How are caffeine tablets made?
Nowadays, most caffeine tablets are made from artificial caffeine. It is produced using the so-called grape synthesis and is named after its inventor Wilhelm Traube. It takes several individual steps to produce caffeine synthetically. The starting materials from which caffeine is ultimately made are cyanoacetic acid and urea. Further chemical reactions follow, finally producing theophylline, which is also found in cocoa. A final reaction with chloromethane then finally produces caffeine. The end product - synthetic caffeine - is a white, odourless powder that is pressed into tablets with other ingredients for the production of caffeine tablets. Occasionally, there are also caffeine tablets made from natural caffeine.
