Who can still remember? In the past, in summer. Outside on the street. Bouncy boxes were drawn on the ground with sidewalk chalk. Or at school. When they still wrote on the slate boards with white chalk instead of whiteboards. But this dust, the cleaning of the blackboard and the terrible squeaking when writing. Those are the negative side effects of painting and writing with chalk.

With chalk pens, we no longer have these problems! Chalk pens are the modern form of sidewalk chalk. Due to the liquid mixture of water and chalk inside the lead, they do not stick when applied. What's more, thanks to their solid casing, the crayons are easy to transport and cannot simply crumble.

Summary

  • Chalk pens are versatile. They can be used on blackboards, whiteboards, glass. But they can also be used to write on plastic, vinyl or wood. The result looks even better, especially with lettering, than when writing with normal blackboard chalk.
  • Chalk pens are also suitable for children and people with allergies. As they are easy to wash off, it is no problem to draw over the edge. Due to their liquid texture, they do not create dust like conventional chalk when writing and painting.
  • Chalk pens can be used outdoors without a guilty conscience, as they are free of harmful substances and environmentally friendly. Chalk pens are also popular as sewing utensils. Here they are mainly used for sketching cutting patterns.

The Best Crayon: Our Choices

Chalk pens: buying and evaluation criteria

In order to simplify the selection of chalk pens, we have listed the most important purchase and evaluation criteria for you in the following section. These should also help you to make the right choice.

The buying and evaluation criteria include:

In the following, we go into more detail on the individual points and explain them step by step.

Surfaces

Depending on the use, it should be ensured beforehand for which surface structure the chalk pens are to be used. Most pens can be used on all smooth surfaces. This includes materials such as glass, paper, (slate) boards, whiteboards, but also writing on plastic, vinyl or wood.

If the pens are to be used on wooden materials, the best choice is signing chalk. It can even write on rubber or wet wood. It is water and weather resistant and therefore more suitable for older children or adults.

Washable

Especially if children are to draw with the chalk pencil, it is important to note whether the pencil is easily washable. Most crayons can be removed from clothing and are easily washed off with tap water. A crayon cleaner can help against heavier stains.

Here's an extra tip: It's worth reading the product description or the back of the packaging carefully. There is a difference between "washable with water" and "wipeable". Washable paints can be easily removed from boards or whiteboards with a damp cloth. Washable paints need water and usually a proper brush.

Environmentally friendly

When chalk pens are used outdoors, it is especially important that they are environmentally friendly. In other words, there should be no toxic substances in the chalk fluid. But even marking crayons, or forestry chalk, are environmentally friendly despite their waterproof properties. They are mainly used for marking in forests or on roads.

This type of crayon is made of alabaster, a natural gypsum material, and can be used in nature without hesitation. The crayon's weather resistance comes from the addition of fats and oils, but these are also natural.

Size and shape of the tip

The tips of chalk pens differ not only in size, they also have different shapes. The thickness of the tip ranges from 1 to 15 mm. This means that chalk pens can be used in a variety of ways and are also suitable for fine work. The tip of many chalk pens can be changed very easily. This makes it possible to write and paint with a single pen with a bullet tip and a wedge tip. It is practical that you only have to buy one product.

Especially with a bullet tip, writing is easy and even. The pen does not need to be held particularly well to produce an even stroke. Wedge tips, on the other hand, have a wide and a thin lead side. This means that they can either be used to underline thickly or to write very thinly and finely. However, the fingertip feeling must be a little more precise with pens with a wedge tip than with pens with a bullet tip.

Colours

Crayons are available in all imaginable colours. In addition to the classic primary colours of red, green, blue and yellow, there are even pastel or neon colours. The bright colours are water-based in all pens, except the marking crayons, and are therefore easy to remove.

Crayons: Frequently asked questions answered in detail

To answer even the last questions, this section contains our guide. Here you will find all the important answers at a glance.

What is a chalk pen?

A chalk pen is a pen that is filled with a liquid made of water and chalk. The pen writes with a moist mixture of chalk and water. The advantage over normal street or blackboard chalk is that no dust can form when writing due to the liquid and the chalk pen is therefore also suitable for allergy sufferers and small children.

The chalk leaves behind a very special writing image when it dries. This looks great especially on smooth surfaces. A chalk pen can be used to draw or write.

What types of chalk pens are there?

Chalk pens differ in shape, size, colour and lead thickness. Unlike normal blackboard chalk, chalk pens, like felt-tip pens or ballpoint pens, are in a plastic or wooden casing. This preserves the chalk fluid for a long time. The tip of the pen consists of a felt tip, just like felt tip pens. This makes it easy to dispense the chalk-water mixture.

Chalk pencils are available in many different sizes and the lead thickness ranges from 1 to 15 mm, depending on the intended use. Thicker leads are suitable for painting or writing on facades or the street. Small and thin leads, on the other hand, can be used for writing on glass, whiteboards or even maps.

How much do chalk pens cost?

Depending on the type of pencil, chalk pens can be roughly divided into price categories. You can find the individual categories with the available products in this table:

Price class Available products
Low-priced (3 - 5 €) Mostly single pens in black or white
Medium-priced (5 - 10 €) Chalk pens in sets, in different colours
High-priced (from 10 €) More than 20 pens in a set, incl. metallic colours

So it all depends on what your project is and what you need a chalk pen for. If you just want to write something, a cheap pen for little money might be enough. But if you have a bigger project, it might be worth buying a whole range.

How do I remove a chalk pencil?

You don't need a special chalk pen cleaner to remove chalk pen colours from clothes or the floor. It is often enough to let the paint dry and then brush it out with a dry cloth or rag. However, if the colour is more stubborn, you can simply wash the clothes at 30-40 degrees in the washing machine.

To remove chalk crayons from floors or facades, a scrubber or brush and water are best. If the surface is rough, you can use a simple washing-up liquid.

The most difficult surfaces to clean are made of wood. Here, the first thing to try is a mixture of water and washing-up liquid plus a brush. If the paint still remains on the wood, a liquid made of water, baking soda and vinegar cleaner can be mixed.

What is the difference between chalk and a chalk pencil?

Unlike normal chalk, chalk pens are particularly suitable for small children and people with allergies. Because they are filled with a liquid chalk mixture, they do not create dust when writing or painting and also adhere better to the surface.

Due to their pen shape, chalk pens are easier to hold, especially when writing, and do not soil the hands. Chalk pens are also available in dry form. These can be used especially for sewing work to draw patterns on fabrics.

Conclusion

Chalk pens are a great alternative to regular chalk. Whether they are used for writing on blackboards or whiteboards or for painting on the street. The pen shape makes chalk pens easy to hold in the hand and most importantly: everything stays clean.

That is why chalk pens are especially suitable for children and allergy sufferers. They do not create dust and the chalk fluid dries quickly. Crayons also stand out when it comes to colours. Metallic and pastel colours give the crayons that certain something extra and guarantee great colouring fun!
