Everyone has one, everyone uses one - a coffee cup! You're sure to be happiest about your morning coffee or a hot drink of your choice between meals when you drink from your favourite mug. Or maybe you just like coffee mugs with a cheeky saying. But not every coffee mug suits you, so we've put together a guide for you.

In this article, we would like to give you a few buying criteria that will help you find your new favourite mug. If you're looking for a coffee mug as a gift for someone, you might find our answers to frequently asked questions helpful.

The most important facts

  • There is an overwhelmingly large selection of cool, cheeky and beautiful coffee cups with different motifs or made of different materials. Whether large or small, colourful or monochrome - there is something for every taste. The price is also very diverse.
  • A coffee cup does not only consist of the cup, but there are also sets for the family, matching saucers and much more, which adapts the cup to your needs.
  • The choice of material is the most important factor for a coffee cup, because if it doesn't feel good, cracks in the dishwasher, falls over quickly or gets hot, then drinking pleasure becomes a drinking nightmare.

The Best Coffee Cup: Our Picks

In the following, we have compiled our favourites. This should help you to make your buying decision easier and to find the right coffee cup for your needs.

Buying and evaluation criteria for coffee mugs

To help you find the best coffee mug for you, we have put together some criteria for buying and rating. This should help you to find your new coffee cup as easily as possible.

The criteria that help you compare coffee mugs with each other include:

At this point we will go into more detail about the individual purchase and evaluation criteria.

Size

The size of the coffee cup is a decisive factor if you want to have more than just the usual drink for in between. The size requirements can vary greatly, but even if you are looking for a 2-litre coffee cup, you will find what you are looking for. However, the larger the requirements, the smaller the selection.

The average size is around 0.2 litres and you should orientate yourself according to this value if you need a set for several people. For "to go", however, we recommend a larger cup, as you cannot refill the coffee cup on the way.

Shape

A coffee cup is usually cylindrical and has a handle, but there are many variations in all kinds of shapes. You can design your personalised mug however you like and there are great variations in heart or other shapes.

The shape can influence the taste. For a cappuccino, make sure that the coffee cup is about the same width as it is height. Especially if the coffee is divided into layers, a tall cylinder shape made of glass is recommended, as it allows you to present the work of art in the best possible way.

Material

The material is particularly important. In fact, it is so important that we will divide the different coffee cups according to their material below. In this point, however, we would like to explain which factors are important for the material, because these factors apply to every material from which a coffee cup is made.

A coffee cup should, if possible, be sturdy enough for the dishwasher. Some coffee cups can withstand being dropped on the floor, but ceramic cups in particular will break. The material should not become brittle under any circumstances. There is also the option of purchasing variants that are odour-resistant.

Personalisation options

When you think of coffee mugs, you probably don't think of the plain-coloured mug, but of a mug with a colourful motif or a funny saying. When buying online, make sure that the motif has been well chosen and processed. The motif should definitely not be unrecognisable after the first rinse cycle.

There are not only motifs, but even entire coffee cups that change their colours or reveal sayings depending on how hot they are. This property of a coffee cup is called thermochromism.

Insulation

A coffee cup should keep the temperature of the beverage warm for as long as possible. Some materials are better suited for this than others, but the best-known model for keeping coffee warm is probably the thermo mug or thermo jug.

The best heat insulation for a coffee cup is a lid, which keeps the heat in the cup longer. However, a coffee cup can also have a heat-insulating effect with a lid. Before you buy, find out how well your new cup keeps the coffee warm. For take-away coffee, we still recommend the thermo mug, despite the new technologies used for coffee cups.

Guide: Frequently asked questions about coffee cups answered in detail

Coffee cups are self-explanatory? Not necessarily. These are the questions people are looking for and we want to summarise and answer them for you here.

Why do I need a coffee mug?

There are many reasons to buy coffee mugs. Everyone probably just needs a nice coffee cup to curl up on the sofa with and sip coffee from comfortably.

However, you can also use coffee mugs for work, as it is well known that coffee at work from a good coffee mug works wonders. Coffee mugs also make a simple gift that everyone will be happy to receive: a coffee mug with a personalised saying or motif for the person receiving the gift.

What types of coffee mugs are there?

Below we list the different types of coffee mugs and their most important features.

Material Advantages and disadvantages
Ceramic Rustic look, Cheap production, Very fragile
Porcelain Elegant design, High quality, Robust material, Relatively expensive
Glass Shows the layers of the coffee, Thermal glass is heat resistant
Metal Most stable, gets hot and can burn users
Plastic Lightweight, cheap, stable, takes on taste, Relatively unattractive
Sustainable materials Good for the environment, "Eyecatcher", stable, takes on taste, More expensive than competitors

Sustainable materials include wood, but also coffee cups made from coffee grounds. Especially sustainable cups are to be listed as a homogeneous group, so inform yourself about the pros and cons of your new sustainable coffee cup before buying.

How much does a coffee mug cost?

The prices of coffee mugs can vary greatly. But prices are usually in the following ranges:

Material Price range
Ceramic 2 to 15 euros
Porcelain 2.50 to 10 euros
Glass 3 to 15 euros
Metal 3 to 40 euros
Plastic 1 to 5 euros
Sustainable materials 10 to 30 euros

Coffee cups alone do not cost very much, but the prices for sets are much higher and should therefore be compared beforehand.

How do I clean a coffee cup?

In this question we are dealing with the heavily soiled coffee cup. Not every cup is always equally dirty and these following methods are not necessary for cleaning after a single use. Hopefully, each of us knows how to rinse a coffee cup before resorting to the extreme, right? If not, then your cup might already be one of the hard cases and then you've come to the right place!

Especially with glass cups, you should not be able to see any streaks after rinsing. So always clean the cups in good time to avoid stains. Also, if possible, wash by hand in order to recognise and remove stains immediately. (Image source: pexels / Burst)

Going straight to the dishwasher can clean a cup, but dishwashers can damage the cup in the long run due to chemicals and salts. Our tip is therefore to clean the cup by hand.

You can use various strong agents to get rid of the dirt, including household items such as baking soda, vinegar or denture cleaner. You put these into the cup with a hot cleaner and let it soak in for several hours. Then simply empty out and rinse properly. All residues on the rim and discolouration in the cup will be gone and the cup can shine in new splendour.

Please do not use scratchy sponges on enamel or other sensitive materials. You must also pay attention to the dishwasher suitability! Before buying, find out which rinsing cycles are appropriate for your cup. In case of emergency, you can always ask the manufacturer.

Conclusion

To make good coffee, you need the following: good coffee beans and a proper coffee maker, as well as a suitable coffee cup. The role of a nice coffee cup should never be underestimated. Sometimes the day is made more pleasant simply by unpacking the coffee cup in the morning and smiling at the sight of it. Only a good cup makes the enjoyment perfect.

The favourite cup is individual for each of us, but the choice is large and you have a good chance of finding the coffee cup that suits you best. We hope that after this guide you now know all the factors and what to look for. Once you have found the right size and the best design and know the characteristics of the material, nothing should stand in the way of optimal enjoyment.
