What is a cotton bed sheet and what are its advantages?

A bed sheet is a thin fabric that is used on the bed. There are usually two sheets, one for the base to prevent contact with the mattress and one for the cover. Using this type of bed linen brings aesthetic benefits and helps to a better rest. Cotton is the star material for the manufacture of bed sheets, this is perfect because it is very soft and is suitable for any time of the year, since it acquires the temperature of the body; that is to say, in summer it is very light and fresh, while in winter it keeps the heat.

Using this material is very beneficial, as it does not irritate the body, it helps air circulation while we sleep, as it is a natural material of high absorption, it does not keep the humidity between its fibres. It is also much more durable than other materials. However, its price is much higher.

Advantages
  • Allows air to circulate
  • Regulates temperature
  • Undisputed quality
  • Fabric breathability
  • Absorbs and evaporates moisture
Disadvantages
  • Wrinkles quickly
  • Requires care
  • High prices
  • Poor quality imitations

Cotton percale or sateen sheets - what should you look out for?

Many of us may think that any cotton sheet is good, as it is the most sold material. Don't be fooled, cotton can be woven in many different ways and this will directly influence the quality of the sheet and of course your sleep. We hope this information will help you to identify the best quality.

  • Percale. This is an interwoven fabric where two threads cross each other, one lengthwise and the other widthwise, we could say that this fabric is the standard design. It is light and soft to the touch. This type of fabric can be found mixed with polyester, make sure it is 100% cotton.
  • Sateen. This type of weave uses four strands of yarn horizontally and only one vertically that are interwoven. This results in a soft, elegant, shiny and luxurious looking fabric that is easy to clean, iron and very flexible. Be careful! its name changes to Satin if it is blended with another material such as polyester.
Percale Satin
Thread count 180 thread count minimum 200 thread count minimum
Appearance Hard wearing Shiny
Feel Natural and light Soft
Price Reasonable Higher

Purchasing criteria

It doesn't matter if you are looking for a pleasant and quality rest or if you are looking for cotton sheets for your business. For all cases, there are certain factors that will help you recognise original cotton sheets based on their main characteristics. These factors are:

Density

This point refers to two things; the number of threads and the thickness of the sheet, therefore, they do not directly influence the quality of the sheet but the weight. Many people believe that the more threads the sheet has, the better it is. However, a 500 thread count sheet may be stiffer and heavier. For this reason all factors should be taken into account at the same time. The truth is that it refers to the number of vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft) threads in a 6.45 cm2 (1 inch) square of fabric.

  • Up to 200 threads. This is the range of threads that an economy sheet has. The quality is actually lower, they tend to shrink in the wash and are very light.
  • 200-400 thread count. sheets with this thread count are a favourite, because they offer softness, do not crease easily, are flexible and therefore have a very elegant appearance and are very durable. Over 400 thread count. The sheet becomes brighter and more durable, but depending on the type of cotton and fabric, we can tell if it is also light or stiff. There are sheets that can exceed 1,000 threads, but they are not necessarily the best quality.

Colour

Although it may seem to be a matter of taste, colour and patterns do affect the quality of the product, both in terms of feel and use, as well as durability. Cotton is naturally white, so a white sheet has fewer treatments than a coloured one, and the process is shorter and more environmentally friendly.

On the other hand, when dyeing the fabric or adding a print, the cotton goes through more chemical processes that can influence aspects such as the thickness of the fabric, it can feel stiffer to the touch and increase its value or last less. However, they are perfect to match any style of modern décor.

Types of cotton

Cotton is a natural fibre used in the manufacture of textiles. It is classified according to where it comes from and the size of the fibre. All are of excellent quality, the difference lies in how tightly or loosely the strands can be woven depending on the type of weave. This will make the sheet shiny or soft.

Indian cotton. This is the short fibre, it is also the most economical. It is used for sheets that have fewer threads. It is also light and does not store moisture.

American cotton. The fibre size is medium. It is a favourite for its softness, natural lustre, ease of ironing and fabric quality. Egyptian cotton. This has a long fibre and is the most expensive of all. It is used for high-end bed linen, is very durable, has a shiny, soft and luxurious look.

Size

A sheet that is too small causes a taut look and false wrinkles in the bed. While one that's too big can give a cluttered look to the room in general. Not only with cotton sheets, but with any type of fabric, it should be slightly larger than the size of the mattress. The recommended sizes are:

Bed Size Top Sheet Sizes Fitted Sheet Sizes
Square 170 x 270cm 105 x 190 cm
One and a half square 190 x 270cm 135 x 190 cm
Two seater 220 x 270cm 240 x 270cm
Queen size 240 x 270cm 180 x 190cm
King size 270x280cm 200×200 cm
