  • Carnosine has a versatile effect. Especially its ability to stop the ageing process is spectacular.
  • Carnosine is only found in meat and is therefore recommended as a food supplement for vegetarians and vegans. Athletes also like to use this substance to increase strength and endurance.

The Best Carnosine: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying carnosine

What is carnosine and where is it found?

Carnosine, also called L-carnosine, is a natural substance that is found in many places in the human body. It is mainly found in nerve and muscle cells. Carnosine is made up of the amino acids L-histidine and beta-alanine. Such a protein substance is also called a dipeptide. (1)

Protein is therefore the basis for the formation of carnosine. A healthy and balanced diet should also contain enough protein. (Image source: unsplash.com / Mae Mu)

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and beta-alanine forms the precursor of carnosine. It is often used as a dietary supplement to combat a carnosine deficiency. Carnosine is water soluble and has an antioxidant effect. This means it provides a protective function for the cells and detoxifies the body.

A deficiency is relatively rare, but is possible due to an unbalanced diet and diets. L-carnosine itself is only found in animal products and therefore vegetarians/vegans are far more likely to be affected by a deficiency.

How does carnosine work?

Life extension of the cells

As you know, we get older and older through cell division. This is because important proteins and DNA are destroyed over time. The sugar molecules that are responsible for this are inhibited by carnosine. The cells can thus survive several cell divisions and do not die so quickly.

This process is called glycosylation. Sugar molecules lead to abnormal combinations of sugar and proteins. These are not only toxic to the body, in old age they also lead to many diseases. Common diseases include Alzheimer's, dementia, diabetes, heart disease and strokes. Oral supplementation with L-carnosine led to a significant improvement in oxidative stress, glycaemic control and kidney function in one study.

Thus, carnosine could be a safe and effective strategy for the treatment of children with diabetic nephropathy. (2) Carnosine reduces their incidence and manages to support the organism and its functioning.

Forgetting everything is probably one of the worst things you can imagine as a human being. Measures to prevent it are therefore all the more important in order to alleviate the symptoms and the course of the disease. (Image source: pixabay.com / geralt)

Carnosine thus seems to fulfil its function as an important food factor that tries to prevent or impair the ageing of the brain. (3, 4)

Carnosine detoxifies

Very often our body is exposed to harmful substances from the environment, which we also take in through our diet. These toxins, which are then in the organism, can be eliminated by carnosine and taken out of the body again.

Carnosine ensures the stability and resistance of our cells and supports the immune system. Even heavy metals can be eliminated by carnosine.

Carnosine - its most important functions

As you already know, carnosine helps you stay young longer by slowing down the ageing process. It has an antioxidant effect, so it protects your body from free radical damage. By strengthening your immune system, you are less susceptible to disease, have better wound healing and generally feel fitter.

Carnosine is also called a neuropeptide because it is found in large quantities in the brain and nerve cells. There it protects the brain and its performance. (1) Furthermore, it can be used in addition to conventional medications for neurological diseases.

Carnosine is very well known for its rejuvenating effect and is used as an anti-aging product. (5) Since carnosine consists of protein, it is very important for muscle building. If you do a lot of sports, you need carnosine to increase your performance. (6)

Who is carnosine suitable for?

Carnosine is basically suitable for everyone, as long as the recommended daily dose is not exceeded. It doesn't matter whether you take it to prevent age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's, dementia, etc., or to improve your performance in sports.

It is especially recommended for vegetarians and vegans, as plant-based foods do not contain carnosine. Furthermore, with increasing age, a sufficient supply of carnosine should be ensured. Your carnosine level has a great influence on the length and quality of your life.

The older you get, the more it decreases and your body cannot produce enough. According to experts, supplementing with L-carnosine would therefore be worthwhile in order to stay young longer and prevent diseases.

How should carnosine be dosed and taken?

Carnosine is found in meat and meat products and is naturally produced by your body. Therefore, this substance is completely safe for you, but you must adhere to the recommended daily dose. It depends on which product you buy. Often you should take 1-2 capsules per day.

Simply refer to the package leaflet to be on the safe side.

Type daily recommendation
capsules 2 pieces
powder max. 4g or 2 times 2g

No side effects are known so far. However, if you regularly overdose, this can increase corticosterone levels, which can lead to hyperactivity and attention deficits.

How much does carnosine cost?

Carnosine is almost always available in capsule form. Capsules cost between €30 and €50 per 100 grams. Of course, the packs are cheaper because they contain fewer grams. Most of the time you will find one- or two-month packs. A monthly pack costs around 17€.
Type Price
Capsules (100 g) 30 - 50 Euro

Carnosine powder is priced relatively the same as the capsules. If you buy capsules, they will contain mostly the beta-alanine. However, this is the precursor of carnosine and is just as successful in correcting a deficiency. Carnosine is usually already completely broken down in the small intestine and is therefore more difficult to absorb.

What alternatives are there to carnosine?

Hyaluronic acid

As a well-known anti-ageing agent, hyaluronic acid works wonders. It is not for nothing that it is contained in so many cosmetic products. It has the legendary property of binding water in the skin and thus provides a plumping effect. Hyaluronic acid also moisturises your skin and makes it look youthful and radiant.

You should also know that it occurs naturally in your body and does not cause any side effects. The acid is characterised by its high tolerance. The ideal daily dose is 200-300 mg. You can take hyaluronic acid as a food supplement or use it in other products such as creams.

Resveratrol

You probably don't know it yet, but resveratrol is also very effective in counteracting ageing. It belongs to the group of polyphenols, which in turn are active as antioxidants. This means that they protect you from free radicals that damage your cells.

If you want to include resveratrol in your diet, you should eat raspberries, grapes and peanuts and drink cocoa from time to time. Research has shown that resveratrol protects your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays and stimulates collagen production.

This keeps your skin looking healthy. So far, no side effects have been discovered with resveratrol and 500 mg is considered the ideal daily dose. However, overdoses should be avoided as they can lead to bloating, diarrhoea and nausea.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 is a substance that is very well known and widely used in the cosmetics industry. However, it is not a vitamin, as humans and animals can produce it themselves in small quantities. In old age, the self-production of coenzyme Q10 decreases rapidly. In 77 to 81-year-olds, the content of this substance drops to only 43% compared to 19 to 21-year-olds.

So what makes coenzyme Q10 so special? Its function is to supply the cells with energy and thus extend their lifespan. Researchers assume that taking coenzyme Q10 has a positive effect on life expectancy in the long run. The substance is also found in sardines, olive oil, poultry and broccoli.

The recommendation for adults is 200-250 mg daily; the body usually breaks down excess coenzyme Q10 on its own. However, a strong overdose of 1000 mg daily and more can cause side effects such as digestive disorders, abdominal pain or flu symptoms.

Other positive properties of substances

There are many other substances that have similar effects to carnosine. For example, there is vitamin A (retinol), vitamin C, zinc, biotion and also folic acid. All these substances are good for your skin, hair and nails or have an antioxidant effect.

Decision: What types of carnosine are there and which one is right for you?

If you want to buy carnosine, there are two alternatives you can choose between:

  • Carnosine capsules
  • Carnosine Powder

Depending on the area of application, you can choose one of these two categories. The following sections will help you make your decision.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of carnosine capsules?

Carnosine capsules are almost the most popular form in which you can take carnosine. They are optimally dosed to cover your daily needs and the price is also affordable.

Most suppliers sell only laboratory-tested products with high quality, which is reflected in the customer reviews. The capsules from most manufacturers are also suitable for practically everyone.

Animal gelatine is generally only found in isolated cases, but to be on the safe side, read up on it again.

Advantages
  • Easy to take
  • Inexpensive
  • Mostly certified quality
  • Optimal dosage
Disadvantages
  • In exceptional cases, animal gelatine is present (rare)

What distinguishes carnosine powder and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The same can be said about powder as about capsules. The difference is that you have to dose it yourself. About 4 g per day is sufficient, but you should not exceed this amount. You can stir it in water and then drink it. Some powders even come in different flavours. Especially among athletes, the powder is preferred.

The price here depends on the supplier; there are cheaper and more expensive powders on the market. Powder can often be more sensitive, as it is not sealed like capsules.

Proper storage (cool, dry and well sealed) is very important in order not to provide a target for viruses, germs and bacteria.

Advantages
  • Inexpensive
  • Mostly certified quality
  • Self-dosing possible
  • Different flavours (depending on the supplier)
Disadvantages
  • Dose yourself
  • Powder offers greater attack surface for bacteria, viruses and germs

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate carnosine

In the following, we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the many possible carnosine products. The criteria you can use to compare carnosine include:

  • Price-performance ratio
  • Capsules or powder
  • Country of manufacture
  • Customer review

In the following paragraphs, we will explain what is important in each of the criteria.

Price-performance ratio

According to customer reviews, a high-quality product really delivers what it promises. No matter whether it is used as a support for muscle building or as a rejuvenating effect.

Carnosine can have a very good effect and even significantly increase the performance of the brain. In summary, it can be said that if you pay attention to the quality, positive effects are also evident.

However, the price is affordable and compared to wrinkle-reducing anti-aging creams or performance-enhancing preparations for athletes, it is definitely cheaper.

Capsules or powder

It's up to you what you prefer. There are also hardly any differences in price. We have explained the advantages and disadvantages above.

Country of manufacture

When you buy carnosine supplements online, you should pay attention to the country of manufacture. This applies to all medicines and dietary supplements. Each country has different legal requirements regarding manufacturing and distribution.

Germany, for example, often has stricter regulations, which means that the majority of German medicines and food supplements are also laboratory-tested as standard. Regular controls and various seals and certifications also provide more security.

Customer reviews

As with almost everything you buy online, customer reviews are of course crucial. You would hardly buy something that hasn't been rated well, would you?

So please take the time to read them, especially for products for your health. You can also recognise good suppliers by the fact that they respond to customers' questions and react quickly if something is not right.

Facts worth knowing about carnosine

What is the connection between carnosine and the ageing process?

Carnosine, or more scientifically L-carnosine, was discovered and researched in Russia at the beginning of the 1990s. For a long time it remained unknown until numerous other countries also carried out tests and confirmed the effect.

Carnosine could thus delay the cell death of senescent cells, extend their lifespan and even ensure their growth.

Some researchers even went so far as to claim, on the basis of their studies, that carnosine could even reverse the ageing process of the cells. A cell culture that was already subject to senescence received carnosine and thus benefited considerably compared to the other cell culture that did not receive carnosine.

The favoured cell culture showed improved cell division and symptoms of ageing partially disappeared. When it was retransferred, i.e. the carnosine was withdrawn, the signs of senescence reappeared.

We all wish to look young for as long as possible. The secret of eternal youth has not yet been discovered, but carnosine already has an amazing effect when it comes to ageing. (Image source: pixabay.com / Free-Photos)

So what does this mean for our youth?

Another Russian experiment on mice showed that those animals given carnosine had twice the chance of reaching their maximum lifespan. Untreated mice, on the other hand, lived only half as long.

Carnosine enormously reduced the typical signs of old age. The mice had a significantly younger appearance and a beautiful shiny coat well into old age. Only 5% of the untreated animals still showed such youthfulness in old age.

Can carnosine even work against cancer?

It is often circulated that carnosine also works against cancer. Although this has been partially proven in animal experiments, definitive scientific proof has yet to be found. Carnosine could inhibit the growth of cancer cells and also counteract chronic liver damage, according to the study results on animals.

What is known, however... Carnosine prevents age-related diseases such as cataracts, strokes, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, etc.. Carnosine also has a positive effect on neurological diseases and other cognitive disorders. These include, for example, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, depression, schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome, Asperger's syndrome, autism, dyslexia, etc..

If you are particularly interested in naturopathy, this video should be very interesting for you. Robert Franz has lived in harmony with nature for many years and also believes that the effects of natural remedies should not be ignored. Of course, carnosine does not replace medication and cannot cure these diseases, but it can provide a preventive or alleviating measure.
