometer and tachometer.

Since children usually choose their Bobby-Car according to their favourite colour, parents should pay attention to some other features and equipment characteristics of the slide cars.

There are also extra accessories that you can buy for your child. For example, there are different trailers that fit the respective models. There are also push rods and pull ropes, matching shoe protectors, number plates, sound steering wheels, horns and much more.

Almost everyone knows the classic BIG Bobby Car. This version without any frills is by far the most successful. (Image source: / ariesa66)

Trivia: Interesting facts about Bobby Cars

Where does the name BIG Bobby-Car come from?

BIG-SPIELWARENFABRIK GmbH & Co KG got their name BIG because they made "big" toys and the English name BIG fitted well in front of any toy name. They were looking for a clever but also easy name for the sliding vehicles that everyone could remember and that would be pronounced the same all over the world. This is how the name Bobby-Car came about.

How long can my child drive the Bobby-Car?

The toy car is recommended for children from 12 months to six years. However, it can happen that your child is already too big for it at the age of four and would rather ride a running bike or bicycle. Therefore, we recommend buying the Bobby-Car quite early so that your child can use it to improve learning to walk and then switch to a bike. The maximum load capacity of a Bobby-Car is 50 kg.
