The Best Cushion Box: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a cushion box

Is a cushion box suitable for me?

A cushion box is suitable for anyone who wants to bring a little more order into their home garden.

It can often happen that unexpected rain falls on a warm summer night and you forget the cushions on your garden chairs.

The next morning, you are horrified to find that the cushions are completely worn out. A cushion box can save you from this trouble.

They are usually weatherproof and protect your cushions and pillows in all weather conditions.

As a rule, a cushion box can be placed in a space-saving way so that it does not get in the way or take up too much space.

Some models can even be used as additional seating. So if you are looking for a practical addition to your existing garden furniture, a bench with integrated cushion box is perfect for you.

What material is a cushion box made of?

Cushion boxes can be made of a wide variety of materials. However, the most popular materials are:

  • Polyrattan
  • Sheet steel
  • Plastic

In the following, we will introduce you to a few properties of the individual materials.

Material Properties
Polyrattan Polyrattan is produced artificially, but is highly stable and robust and extremely weather-resistant. Polyrattan also requires little effort to care for.
Sheet steel Sheet steel is particularly tough and has an enormous hardness. Despite its enormous resistance, it is very easy to work with.
Plastic Plastic is often comparatively very cheap. However, the stability does not suffer from this.

What does a cushion box cost?

The price of a cushion box depends on factors such as size or material, so there are enormous differences and there is no one price.

The price range starts at around 30€ and ends at around 900€ - it all depends on your ideas.

With a little luck, you can buy a relatively small cushion box made of plastic without protection for as little as €30. However, if you need a larger cushion box and want a different material, the price can quickly skyrocket.

For example, you can pay 200€ for a cushion box made of polyrattan and a size of around 160 x 75 x 95.

Product Price
Plastic from approx. 30€
Polyrattan from approx. 200€
Sheet steel from approx. 300€

What alternatives are there to the cushion box?

If, for whatever reason, a cushion box is not for you, there are wonderful alternatives. The following section provides a rough overview.

  • Tarpaulin: Just like a cushion box, a tarpaulin protects your cushions and pillows from many weather conditions. The tarpaulin is simply placed over the cushions and possibly secured so that it cannot fly away if it is too windy.
  • Support bag: The support bag also offers solid protection for your cushions. It can also be closed with a zip.

Decision: What types of cushion boxes are there and which is the right one for you?

We basically distinguish between two types of cushion boxes:

  • Sheet steel cushion boxes
  • Cushion boxes made of polyrattan
  • Plastic cushion boxes

In the following, we explain the different types and their respective advantages and disadvantages. In this way, we want to help you find the cushion box that is best suited to you.

What distinguishes a cushion box made of sheet steel and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The cushion box made of sheet steel is the most robust variant in every respect. Sheet steel has an incredibly high resistance and is therefore of very high quality.

Sheet steel is also very easy to clean. A damp cloth is sufficient. You rarely need a cleaning agent.

The cushion box is usually very heavy, so you should be clear about where you want to place it from the start. Moving it later could be very inconvenient for you.

  • Robust
  • High resistance
  • High quality
  • Easy to clean
  • Very heavy
  • can rust

However, it can happen that the sheet steel cushion box starts to rust if the steel has not been properly machined. Therefore, you should make sure that the sheet steel has been heated sufficiently.

What distinguishes a cushion box made of polyrattan and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Polyrattan is also extremely weather-resistant, which makes this material perfect for outdoor use. Polyrattan is also comparatively very light yet of high quality.

A damp cloth is sufficient for cleaning. As a rule, you do not need cleaning agents, as dirt cannot adhere so strongly to the surface.

For faster cleaning, you can also use a garden hose without hesitation.

  • Weatherproof
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to clean
  • Large differences in quality
  • Can suffer from too much weathering
  • Disadvantage3

If you want to actively contribute to a more durable cushion box, we recommend that you store the cushion box protected under a roof.

What are the characteristics of a plastic cushion box and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Plastic is the cheapest option in comparison. The cushion box is also very light due to the plastic, which is why it can always be easily moved or - if necessary - transported.

When it comes to cleaning, it can be said that the plastic cushion box is particularly easy to care for. Here, too, a damp cloth or a little water is usually sufficient.

Plastic is also very weather-resistant to a certain degree. However, if the storm gets too big, plastic will be damaged comparatively quickly.

  • Cheap
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to care for
  • Tends to crack and quickly become defective

Due to the thinness of the material, the box also lacks a little stability, which is why it can quickly crack or become defective if handled too roughly.

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate cushion boxes

In the following, we will show you which criteria you can include in your decision to buy a cushion box.

The criteria you can use to compare cushion boxes with each other include:

  • Weatherproof
  • Size
  • Stability
  • Equipment

In the coming sections, we will explain to you what is important in the individual criteria.

Weather resistance

When you buy a cushion box, you probably also want to make sure that you don't have to protect it directly from the smallest drop of rain.

Sheet steel comes out best here. It does not require any special care or preparation and is very robust in all weather conditions. You can therefore leave it in the garden with a clear conscience.

No matter what material your cushion box is made of, you should always make sure that it is protected and covered.

Plastic or polyrattan are also very weatherproof, but require a little more care. As the material can wear down quickly, you will need to clean and prepare these cushion boxes a little more thoroughly at least twice a year.

The size of the cushion box depends on the size of the cushions you want to store.

If you really only want to store small cushions, a cushion box with a capacity of around 400 litres will probably suffice.

Cushion boxes are available in many different sizes. From a volume of 400 litres to 1000 litres, everything is possible. (Image source: / giamba)

If you want to store larger cushions or simply need to accommodate a large number of cushions or pillows, a cushion box with a volume of 1000 litres might also be an option.

If you want your cushion box to last as long as possible, you should pay attention to its stability.

In our opinion, sheet steel is the most stable option. However, this does not mean that polyrattan or plastic are not sufficient for your requirements.

Ultimately, it also depends on how you handle the cushion box. Any material suffers from rough handling.

There are cushion boxes that also function as a bench. This gives you a great 2-in-1 option. These usually come with separate seat cushions so that they are also really cosy.

Other cushion boxes have a soft inner matieral, which protects the contents of the box even more and offers more quality.

A much rarer feature that only a few cushion boxes have are integrated locks. This means that the contents themselves can be protected against theft. These are mainly found on cushion boxes made of sheet steel.
