Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying bovine collagen

In order to inform you comprehensively about the effectiveness of bovine collagen and to give you an understanding of the current state of science, we have summarised all the important information in the following sections.

What is bovine collagen and how does it work?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies. It is in our tendons, bones and blood vessels. Unfortunately, as we age, we no longer produce as much collagen, which is why it's a good idea to take supplements. These consist largely of bovine collagen. Studies have shown that collagen can prevent skin ageing in particular (1) and promote bone growth. One study even shows that collagen can also protect the intestines.(2)

Skin

As we age, it becomes more difficult for our bodies to produce collagen. This is why we get wrinkles and sagging skin. However, if you increase your collagen levels with supplements, you can slow down the natural ageing process and keep your skin moisturised.

So if you want to have smooth skin in the long term, you should turn to collagen supplements, as confirmed by a study that found that collagen improves the skin. (3)

A blind study proved that collagen can help reduce cellulite. Women were given one capsule of collagen a day. The results showed that women who did not take a placebo did significantly better and measured a lower degree of cellulite.(4)

Muscles/ bones

Collagen is also found in muscles and bones. It is good for building muscle and strengthens bones. A study of rats given collagen for 4 weeks found that bone structure in particular benefited from collagen supplements. (5) Muscle strength is supported by collagen. Another study found that collagen reduces fat mass during exercise and builds muscle mass. (6)

Hair/nails

A study has now found that bovine collagen is good for hair and nails. In the study, 25 test persons were given collagen for 24 weeks. The nails of the test persons grew on average 12% faster and broke off about 42% less.

80% of the participants were very satisfied with the results of their nails. (7) Another study says that hair was also less brittle due to a regular intake of balm containing collagen. (8)

When and for whom is it useful to take bovine collagen?

Taking bovine collagen is particularly useful for people who are getting older, as collagen formation slows down with age. This is also the reason why we get wrinkles and joint pain as we age.

If you want to have nicer nails, stronger bones or firmer skin, then it's a good idea to take the supplement.

Studies have found that older people who take bovine collagen and exercise also strengthen their muscles even better. (9)

How much do bovine collagen products cost?

That depends on the product and the brand. In principle, there are products that start at 12 euros up to products that cost up to 50 euros. It depends on the amount and the brand. It is important that you make sure that the product is of good quality.

Where can I buy bovine collagen?

You can buy bovine collagen both online and offline in shops. Bovine collagen is also available in pharmacies. Some shops are:

  • Amazon (online)
  • Vitaminexpress (online)
  • Drugstores like DM or Bipa (offline)

What types of bovine collagen are there?

When buying bovine collagen, you can choose one of three types:

  • Pills
  • Powder
  • Drinks

Pills

The most popular way to take supplements are still pills. They are easy to take and easy to transport. On average, pills take effect after 3-5 minutes. This is when the substances are released into the body.

The disadvantage of capsules is that you have to swallow them. Some people have a problem with that. If this is the case for you, you should rather get a powder or a drink. There are now several companies that produce and sell bovine collagen capsules. Many of them are made in Germany and are of excellent quality.

Powder

If you don't want to take tablets, you can also take powder. You can dissolve it in water, shakes or other drinks and drink it once a day. Most powders are tasteless, but there are also flavoured powders. Since capsules do not hold as much powder, you often have to use them several times a day. With powders, one drink per day is enough. There are also many different powders. As with capsules, it is important to pay attention to the origin and quality. Depending on your taste, you can choose the one that suits you best.

Drink

In the meantime, there are also some ready-made drinks or drinking ampoules that contain collagen. These have the characteristic that they usually have a strong flavour, but are also very aromatised.

How should beef collagen be dosed?

That depends on the form of the product. The dosage differs depending on the dosage form:

  • Pills should normally be taken twice a day during a meal.
  • Powders and drinks can be taken once a day in the morning or evening. Please follow the dosage on the packaging. A study has shown that with a daily intake of 50mL, the effect works in 60 days. (10)

What alternatives are there to bovine collagen?

Collagen is present in numerous foods. Some of them are:

  • Red fruits and vegetables (cherries, strawberries, peppers, blueberries, tomatoes, etc.)
  • Animal products such as gelatine or bone broth
  • Eggs
  • Avocado
  • Oatmeal

If you don't eat animal products because you are vegan/vegetarian, there are vegan collagen supplements. You can also find them online and in drugstores/pharmacies. Studies have found that herbal supplements work at least as well. (11)
