Chicken Grill: Our Picks
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a chicken grill
What is a chicken grill and how does it work?
Most chicken grills work on the same principle: the food is placed on a spit that is set in motion by a motor. As the food rotates, it is evenly irradiated with heat from all sides and fried. Many chicken grills have a temperature and speed control so that you can influence the optimum grilling result yourself. In commercial use, there are also chicken grills where the chickens do not rotate on spits, but are placed in baskets. In the following, however, we will focus primarily on chicken grills for home use or mobile snack bars.
What does a chicken grill cost?
|Vertical chicken grill||approx. 50 to 100 euros|
|Mini oven with chicken grill||approx. 60 to 250 euros|
|Chicken grill for the gastronomy||from about 1000 Euro|
It is often worth buying a second-hand chicken grill, especially in the catering sector. The cost of a used grill is often a fraction of the price of a new one.
What alternatives are there to chicken grills?
An oven is usually available in every household and is therefore the simplest alternative. In terms of size, a chicken can usually be prepared well in the oven. The disadvantage is the lack of a rotating spit in the oven, so you can only achieve a really crispy result from all sides with aids such as a chicken holder.
You can also use a wooden grill to prepare a grilled chicken. A mobile wooden barbecue also allows you to prepare a delicious chicken in the garden or when camping. Unfortunately, this alternative is only suitable for outdoors and its use is therefore limited to the warm seasons.
Decision: What types of chicken grills are there and which one is right for you?
If you want to buy a chicken grill for home use, you basically have a choice between two different types:
- Mini oven with chicken grill
- Vertical chicken grill
The variants differ in their features and each has different advantages and disadvantages. In the following section, we would like to help you make your decision.
What distinguishes a mini oven with chicken grill and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Mini ovens with a chicken grill are particularly popular for home use because they offer numerous other uses in addition to the grill function. In a mini oven, you can also bake your pizza or rolls thanks to the supplied baking tray, prepare oven vegetables or, in some cases, use the microwave function.
A mini oven can usually be used to grill up to two chickens at a time. Many even have an integrated rotisserie for this, so that the chicken gets nice and crispy on all sides. For large families, however, the volume of the mini oven may be too small. But especially for single households, they are also a good alternative to the real oven, also because they are more energy-efficient. Nevertheless, mini ovens often have the problem that they are poorly insulated and therefore lose energy. So it's worth looking carefully to make sure you choose one of the good models. A mini oven with a chicken grill is usually the size of a microwave. If you don't already have a microwave, it's often a good option. However, if you already have a microwave, you need to consider whether you can fit a second appliance of this size in your home. The smaller version, the vertical chicken grill, may be a better option for you in this case.
What are the features of a vertical chicken grill and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
With a vertical chicken grill, the chicken is not placed on a horizontal spit, but on a vertical rotating spit. Here, too, the rotating movement achieves an even distribution of heat and the chicken is roasted evenly from all sides. However, there is usually only room for one chicken.
A vertical chicken grill is much more space-saving than a mini oven with grill function because of its vertical orientation. But unlike a mini oven, the uses of a vertical chicken grill are also quite limited.
With a vertical grill, the fat that runs down can be quite useful, as it spreads directly on the chicken like a marinade. This makes the skin even crispier.
In addition to a chicken, a smaller kebab skewer can also be grilled here. However, since both kebabs and chicken are not usually on the menu every day, the grill may be used less often and just sit around.
Buying criteria: You can compare and evaluate chicken grills based on these factors
If you want to buy a chicken grill, you have the choice between different models with different features. In this section, we will show you which aspects you should use to make your choice. The criteria that you can use to compare chicken grills with each other include:
In the following sections, we explain what each criterion means.
Chicken grills are available in different designs and depending on what you want to use the grill for, this should also be included as a decision criterion in your selection. If you want a chicken grill for home use, you have the choice between different smaller models that can accommodate one or two chickens. If you are looking for a chicken grill for the catering industry, you will probably choose a grill that allows you to roast several chickens at the same time. There are also mobile outdoor chicken grills that allow you to roast crispy chickens at garden parties, for example.
Size / capacity
Size also plays a decisive role when choosing a chicken grill. On the one hand, this means the capacity, but also the external dimensions of the chicken grill. Do you only have a small kitchen or a small snack bar, or do you have a lot of space for the grill? Before you go out and buy a chicken grill, the first thing you should think about is where it will be placed. The larger the external dimensions of the grill, the larger the capacity. Do you need the barbecue only for yourself or do you have a large family and therefore a higher consumption? For home use, there are vertical chicken grills and mini ovens with grill function, which usually hold one or two chickens. If you want to equip your food truck with a large model, then you have the choice between chicken grills with several rows of spits, which can grill eight, ten or even more chickens at the same time.
Depending on how the chicken grill is operated, whether with gas or electricity, the roasting effect also differs slightly. With electric chicken grills, the heat is generated by heating elements. As with ovens, however, it usually takes time for the grill to preheat. Electric chicken grills are available with either a 230V or 400V connection. In a gas chicken grill, gas is let into the grill through nozzles on the back wall, which is then ignited either manually or electrically. The chicken is basically roasted on an open flame and is therefore immediately ready for use. To ensure that the roast chicken does not burn, the rotation speed of the spit is therefore also higher on gas barbecues. Gas grills can be operated with either natural gas or liquid gas.
For a roast chicken to be nice and crispy, it is important that the chicken can be grilled evenly from all sides. A good chicken grill should therefore be equipped with a rotating spit that is rotated by an integrated motor. Only in this way can the heat really reach all sides of the grilled food and produce an even browning. If the chicken grill has several rotating spits because it is suitable for more than two chickens, you should also pay attention to the distance between the spits. The individual rows must be far enough apart so that the meat does not interfere with the rotation.
If you want a crispy grilled chicken, you should also take a look at the specified maximum temperature of the grill when buying a chicken grill. You can only achieve a crispy result with a fairly high temperature. If it is also possible to prepare other foods in the appliance, such as with a mini oven, then an appliance with adjustable temperature is definitely recommended.
Trivia: Interesting facts about chicken grills
The right care for your chicken grill
Hygiene is very important when handling meat. Therefore, you should clean your chicken grill regularly to prevent germs from spreading and to enjoy it for a long time. Most chicken grills are made of easy-to-clean stainless steel. Depending on the model of the chicken grill, it can also be partially dismantled so that the individual parts can be easily cleaned in the dishwasher, depending on the size. You should always clean the chicken grill before or after each use. A strong grease solvent such as oven cleaner is best for this. Together with water and a sponge, clean the individual parts of the grill, i.e. the skewers, the grill chamber and the grease drip tray. If the grill has glass doors, you can clean them with a grease-dissolving glass cleaner. Finally, wipe everything dry with a cloth. This will also give the stainless steel a nice shine.
Grilling crispy chicken with a beer can - this is how it's done!
Are you looking for a tasty alternative to grilling chicken on a spit? No problem, with these tips you can make a delicious and crispy chicken without a chicken barbecue.
- Preheat the oven to approx. 180-200 degrees convection.
- Prepare the chicken accordingly. That means: wash the chicken inside and out, remove any feather remains and cut off any excess skin on the underbelly. The best way to close the opening at the neck is to hold the skin together with a wooden skewer.
- Now rub the chicken well with a seasoning mixture. It is best to rub under the skin as well.
- Finally, brush with a little oil or rub by hand. This keeps the spices where they should be and the oil helps the skin to crisp up.
- We now place the ready-seasoned chicken on an opened and previously thoroughly cleaned beer can. A more hygienic option would be to pour the beer into a narrow glass.
- Place the chicken on a baking tray in the preheated oven.
- The escaping fat can drain off well due to the vertical position of the chicken and at the same time acts as a marinade for a crispy skin.
- Depending on the size, the chicken is ready after about 1-1.5 hours!
It's up to you which seasoning mix you use for the chicken. There is no one right recipe. The easiest way is to use a roast chicken spice mix, but you can also give free rein to your creativity.
