The Best Cannabis Tea: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying cannabis tea

What is cannabis tea made of?

Cannabis is one of the many words used for hemp. They are synonyms that are often used in colloquial language.

Cannabis tea consists of cannabis flowers that have to be boiled in water. In these flowers, the cannabionides are not present in their pure form, but are "locked up" in the flower as carboxylic acid. In order to "free" the active ingredients of the cannabis flower and thus obtain the desired effect, you have to boil the flowers long enough. The heat chemically alters the cannabionides from the carboxylic acid and thus releases them. This chemical process is known as decarboxylation.(1)

THC and CBD are cannabinoids of the cannabis plant. There are around 100 different known cannabinoids, and all of them are also found in the cannabis plant. The two best-known cannabinoids are THC and CBD. The question is, what is the difference between these two substances?

Cannabis tea contains less than 0.2% THC

This means that hemp tea contains almost no THC, only increased CBD.
Hemp tea is usually made from commercial hemp or edible hemp. The THC content and the cultivation of this hemp is strictly monitored.

What is THC?

THC is the abbreviation for "tetrahydrocannabiol" and is one of the many active substances found in the cannabis plant. The special thing about this substance is that it has a psychoactive effect. This substance is therefore responsible for the "high" when using cannabis.

However, the function of THC in the plant is quite different: THC is used as a protective agent against viruses, parasites and bacteria.

THC thus has an antibacterial effect in the plant, but a pyschoactive effect on humans. (2)

A substance of the cannabis plant that has antibacterial effects on humans is CBG.

What is CBD?

CBD is another cannabinoid that occurs in the hemp plant.

CBD has anti-inflammatory and analeptic effects on humans.
CBD binds to the vanilloid receptor type 1 which causes some stimulation and leads to pain relief. By binding to the GPR55 receptor, CBD causes an anti-inflammatory symptom (3)

CBD is very popular due to its properties and has a positive reputation. CBD is also consumed for its calming and relaxing effects against stress and sleep problems (4)

Here we summarise the most important differences between these two cannabis substances:

Active ingredient Property
THC THC is a cannabinoid that has a psychoactive effect on humans. THC leads to "being high".
CBD This active ingredient is popular for its calming, pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects

Does cannabis tea make you high?

Legal cannabis tea has a THC content of only 0.2% or less. Because THC is not soluble in water, the active ingredient is not released when the tea is boiled. You can, however, add some fat like butter to release the THC. However, you will not get "high" from it. The THC content is so low that you will not feel its effect.

How quickly does cannabis tea take effect?

We recommend that you start with a low dosage.

Give your body time to get used to the changes. Increase the dosage step by step. It is best to discuss the optimal amount of cannabis leaves with your doctor before consumption.

The desired effect only occurs after about 30 minutes or more. So take your time and wait in a relaxed manner.

How long does the effect of cannabis tea last?

The effect of hemp tea lasts up to several hours (5) We recommend that you consume the tea in the evening after work, comfortably at home on the sofa, as the tea can also lead to tiredness.

You should therefore avoid drinking cannabis tea in the morning before work. Because of its relaxing effect, the tea is also often used for sleep disorders or to combat stress.

How do you prepare cannabis tea?

Before you prepare your cannabis tea, you must first make an important decision: When should the decarboxylation take place? This can be done either before or during the tea preparation.

The cannabis tea can be consumed warm or cold.

  • Method 1 - Before making tea:
First, let the cannabis leaves heat up a bit in the oven and then pour about a quarter of boiling water over them and cover. Let the leaves steep in the water for about 15 minutes. You need to add some fat, as THC is not soluble in water. With a little milk, butter, cream or other fat you can extract the THC from the leaves. Then pour off the water. (6)
  • Method 2 - during tea preparation:
Boil the flowers in a closed pot with about half a litre of water and some fat (butter, coconut oil, milk) for one hour. (7)

If you don't like the taste of the tea, you can also add some lemon, ginger, honey, almond, soy or cow's milk.

Do not let the tea steep too long, otherwise the bitter taste will intensify.

The cannabis tea can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two days.

Where can I buy cannabis tea?

  • Clobazam: active ingredient in antiepileptic drugs (12)

If you are taking any of these drugs, you should avoid consuming cannabis tea.

In general, it should be noted that hemp tea enhances the effect of painkillers and slows down their degradation. This is especially the case with the painkiller diclofenac.

  • Redness of the eyes
  • Dry mouth

  • tea made from a good blend of herbs is needed for a delicious taste

Buying criteria: You can compare and evaluate cannabis teas based on these factors

Origin

In Europe, each country has different laws regarding commercial hemp cultivation. In Germany, a THC content of 0.2% is allowed, while in Switzerland only 0.1% is allowed. As you can see, there are plenty of differences. So find out what the legal situation is in the country of the producer and in your country.

Ingredients

In Germany, a THC content of up to 0.2% is legal.

So your hemp tea should not have more than 0.2% THC to be a legal product. The CBD content should also be taken into account; the higher the CBD dosage in the tea, the stronger its relaxing effect.

So it's best to start with a low dosage and see how your body reacts to the tea first. Afterwards, you can increase the dosage if necessary. In case of strong complaints such as pain, inflammation or insomnia, you can also consume a hemp tea with a slightly higher CBD content.

The two ingredients you should pay attention to are THC and CBD and their proportion. Of course, hemp tea itself also has other additional ingredients such as terpenes and terpeniods, flavonides, vitamins and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.

  • Terpenes and terpeniods: anti-inflammatory, antibacterial effect. (14)
  • Flavonoids: antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and circulation-enhancing effect. (15)
  • Vitamins B1 and B2 (16)
  • Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids: vital fatty acids. (17)

Retailer

Your dealer or supplier of the tea should have a certain aplomb and transparency. His products should be tested and certified, and you should be able to see that. In case of questions or uncertainties, you should be able to contact the trader.

In general, your trader should make a nice and serious impression. This way, you can be sure that the quality is right and that you will receive a pure, natural cannabis tea when you buy.

Quality

When buying, make sure that the tea comes from reliable sources and that the quality and the supplier are checked and certified. Also note that the tea is made from hemp leaves and/or hemp flowers.
The contents of the bag should be completely dry! If the flowers or leaves are slightly damp, mould can develop.

Because of the risk of mould, cannabis tea should be stored in a dry place.

Facts worth knowing about cannabis tea

Is cannabis tea illegal?

A THC content of up to 0.2% is legal in Germany.

Cannabis tea contains the active ingredients CBD and THC. The active ingredient THC is the one responsible for the "high".
However, hemp tea can be bought legally in Germany. This is because the THC content of the tea is very low.

In Germany, commercial hemp has been modified so that it only has a THC content of 0.2%. (18) Thus, its cultivation and trade is legal. Another reason for legal hemp tea is that THC is not water-soluble. Thus, the THC is not released when boiled in water. However, many add some fat like butter to release the THC.

Of course, you can also get your hemp tea from abroad, but you have to pay attention to the THC content. The law regarding the THC content in cannabis varies from country to country.

Can I smoke cannabis tea?

Hemp tea is a common herbal tea that is not intended for smoking.

  • So you can't smoke pure hemp tea.
  • Hemp tea is not suitable for the vaporizer....
  • However, you can use the tea "for stretching" with tobacco.
