Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying Brahmi
To begin with, we want to give you some basic information about Brahmi. We will explain what Brahmi is, what it is suitable for and what the advantages and disadvantages are. We will also show you where you can buy Brahmi and how much money you should expect to spend.
What is Brahmi?
The proponents of Ayurveda have known and appreciated Brahmi for more than 3,000 years. Initially, brahmi was used by scholars to avoid getting tired while studying long texts. Today, botanists around the world are experimenting with the herb and making preparations that are increasingly popular. The effect of Brahmi has already been the subject of numerous studies and is based on the valuable ingredients of the plant:
- Secondary plant substances
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin B
- Vitamin E
- Vitamin K
Most of the healing power is in the leaves of the plant. Of particular importance are the flavonoids and saponins, which belong to the secondary plant substances. These not only promote thinking and concentration, but also protect the body from free radicals.
How much does Brahmi cost?
What effect does Brahmi have?
The substance is said to be able to stop the reduction of cognitive thinking ability that occurs in old age. Brahmi affects the serotonin level of the body. This explains its effect on stress, depression and anxiety disorders. The plant is counted among the adaptogens and thus has a harmonising effect on body and mind. Other effects at a glance:
|Oxidative stress||Brahmi has an antioxidant effect and can thus protect the body from free radicals and slow down the ageing process.|
|Asthma||Asthma patients can benefit from the vasodilating effect of Brahmi.|
|Inflammation||Brahmi counteracts inflammation and is often used externally for skin conditions.|
|Fever and pain||Brahmi reduces fever and can also help relieve pain.|
Brahmi can also be used as a cosmetic product. Applied to the scalp, Brahmi oil has a soothing effect. It also stimulates hair growth.
Why is Brahmi especially suitable for older people?
What should be considered when taking Brahmi?
Up to now, there have been no official guidelines regarding the dosage according to need.
In the studies mentioned above, a dosage of 300 milligrams daily was usually assumed. Brahmi does not have an immediate effect. Therefore, it should be taken consistently over a period of at least two months. (2)
How should Brahmi be dosed?
It is recommended to take Brahmi during meals. Bioavailability increases when fats are present as a means of transport.
The bacoside content should not be less than 50 percent. This refers to the high-dose plant extracts in Brahmi capsules. If you want to take Brahmi as a powder, the dose must be increased to correspond to the bacoside content mentioned. Depending on the final product, 800 to 1,500 milligrams should be taken daily.
Does Brahmi have side effects?
However, interactions may occur in combination with other nootropics and antidepressants if the ratio of the individual ingredients has not been optimised. These interactions may include digestive problems or headaches. If you are taking prescription medication, discuss the use of Brahmi with your doctor in advance. Pay special attention to the following warnings:
|Pregnant women and nursing mothers||The effect of taking Brahmi on pregnant women and nursing mothers has not yet been sufficiently scientifically studied., It is therefore recommended that Brahmi should not be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding.|
|People with thyroid problems||Brahmi influences the hormone balance and can thus contribute to hyperthyroidism.|
|People with slow heartbeat||Brahmi slows down the heartbeat., Those who already have a slow heartbeat should use the plant sparingly or avoid it completely.|
|People with ulcers||It is thought that taking brahmi could worsen ulcers,, This could be related to increase in glandular activity.|
Complaints in risk groups cannot be ruled out. Therefore, persons with organic diseases should consult a doctor before taking Brahmi.
Decision: Which types of Brahmi are there and which is the right one for you?
Basically, you can distinguish between four types of Brahmi:
- Brahmi Capsules
- Brahmi Powder
- Brahmi Oil
- Brahmi Tea
The different types each have advantages and disadvantages. Depending on what you prefer, a different type is suitable for you. In the following section we would like to make the decision easier for you.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Brahmi capsules?
When you take Brahmi capsules, you don't have to worry about the dosage. Even when you are on the go, you always have the right amount of Brahmi at hand. Usually one capsule contains the corresponding daily dose, so that a single intake is sufficient to be supplied with the active ingredients.
Before taking, the instructions on the packaging should be followed. The recommended duration of use is twelve weeks. If you have problems taking the capsules, use one of the other dosage forms mentioned.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Brahmi powder?
Brahmi powder is a partial and inexpensive alternative to capsules. However, it is more time-consuming to take.
The powder has to be mixed with liquid several times a day. The bitter taste is not to everyone's liking. Relatively high doses are necessary to achieve the value of the extracts in the capsules. Brahmi powder is less suitable for quick consumption on the go.
What distinguishes Brahmi oil and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
Brahmi oil is of interest if you want to use the plant externally. The oil is economical in use and can be easily dosed with the help of the enclosed pipette. Its use as a hair care product has been proven in Asia for thousands of years.
If Brahmi oil is applied to the hair roots, hair loss can be reduced, the hair is protected against premature greying and obtains a well-groomed and shiny appearance.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Brahmi tea?
Taking Brahmi tea is easy and can be done virtually on the side. However, Brahmi tea is hard to find so far. Those who cannot or do not want to take capsules have found an alternative here.
To achieve a comparable effect, several cups of tea should be drunk daily over a period of several weeks. The taste of Brahmi tea is described as spicy and aromatic. Those who sweeten it with honey conceal the bitter taste.
Buying criteria: These are the factors you can use to compare and rate Brahmi
In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate Brahmi. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular Brahmi is suitable for you or not. In summary, these are:
In the following paragraphs, we will explain to you what is important in the individual criteria in order to make your purchase decision easier.
Before you buy Brahmi, you should know how you want to use the product. The application is, as already discussed, possible without hesitation. However, some risk groups should refrain from using it. These include pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as people who suffer from a slow heartbeat. Both external and internal application is possible. The following application possibilities are conceivable:
|Internal use||External use|
|Stress||compresses for cough|
|Depression||compresses for bronchitis|
The type of application determines the choice of dosage form and pack size. Long-term use should be assumed. Pack sizes with a three-month supply are ideal.
For the product to be convincing in its mode of action, it should be pure Brahmi extract or pure plant powder.
Combination preparations are often offered. These contain other natural plant substances or vitamins. A proven composition is, for example, the addition of ginseng and ginkgo. If you are aiming for the mode of action described here, you should prefer a pure Brahmi preparation.
A reliable mode of action can most likely be expected from a high-quality product. When buying organic products, it is excluded that the food supplements are contaminated with harmful substances. Organic products are subject to regular controls by independent bodies. The natural plant substance is also suitable for vegetarians and vegans. When buying, you should only make sure that the capsule shells are made of vegetable substances and do not contain gelatine.
Trivia: Facts worth knowing about Brahmi
In the last section of this article, we answer a few important questions about Brahmi and its intake. You will learn which studies there are on the effect of Brahmi and how you can grow the plant yourself.
What studies have been done on the effects of Brahmi?
Science has already taken a closer look at Brahmi. A study by the Neuropsychology Laboratory of the University of Victoria in 2001 followed a similar research design and found the following. In the double-blind study, one group of healthy adults was given a placebo and the other Brahmi. A neuropsychological examination took place after five and after 12 weeks.
After 12 weeks, the Brahmi group showed a clear improvement in the processing of visual stimuli, the ability to comprehend and learn, and memory. The study also showed that both short-term and long-term memory were positively influenced. (3) Furthermore, the 2008 study of the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland examined the effect of Brahmi on the memory of older people. After 12 weeks, the result was that the overall mental performance of the test subjects improved, which was verified with the help of a learning test. Thus, Brahmi can counteract the natural cognitive ageing process and help against memory loss in older people. (4) In 2014, Indian scientists investigated the efficacy and tolerability of an herbal extract of Brahmi with regard to the symptoms of ADHD children.
The 31 children between 6 and 12 years of age diagnosed with ADHD who were included in the study took one capsule of the herbal substance (225 mg per capsule) daily over a period of six months. Every 15 days, the parents had to come with their children to the treatment centre to check compliance with the therapy and the potential occurrence of side effects.
After six months, the researchers found up to 50 percent reduction in ADHD-typical symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, learning problems and impulsivity in the 27 children available for evaluation. Except for problems in the social sector, the investigated symptoms could be significantly improved by the regular intake of the Brahmi extract. (5)
Another study conducted by the Department of Phamacology of the Banaras Hindu University in 2000 dealt with the connection to stress and investigated to what extent Brahmi can be anxiety-relieving and stress-reducing. The study showed that the plant substance is a so-called adaptogen. Adaptogenic natural substances, by botanical definition, support the body in being resistant to stress by helping to correct the body's imbalance in homeostasis.
Homeostasis is often thrown out of balance by stress. Broadly speaking, homeostasis of the body refers to various regulatory processes related to body temperature, hormone balance, blood circulation, etc. By botanical definition, adaptogenic herbs have the power to counteract this. Brahmi is one of these herbs. (6)
Can I grow Brahmi myself?
Brahmi is not native to our latitudes, but it can be grown from seed and cultivated quite successfully, as long as the requirements of the Asian marsh plant are taken into account.
Brahmi needs a moist and nutrient-rich soil. It is best grown in a small indoor greenhouse. If you don't have one, you can help yourself by putting a plastic cover over the plant pot. The seeds are only lightly pressed into the soil but not covered with earth, as they are light germinators. The seeds will develop quite quickly on a warm windowsill. The seedlings can then be moved to larger containers and continue to be watered abundantly. We have summarised what you should bear in mind when growing Brahmi in the following overview.
|What to do||What to bear in mind?|
|Select a location||Brahmi thrives in a sunny to semi-shady location, The soil should not be too dry and provide sufficient nutrients.|
|Sow the plant||It can be grown in the spring in a greenhouse, The plants need high temperatures and high humidity.|
|Water the plant||As it is a marsh plant, the soil should not dry out., Brahmi can be watered from below by placing the water in a planter or planting tray.|
|Fertilise plant||In the first year after sowing, there is no need to fertilise., In the following year, use a fertiliser that is particularly rich in nitrogen.|
|Propagate the plant||Brahmi is very easy to propagate. Cut off a stem and place it in a glass filled with water. After a few weeks, roots will have formed.|
|Harvest the plant||The leaves of the plant can be harvested all year round., During the winter months this should be done rather sparingly.|
When the plant is large enough, the leaves can be harvested. You can also eat a few fresh leaves every day. The leaves should be dried without exposure to sunlight. Then you can cut or powder them. Dried Brahmi leaves can be stored in a dry and dark place for several months.
