What are caffeine tablets?

This is usually contained in the form of a white, odourless powder and can thus be described as a wake-up and stimulant agent. Caffeine tablets are characterised by their simple intake and the associated effective effect. They fight any signs of tiredness in a very short time and increase your performance.

Why do people take caffeine tablets and what do they do?

There are different reasons for taking caffeine tablets. Whether it is to perform better in sports, to get better grades, to get through a long car ride, a night shift or a party. Caffeine is the most commonly consumed stimulant worldwide, i.e. a substance that has an excitatory effect on the psyche, increasing concentration and eliminating signs of fatigue. (1) Caffeine tablets have a relatively wide range of effects as a result of ingestion:

  • Stimulation of the central nervous system
  • Increase of heart activity, increase of pulse
  • Increase in blood pressure
  • Dilatation of the blood vessels
  • Dilatation of the bronchi
  • Increase in urine production
  • Stimulation of peristalsis (muscle activity) of the intestines
  • Reduction of blood flow in the brain and intestines

Daniel Borota and a team of scientists from Johns Hopkins University, published in Nature Neuroscience, conducted a study in which 160 subjects (previously not coffee drinkers) took a caffeine tablet or a placebo after a learning and memory task.

Those who took 200 mg of caffeine immediately after learning remembered the learning content better later. The dose of 200 mg is the ideal dose. With only 100 mg, there was hardly any difference to the placebo group. 300 mg, on the other hand, brings no further advantage over 200 mg. (2)

What are the undesirable side effects of caffeine tablets?

Since caffeine tablets are a medicinal product, some unpleasant side effects may occur. These include the following examples:

What ingredients do caffeine tablets contain?

The caffeine tablets of individual manufacturers can differ in their other ingredients. As a rule, however, quite a few caffeine tablets (apart from caffeine, the content of which is usually 200mg per tablet) contain these other substances:

Lactose-1-water carrier (helps to distribute various substances of the remedy in a controlled way)
Maize starch binder and disintegrant (so that the active ingredient is absorbed faster in the body)

The substances mentioned have no direct influence on the subsequent effect of the caffeine tablets, but rather serve as an aid in the production process.

However, all these other ingredients are considered unhealthy and some are even classified as hazardous to health.

How quickly do caffeine tablets work?

It is common for caffeine to take 30 to 45 minutes to enter the bloodstream and take effect. On average, the stimulant effect of caffeine is short-lived and lasts for about one to two hours.

However, pregnancy slows down the processing of caffeine and the caffeine level stays at its level longer in pregnant women.

When should I never take caffeine tablets?

As caffeine tablets are a stimulant, it can increase certain illnesses.
Some conditions can be exacerbated by caffeine.

If you have one of these conditions, you should avoid taking it if possible, or only take it in very small amounts, as the caffeine it contains can aggravate the condition:

  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Cardiac arrhythmias, such as sinus tachycardia/extrasystole
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Anxiety syndrome/anxiety
  • Hypertension
  • Hyperthyroidism

It is therefore essential that you read the package leaflet before taking caffeine tablets or, at best, talk to your doctor.

Caffeine tablets during pregnancy

If you are pregnant, you should be careful with the consumption of caffeine. Scandinavian studies show that caffeine affects the weight of the unborn child and can also delay the birth. The World Health Organisation (WHO), on the other hand, has so far classified a daily intake of 200 to 300 milligrams of caffeine as safe.

Like other substances, caffeine passes unfiltered through the placenta into the foetus' body. In contrast to an adult human being, the unborn child lacks the enzymes to break down the stimulant substance, so it accumulates unhindered in the brain tissue.

In addition, the increase in adrenaline has a negative effect on the blood supply to the placenta. Caffeine consumption often leads to the embryo weighing less than expected.

It is therefore advisable to refrain from consuming caffeinated drinks during pregnancy or at least to limit them as much as possible.

Caffeine tablets for increased performance in sports

Caffeine not only wakes you up, but also increases the performance and endurance of athletes. (3, 4) In former times, caffeine was even on the International Olympic Committee's doping list until the World Anti-Doping Agency removed it from the list of banned substances with effect from 1 January 2004. A small dose now and then before sport is generally harmless.

However, if taken regularly or in high doses, it can have a negative effect on your circulation and heart and damage your health. Therefore, if you are considering using caffeine as a doping agent for sport, you should not do so too often in high doses.

Did you know that taking caffeine before exercise has a moderate effect on testosterone levels? Studies show that caffeine could increase cortisol levels by 50% and testosterone levels by 15%. Testosterone levels play a crucial role in protein synthesis and muscle building.

Caffeine against hair loss

Caffeine is a well-known and proven hair loss remedy. But if you think that overconsumption of coffee or increased intake of caffeine tablets will give you a full head of hair, you are mistaken. In order for caffeine to strengthen the hair root and hair growth, it must be applied directly to the scalp so that it can work on the hair root and achieve the desired effect.

Alternatively, you can use caffeine shampoos or caffeine tinctures. These are available in drugstores, pharmacies and on the internet.

Massage the caffeine shampoo into the skin for two minutes.

However, the effect of caffeine shampoos is controversial, as it is questionable whether enough caffeine reaches the hair roots.

As a rule, for it to work properly, it should be massaged into the scalp for two minutes. This massage alone can have a positive effect on hair growth, as it stimulates blood circulation in the scalp and thus also the transport of nutrients.

Despite all this, the use of caffeine as a hair growth agent is controversial. In fact, it is unclear whether the reduced hair loss can be attributed to the caffeine, the circulation-stimulating massage or to a placebo effect.

Losing weight with caffeine tablets

Caffeine tablets not only help you stay awake, but can also help you lose weight, because the highly concentrated caffeine in them boosts the metabolism and has a positive effect on the basal metabolic rate (the amount of energy or calories the body uses per day at complete rest). (5)

And that's not all: caffeine can even speed up fat metabolism, helping your body to break down fat even faster than usual. In addition, taking caffeine tablets can curb your appetite. According to some experiences, caffeine can also make you feel fuller for longer, which automatically makes you eat less.

However, you should be aware that caffeine tablets alone will not help you achieve your dream figure.

As with any other dietary supplement, you need to eat as healthily as possible and exercise as much as possible to achieve success.

Caffeine tablets for headaches

If you have a headache but don't have any painkillers at hand, you can also take caffeine tablets or drink a cup of coffee. Caffeine improves blood flow to the brain, which can relieve the pain. If this alone does not help, you can also add some lemon juice to your coffee.

This is said to not only relieve tension headaches, but also migraine attacks. One study, for example, examined how well the combination of ibuprofen plus caffeine works against moderate to severe pain after an operation.

Combining and taking 100mg of caffeine with 200mg of ibuprofen improved pain relief compared to taking a painkiller alone. (6)

Caffeine tablets as a drug

Anyone who likes to party through the weekend and doesn't want to waste a precious second on sleep will probably know the problem: Sooner or later, you get tired reluctantly. So many reach for caffeine tablets, but do not consume them orally as intended, but crush them up and snort them through the nose.

By being absorbed through the nasal mucosa, the substance has a faster and much stronger effect.

Snorted caffeine can have a lethal effect more quickly.

However, this is not recommended, as it is very unhealthy and can lead to irritation of the nasal mucosa. In addition, high snorted amounts can achieve a lethal effect more quickly than caffeine taken normally.

Inner restlessness, epileptic seizures and impaired consciousness or even coma states can be the result of an overdose. In the worst case, cardiac arrest can occur.

Caffeine can also be described as an addictive substance because it has comparable characteristics of illegal narcotics.

On the one hand, the effect of constant doses wears off, so that over time higher and higher amounts are needed to obtain the desired effect. Secondly, withdrawal symptoms such as sudden exhaustion, headaches, lack of concentration and depression can occur when caffeine is discontinued.

How long does it take the human body to break down caffeine?

How quickly caffeine is broken down in the body can vary from person to person, with women generally taking longer to completely break down caffeine. On average, however, it takes about eight hours for the body to completely break down and excrete the active ingredient.

What alternatives are there to caffeine tablets?

Of course, there are some alternatives to caffeine tablets that you can quickly turn to. These are different drinks that contain caffeine and thus have the same effect. Below, we'll show you more about the different drinks and their advantages and disadvantages.

Coffee

Drinking coffee has the same effect as taking caffeine tablets, with one tablet being equivalent to about 2-3 cups of coffee (depending on the type of coffee).

But always keep an eye on the price-quantity ratio. Most of the time it is worthwhile to buy larger quantities for not much more money.

Efficacy

Efficacy depends on a number of factors. On the one hand, the effect of different manufacturers can vary. On the other hand, you should bear in mind that even the same product can have different effects from person to person, because some people have developed a certain resistance to this active ingredient through high and regular coffee consumption and others have not.

How should I take caffeine tablets?

Most caffeine tablets contain 200 mg of caffeine, which is equivalent to about 2-4 cups of coffee. In general, 1-2 tablets a day are recommended and safe.

Do not take the tablets on an empty stomach.

You should take them unchewed with as much liquid as possible so that they can develop their optimal effect.

You should also eat something before taking the tablets so that you do not take them on an empty stomach. With a small dose, the central excitatory effect of caffeine usually comes to the fore, which means that basic mental functions such as drive and mood are particularly affected. At a higher dose, the respiratory centre and the circulation are also stimulated.

You should not use the tablets for a longer period of time without a doctor's order. In the case of a small overdose, charcoal tablets, verapamil and diazepam can provide relief. In extreme cases of seizures, you should consult a doctor immediately.

An overdose of caffeine can be life-threatening under certain circumstances.

Furthermore, caffeine tablets are only intended to be taken orally (by mouth) and this is how you should take them. You should never crush these tablets and snort them through your nose. This is not only painful, but also unhealthy.

How are caffeine tablets made?

Nowadays, most caffeine tablets are made from artificial caffeine. It is produced using the so-called grape synthesis and is named after its inventor Wilhelm Traube. It takes several individual steps to produce caffeine synthetically. The starting materials from which caffeine is ultimately made are cyanoacetic acid and urea. In simplified terms, the combination of the starting materials produces uracil.

Further chemical reactions follow, finally producing theophylline, which is also found in cocoa. A final reaction with chloromethane then finally produces caffeine. The end product - synthetic caffeine - is a white, odourless powder that is pressed into tablets with other ingredients for the production of caffeine tablets. Occasionally, there are also caffeine tablets made from natural caffeine.

These are made from caffeine powder, which is extracted from tea leaves or coffee beans and then mechanically pressed into tablets with other ingredients, such as binding agents.
