The Best Clothespin: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying clothespins

What is the function of a clothespin?

Whether in the 19th century or in modern times, the function of clothes pegs, also known regionally as Glupperl or Klupperl, has always been the same: they are used to fasten laundry items to the line of a rotary clothes dryer.

The first clothes peg was made from a simple piece of wood with a slit in the middle. This version was simply pinned onto the textiles laid over the clothesline with an overlap.

Clips guaranteed a better hold of the laundry on the then much thicker linen. Today, they are no longer so suitable for the much finer synthetic linen.

Modern clothes pegs consist of two legs of equal length made of wood or plastic, which are held together in the middle by a spring made of stainless metal. The spring is the hinge of the construction: if you press the clip together at the upper end, the other end opens and you can easily put it over the clothesline with the piece of laundry to be fastened.

When you release it again, the force of the spring holds the lower piece together. In contrast to the original version, this frictionless handling ensures that the textiles are handled more gently.

What types of clothespins are there?

On the one hand, clothes pegs are distinguished by their material. On the other hand, there are models that stand out from the actual function due to their size.

The simplest version of a clothes peg is the traditional peg. It consists of a piece of wood in the shape of a pin that is split in the middle. This split is then simply stuck over the laundry and clothesline. Since the lines are much thinner nowadays than they used to be and the pegs therefore lose their effectiveness, this type is rarely used anymore.

The standard model is made of wood or plastic and is held together in the middle by a tension spring. This can be attached on the outside or inside, whereby an outside spring promises more stability.

In addition to the "normal" clothes pegs, there is a miniature version. These miniature clothes pegs are often called party pegs because they are used to mark or personalise drinks glasses.

Other uses include holding (note) papers together, as an accessory for gift wrapping or as a children's toy.

How much do the different designs cost?

On average, clothes pegs cost between 10 and 20 cents each. The total price depends on the size of the pack. Usually, a pack contains about 25 to 100 clothes pegs.

For normal use, you should buy at least 50 clothes pegs. Over time, you will find out how many staples you need on average and you can always get more. Of course, it is better to have more than too few.

Depending on where you buy your staples and how many you need, the price will vary accordingly.

What is the best way to store my clothespins?

The best way to store your clothes pegs is to collect them in one place. You will need a small basket or clothes peg bag. You can buy special models that are very suitable for this purpose.

Ideally, you can attach or hang them directly on the rotary clothes dryer with the help of a hook. This way, you always have the little helpers close at hand and ready to use.

Decision: What types of clothes pegs are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between three types of clothes pegs:

  • Wooden clothes pegs
  • Clothes pegs made of plastic
  • Stainless steel clothes pegs

Hanging up your wet laundry instead of drying it with the tumble dryer offers you many advantages. You save electricity and the purchase of a tumble dryer. It is also good for the environment. However, it is important to buy the right clothes pegs so that your laundry sits firmly on the clothesline.

Due to the different materials of the clothes pegs, a certain line is best suited for you. Depending on the area of application and the requirements for the clothes peg, there are other advantages and disadvantages in use.

Therefore, we would like to briefly explain the different types in the following section and help you find the right clothes peg for you. For this purpose, we will clearly present the advantages and disadvantages of the three types and thus help you with your purchase decision.

How does a wooden clothespin work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

As a rule, wooden clothes pegs are made of non-staining wood from non-resinous trees. Since the production of these clothes pegs is very inexpensive, they are usually also very cheap. Since wood is a natural material and it is also not painted with environmentally hazardous colours, the clothes pegs are very environmentally friendly.

However, these pegs are also susceptible to mould, which can leave unsightly stains on your clothes. It is therefore best never to leave wooden clothes pegs outside, especially when it is raining. Another reason for this is that they will rot more quickly outdoors, making them unusable.

Advantages
  • Inexpensive
  • Environmentally friendly
Disadvantages
  • Not weatherproof
  • Can stain
  • Break more easily

How does a plastic clothespin work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Plastic clothes pegs are now the most commonly used type of clothes peg. They are also very inexpensive to buy. Unlike wood, plastic is not environmentally friendly. It is not easily recyclable and degrades very slowly in nature. On the other hand, clothes pegs are more stable and break apart less often.

They also don't stain your clothes. Cleaning and drying is also easier than with other types. However, don't leave them in the sun for a long time, as the plastic can become porous and break more easily.

Advantages
  • Cheap
  • Sturdy
  • Easy to clean
  • Dries well
Disadvantages
  • Harmful to the environment
  • Can become porous with heat

How does a stainless steel clothespin work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Stainless steel clothes pegs are particularly popular because of their modern and high-quality appearance. Since stainless steel is also very sturdy, they can also score points with their high durability. Therefore, they usually survive falls without damage.

Unlike the other two materials, you can leave stainless steel clothes pegs outdoors and in the sun without hesitation. They do not become porous, do not mould and are rust-free. Stains are also not transferred to clothing.

Their long durability is probably also the reason for their high price. Stainless steel clips are much more expensive than wood and plastic clips. In addition, a lot of CO2 is released during production, which is not good for the environment.

Advantages
  • Noble appearance
  • High durability
  • Very weather-resistant
  • Withstand falls
Disadvantages
  • High price
  • Environmentally harmful

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate clothespins

Which clothes pegs are best for me and my purposes? To answer this question, there are a few factors that you can use to objectively compare the many different offers.

In summary, these are the following three product characteristics:

  • Material
  • Soft-Grip
  • Quantity

In the next section you can find out what the respective aspects are. This will help you to better compare the offers.

Material

The classic model of a clothes peg is still made of beech or birch wood . The light, non-staining colour and the fact that the wood does not resinate are characteristic of these types.

Since the production costs are lower, the most commonly used version is made of plastic. However, there are major differences in quality here: while particularly inexpensive models can be recognised by a small spring with low tension, high-quality clothes pegs impress with a robust external spring and rubberised anti-slip surfaces.

Modern pegs are made of plastic and are available in many designs and colours.

Soft-grip

High-quality ones offer the special soft-grip. The rubberised surfaces on the inside of the staples are designed to prevent pressure marks on the laundry items and are particularly gentle. Therefore, these clothes peg models are also suitable for very delicate textiles.

Quantity

The price of a supply is not only determined by the material used. Plastic is cheaper to produce than staples made of wood. The number of pieces is also decisive. Small package sizes start at about 20 to 25 pieces. However, there are often offers of 50 to 100 clothes pegs. This is about the number you need for average use.
