  • Dog jumpers are super important for your small dog with little fur, especially in winter, as you don't want to start freezing and stay indoors as a result.
  • When choosing the right dog jumper, it is very important that you know your dog and what is good for him. Make sure that the material is not too scratchy and that it also keeps your dog warm.
  • Of course, it would be best to make sure that the dog jumper is more or less water-repellent, so that your little rascal doesn't start to freeze when it snows and you are outside for a longer time.

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a dog jumper

Why does my dog need a dog jumper?

Actually, dogs don't need a dog jumper, do they? This is the crucial question: Why is a dog jumper necessary at all? Dogs don't usually run around with any clothes on, do they?

We humans wear clothes to protect ourselves from the cold in winter and to sweat as little as possible in summer. Dogs have their summer and winter coats, which enable them to withstand the temperatures.

If dogs have too thin a coat - or no undercoat - dog jumpers should be used to keep them warm. (Picture source: / 110134486)

But what if the coat is too thin? Consider types of dogs, such as Chihuahua or small pugs. Their winter coat is obviously not enough to withstand the cold. It's exactly for these types of dogs that we have these great dog jumpers.

Before the little rascal starts shivering, you'd better put a nice warm dog jumper on him. And you wonder what great jumpers there are already on the market or what great knitting patterns there are.

Before the little rascal starts shivering, put a nice dog jumper on him, because you don't want to be cold in winter either, but you still want to be outside.

Do you need a small or a large dog jumper?

The size you need for your ideal dog jumper depends entirely on the size of your dog. You also have to make sure that it actually fits the dog and that the jumper does not interfere in any way with the dog's walking, romping or running.

Often you put the dog on the size that the tag says fits. But don't forget to check whether the dog's running behaviour changes. This must not happen under any circumstances.

The dog should like to wear the dog jumper and perceive it as warming and cosy and not as hindering.

How can you knit the dog jumper yourself?

You can find several knitting patterns on the internet to knit the perfect dog jumper. If you are not yet a knitting expert, make sure that you have a look at the easy instructions first, before you despair and lose interest in the difficult ones. The choice of wool is also crucial.

Does your dog have any allergies? Does he really have almost no fur at all? Then make sure that the wool is extra soft and cosy so that your dog feels comfortable. What you need to know beforehand:

  • Your dog's size and girth
  • Needle size
  • Thickness of the auxiliary needle
  • Wool length

In the rest of this article you will find detailed instructions on how to knit a dog jumper and further links that will give you an even better understanding of the subject.

What alternatives are there to the dog jumper?

The best-known alternative, especially for small dogs, is the classic dog carrier bag. These bags often have a cosy interior so that the dog is particularly comfortable. These bags also have ventilation nets so that fresh air can still get into the bag and the dog does not get any problems. The bag is often very comfortable, so the dog can, for example, travel free of charge on public transport or can simply rest after a longer walk, but is still kept warm.

The same applies to a dog trolley. The carrier bags are also available in all kinds of designs and from a wide range of brands. This means that there is a wide range of prices and you are free to decide which bag suits the dog, the owner and the functionality best.

Another alternative is the dog jacket or coat. The dog jacket is not really very different from the dog jumper, except that it is also weatherproof. Often, the dog jackets even have small reflectors built in, so that your little one can be seen in the dark, especially in the morning. Of course, it's great that the dog stays more or less dry in the rain and you don't have to worry about him catching a cold or getting cold quickly.

A final alternative is the dog shirt. The T-shirt for dogs is less about function and more about the look and coolness of the dog. In this case, you have to ask yourself whether it really makes sense or whether it rather disturbs and hinders the dog. But here too: To each his own.

Decision: What types of dog jumpers are there and which is the right one for you?

If you want to buy a dog jumper, you should pay particular attention to the material so that the dog experiences a cosy and comfortable wearing experience. The following types can be distinguished:

  • Cotton dog jumper
  • Polyester dog jumper

In the following sections, we will go into more detail about the individual types of dog jumpers and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

What distinguishes a cotton dog jumper and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Cotton comes from the cotton plant and grows in the tropics and subtropics. It is considered a very old crop and is considered super natural and pure. People with allergies often only wear clothes and fabrics made of cotton, precisely because it is very anti-allergic and therefore absolutely skin-friendly. And that is exactly what is perfect for your little dog with a very thin coat.

  • Skin-friendly
  • Natural
  • Keeps warm
  • Expensive
  • Not water repellent
  • Requires frequent cleaning

Fabrics are often scratchy and uncomfortable on the skin. And precisely because we humans have more than enough experience with this, we should use the experience and knowledge to protect the dog from such scratchy clothing. So choose fabrics or wool made of cotton so that your dog feels great.

What are the characteristics of a polyester dog jumper and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Polyester is the term for synthetic fabrics, i.e. chemically and artificially produced fabrics. Polyesters are polynomials with ester functions, i.e. purely chemical. Of course, polyester also occurs in nature, but nowhere near in the quantities that we demand nowadays. Many people are allergic to this substance, but many also like it very much. In other words, people are not really unanimous about this material.

  • Cheaper
  • Available in great designs
  • Keeps you warm
  • Skin-friendly
  • Not water-repellent
  • Man-made

That's exactly how your dog will feel, but he can't tell you if he likes it or not. So please make sure that the fabric is not too scratchy and that your dog can tolerate the material. Of course, there are great jumpers made of polyester with glitter inserts, etc., but that will only be of use if your dog accepts the material and does not react allergically to it.

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate dog jumpers:

To find the right dog jumper for your dog, you should pay attention to the following criteria when buying:

  • Size
  • Material
  • Choice of colours
  • Ease of cleaning (machine washable)

The following sections go into more detail on the respective purchase criteria and show what is important when buying.

Within the scope of the purchase criterion "size", you must measure your dog exactly. There are also different sizes of dog jumpers, depending on the dog's body size. We have created a table to show you the exact measurement data in connection with the jumper sizes:

size neck circumference back length chest circumference
XS neck circumference: approx. 28 cm back length: approx. 26 cm chest circumference: approx. 34-40 cm
S neck circumference: approx. 30 cm back length: approx. 32 cm chest circumference: approx. 42-48 cm
M neck circumference: approx. 36 cm back length: approx. 36 cm chest circumference: approx. 48-54 cm
L Neck circumference: approx. 46 cm Back length: approx. 43 cm Chest circumference: approx. 62-72 cm
XL Neck circumference: approx. 50 cm Back length: approx. 47 cm Chest circumference: approx. 68-80 cm
XXL Neck circumference: approx. 64 cm Back length: approx. 59 cm Chest circumference: approx. 82-100 cm

When choosing the material, make sure that your dog likes it. There is no point in buying a nice glittery jumper that is super scratchy and uncomfortable for the dog. Also, hoods on dog jumpers are, in my opinion, just nonsense and amuse the dog owner. The dog has no advantage at all.

So decide for the good of your dog and not for your amusement and fun. At the end of the day, it is still a living being and must not be tortured by such a material or have disadvantages. On the contrary, the dog jumper should keep the little rascal warm. So choose a material like cotton so that it's super comfortable and cosy for your dog and definitely not scratchy.

Colour selection

When it comes to colour, you can go as wild as you like. Just make sure it matches the colour of the coat. Many dog owners tend to buy or knit the pink-red colours for a female dog. Is this not an outdated way of thinking?

Decide for yourself what suits you and your dog best. In the end, the colour doesn't matter to the dog.

Ease of cleaning (machine washable)

Cleaning the dog jumper is of course super important. Because the dog really runs everywhere with the dog jumper and, in the best case, rolls around in it, it is absolutely necessary that you wash the dog jumper regularly.

Dog jumpers should be washed regularly. Therefore, it is an advantage if the dog jumper is machine washable. (Picture source: / 85971544)

You don't want to walk around in a dirty and stinky jumper. When buying a dog jumper, make sure that it can be washed at higher temperatures so that all bacteria are washed out after washing. Of course, it would be ideal if the fabric could also withstand a tumble dryer. From this point of view, it is very easy to wash the dog jumper.

Facts worth knowing about the topic of dog sweaters

How can you knit a dog jumper yourself?

As already mentioned, there are numerous instructions on the internet. Just watch the video on Youtube and try to knit it yourself. You can find more information about knitting your own dog jumper under "Further reading". Have fun and share your results with us.

How do you get your dog used to the dog jumper?

It's actually quite simple. Let your dog sniff the dog jumper first and introduce him to the piece of fabric. You can repeat this a few times or put it in his sleeping place so that your dog really has the dog jumper around him for a longer time. Now try to put his head through the opening of the jumper and see what happens. Reward your dog regularly, perhaps with the help of treats.

If your dog accepts the jumper well, go one step further and put the jumper on him. Do everything slowly and carefully and don't forget to reward your dog regularly. If your dog still has problems with this, take another step back and try it slowly. But through rewarding and repetition, your dog will quickly get used to the jumper.

How can you tell if your dog is allergic to the jumper?

You can tell by the fact that he either starts scratching all the time or that his skin changes. If this happens, please consult a vet quickly. Your dog will certainly not suffer much pain, but it will still itch unpleasantly, just like humans, and we don't want that.
