  • Daybeds are available with different functions. For example, they can be pulled out or have storage space under the bed in the form of drawers or a bed base.
  • A daybed is also suitable for the garden or balcony. There are special materials, such as polyrattan, which are also weatherproof.

The Best Daybed: Our Picks

There are many daybeds with different designs on the market. It is important to pay attention to the quality. We have collected the best daybeds for you and summarised the most important features in a few sentences.

Daybed: Buying and Evaluation Criteria

In order to find a good daybed for you, it is important that you know what is important when buying. The criteria you can use to compare the different daybeds are:

In the following points, we explain what you should look for before buying a daybed.

Whether vintage, classic, modern or natural - there is sure to be a day bed to suit your interior style. The two most popular materials are:

  • Natural wood
  • Metal

Natural wood, such as beech or pine, are particularly robust. These materials are usually sealed with oils or varnishes, sometimes in different colours. When you choose natural wood, you always create a special feel-good ambience within your four walls.

The next variant consists of a metal frame. Here, too, there are different versions, so there is something for every taste. If you like scrollwork, these frames are usually made of handcrafted wrought iron.

Or you can choose the simple elegance of classic, straight-lined iron. Models made of metal have the advantage of appearing more filigree.

Indoor or outdoor

In order to be able to rest perfectly not only within your own four walls, but also on the balcony or in the garden, it is advisable to buy a day bed especially for outdoor use. In addition to comfort, the material also plays an important role. Polyrattan is ideal for outdoor daybeds because it is very weather-resistant. It is also inexpensive and easy to maintain.

You can leave polyrattan outside all year round without any problems.

However, if you do not want to do without wood outdoors, you should make sure that you choose a material that is resistant to a wide range of weather conditions. Bamboo, larch or Douglas fir are particularly suitable for this. For a metal bed frame, you should choose aluminium.

To be able to enjoy your outdoor day bed in the long term, you should protect it from the sun. That way, your favourite piece of furniture will retain its colour and not become brittle. Awnings, sunshades or a tarpaulin are suitable for this purpose.

Daybeds are available in a wide variety of versions and are designed to meet the individual needs of the user. If the daybed also has castors on the underside, you can move it around easily at any time. If your daybed has an extendable lying surface, you can easily expand the piece of furniture into a place for two to sleep.

A good mattress ensures optimal comfort.

With a day bed with a bed base, you always have everything at hand. Pillows and duvet are easily stored during the day and can be quickly removed in the evening to turn the couch into your sleeping space in no time at all.

You can get your day bed with a headboard and footboard or without any backrests at all, depending on what you feel more comfortable with. There are also daybeds with a back and sides. This shape is very reminiscent of a couch.

As with a real bed, the daybed is also available in different sizes. If you need the daybed for a youth room or only as a place to sleep, a bed with 90x200 cm will be sufficient.

In principle, day beds are designed for single persons and are therefore often offered in the dimensions 90x200 cm.

However, if you want to install the day bed in your home and use it for a longer period of time, we would recommend that you choose a 120x200 cm or 140x200 cm bed. However, these special sizes are usually expensive.

If you need room for two, then it should be 180x200. You can look for a daybed that can be extended to this size. Of course, this depends on how much space you have available.

Daybeds: Frequently asked Questions and Answers

Before you buy a daybed, there are naturally a few questions that need to be answered. We have listed and answered the most frequently asked questions below.

What is a daybed?

A daybed is basically a two-in-one product. It combines a sleeping area for the evening with a comfortable couch area for the day. If you search for it on the internet, you will often come across the English term "daybed" or the term "sofa bed".

Day beds differ from the classic bed mainly in their design. Most of the time, you will find an armrest or a backrest on daybeds. This allows for optimal comfort during the day, so that you can really relax on the day bed.

Due to the different features and materials, the right day bed can be found for every style of furnishing.

Due to the two-in-one combination, this special form of furniture is particularly suitable for small flats or small rooms. Many models are also offered with practical storage elements, such as drawers or shelves.

What types of daybeds are there?

If you are looking for a day bed, you will come across three types to choose from. There is a daybed with a pull-out function or one with drawers or storage space and a daybed with a bed base. We have summarised the advantages and disadvantages in the table below.

Day bed Feature advantages disadvantages
Pull-out function overnight accommodation for friends no storage space available
Drawers storage space for small items no space for bed linen
Bed base space for head cushion and duvet only space for bed linen

With a day bed that pulls out, you can at least offer your best friend to sleep over. But in doing so, you still have no storage space ready for a second set of bed linen. This must be stored separately, as a day bed with pull-out function offers no additional storage space.

A day bed with drawers or storage compartments offers plenty of space for small items.

A daybed with drawers or storage compartments offers a lot of space for small things. You can store your books or magazines there that you want to read in the afternoon while having your coffee. Your favourite films are also well stored in the drawers, as is the packet of crisps that goes with them. However, the lack of space for bed linen is a disadvantage here.

If it is important to you to have the head cushion and the duvet ready to hand, then a day bed with a bed base is probably the ideal choice for you. It can be perfectly hidden in the bed base during the day and quickly retrieved in the evening when you are tired. The disadvantage of this variant, as with the day bed with pull-out function, is that there is only room for the bed linen and no other additional storage space is available.

What does a day bed cost?

The price of a day bed depends very much on the material you would like to have.
The more elaborate the workmanship and features are, the more expensive the bed will be.

Solid wood beds, for example made of beech or pine, are usually more expensive than a day bed made of metal. Then it also depends on what features the day bed can offer.

The prices are usually between 100 and 550 euros. For around 300 euros, however, you can get good beds made of beech or other wood, even with an extendable function. In contrast, you can get the popular combination furniture made of metal for as little as 100 euros.

Type price range
Day bed made of wood 200 to 500 euros
Day bed made of metal 100 - 250 euros
Day bed pull-out 300 to 530 euros

These prices are given for the average size 90x200 cm. Special sizes, such as 120x200 or 160x200, cost more. The question is whether these special sizes are absolutely necessary and also how much space you have available.

What alternatives are there to a day bed?

Daybeds are multifunctional pieces of furniture that are mainly used when there is little space in the room. However, there are definitely other options that are worth considering. A sofa bed probably comes closest to the functions of a day bed.

We have given you a brief overview of the possible alternatives in the following table.

  • Sofa bed: A sofa bed also combines the features of sitting and sleeping in one. They are therefore also suitable for small flats.
  • Inflatable bed: Ideal if you need a way to have guests stay overnight. It is inflated either with a pump or electrically and works like an air mattress. Afterwards, it can be folded up and does not take up much space.
  • Foldable bed: Are quickly stowed away, as the frame usually has a very simple folding mechanism. Castors on the frame help with transport. But you can also stow it under your normal bed if it does not rest fully on the floor.
  • Stacking bed: Here, two bed bases are simply stacked on top of each other. Offers the advantage that you only need space in the height, but do not lose space in the width.

Of course, these types of sleeping options also have their advantages. Nevertheless, a day bed is a true multi-talent and can be moved around at will with the castors at the bottom. In addition, alternatives are more suitable for indoor use, whereas a day bed made of rattan can also be used for outdoor use.

How can I build a daybed myself?

There is a plethora of daybeds available in different designs and colours. But sometimes you just don't want to find the right piece of furniture that matches your own ideas. Then you have to reach for the toolbox yourself and get the necessary materials at your favourite DIY store.

To build a daybed yourself, you will of course need space, the necessary tools and craftsmanship. It's best to have a workshop where you can build your daybed. If you use castors, you can move the bed back and forth as you like.

Can I also get a day bed with an ecological, responsible background?

Especially with wooden furniture, it is an advantage to know how the wood was harvested. There is also a certificate for this, which you can use to recognise that the wood comes from sustainably managed forests. Look for the FSC-certified label.

It is important that we protect our forests and that there is no over-management. You can therefore look out for the FSC certificate when buying, which guarantees you sustainable management. (Image source: pixabay / ejaugsburg)

We have listed a few more online shops where you can buy a sustainable daybed. These are:

  • Allnatura
  • Avocadostore
  • Kiez bed

Of course, this is only an excerpt that we have listed here. But these shops are specialised in offering products according to ecological conditions.

With a day bed, you can easily turn your office or guest room into a place to sleep. Especially in small flats, a day bed offers you a great combination option that also saves you money. Because with this piece of furniture you save yourself the purchase of an additional couch.

With numerous features such as drawers and shelves, you also get additional storage space. As a rule, day beds are designed for single persons. However, if you need room for two, a day bed that can be pulled out is a good option. Since daybeds are available in many different designs, you are sure to find the right one for you.
