Purchase Criteria: Factors to Compare Graduation Ring Models

Graduation is coming up and you still can't find a cool graduation ring? No problem! In this section we bring you some tips on how to choose the best graduation ring for the new professional

  • Graduating style
  • Ring material
  • Shape and thickness of the ring
  • Shape and size of the stone
  • Symbol of the profession

We will detail each of the criteria throughout this section.

Style of the graduate

Giving a person a jewel is not always a simple task, because the accessory transmits the personality of the person who will wear it. Therefore, knowing the style of the graduate will help in choosing the graduation ring.

Does the person wear delicate or extravagant accessories? Do they like more gold or silver-colored pieces? Has classic or contemporary style?

Answering these and other questions will help you find a graduation ring that will please the graduate. Tip: When in doubt choose a model with timeless design.

Ring material

Generally, the graduation ring is forged in noble metals, such as gold, which conveys the seriousness of the professional training. But there are cheaper options, made of silver.

The graduation ring can be forged in 18 or 24K gold.

If you choose a gold ring, evaluate the carat of the stone - unit of measure that indicates the degree of purity of the gold - being: 14K almost 60% gold, 18K 75% gold and 24K 100% gold.

18K gold - a mixture of copper, zinc, silver and palladium - is used to create strong and durable jewellery, because in its pure state, gold is a malleable and fragile material, which can be crushed with some ease.

Regarding the tone, you can choose between yellow, white or rose gold. If you prefer a white gold model, check if the accessory has received a rhodium bath - metal rarer and more valuable than gold - to ensure the bright silver aspect.

With time, it is natural that there is a rhodium bath wear, so, for the graduation ring to recover the showy appearance, it will be necessary to give another rhodium bath.

Ring shape and thickness

Those who have thin and long fingers should choose a thick and horizontal graduation ring, to add volume and balance the lightness of the fingers. Who has thick and short fingers, should choose a model with vertical detail, to cause sensation of longer fingers.

If the person has wide hands, bet on a large and proportional ring. Those with small hands should invest in a ring that is equally delicate.

Did you know that in academia, there are some confusions regarding certain emblems, so be sure that the symbol on the ring refers to your course before buying it.

Stone shape and size

The graduation ring carries a precious stone - it can be emerald, ruby, sapphire, onyx, tourmaline, amethyst, aquamarine or topaz - in different sizes and shapes. Tip: Another option is the coloured Zirconia stone.

You can find models with round, square, rectangular, oval or triangular stone. Regarding size, stones are measured in points, a system that indicates their weight. The larger the stone, the more expensive the ring will be.

Symbol of the profession

Besides the stone corresponding to the area of activity, the graduation ring may carry the emblem of the profession - formerly, the emblem of the institution of study was used. The traditional models carry this symbol printed on the side of the accessory.

Some courses have official and unofficial symbols. Pedagogy, for example, has as official symbol the fleur-de-lis, but the owl is widely used as emblem of the course, for symbolizing the wisdom.

The most modern models, incorporate the symbol of the profession in the design of the ring. It is the example of the graduation ring of the Medicine course, which presents the carving of two snakes, or Biomedicine, which presents a DNA molecule, in a re-reading of the symbols of the profession.

It is worth mentioning that there is no problem in using a graduation ring without the symbol of the profession. What matters is the meaning that the jewel has for you!
