Double bed: buying and evaluation criteria

In the following, we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the many different double beds. The criteria you can use to compare the beds with each other include:

In the following paragraphs, we will explain what is important in the individual criteria.

Many materials used in the manufacture of double beds can be contaminated with harmful substances. Formaldehyde is often used, which can often happen with cheaper beds. The formaldehyde is used as a stabiliser so that the wood holds well.

However, this can lead to health problems such as asthma or allergies. The mattresses, if they are included in the bed purchase, can also be contaminated with chemical additives.

Each double bed is available in different wood thicknesses. It varies between 10 mm and 30 mm a wood thickness below 30 mm cannot guarantee good stability.

Solid wood beds have high strength and are usually very durable.

The durability of a bed is a very important criterion. If a bed is stable, it will not make creaking noises and it will last longer.

The double bed should always have enough distance to the floor so that the bed can be well ventilated. Therefore, the bed should not be directly on the floor. A lot of dust always accumulates under the bed, so the distance should be large enough so that you can easily get under the bed with a hoover.

There should be at least 40 cm between the floor and the bed. For older people and people who have difficulty getting up, there should be 50 cm.

Double beds come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. From a width of 140 cm, a bed can be called a double bed.

The most common and most widespread size of a double bed is 180x200 cm.

These beds are also called marriage beds.

A double bed is suitable for people who need enough space to fall asleep and move around a lot while sleeping. The bed offers enough space for two adults and there is also enough space for families with children. A double bed requires more space than a queen-size bed, so enough space should be included.

What types of double beds are there?

If you want to buy a double bed, there are two types to choose between: the French double bed and the Japanese futon bed. We have summarised the most important advantages and disadvantages of both types below:

Type Advantages Disadvantages
French double bed suitable for two people, has a continuous mattress, there is a bed gap in the middle it is only 150 cm wide and only 190 cm long,
Japanese futon bed simple,100% natural materials, gentle on the back, space-saving rather hard, high maintenance, very minimalist

The French double bed is also called Grand-Lit and is very well known and a popular bed in Germany. The French bed can be recognised by its continuous bed frame, with only one mattress and one slatted frame.

The main feature of a French bed is the continuous mattress without a middle gap. The shared lying surface reflects the French lifestyle. Couples can lie closer together and cuddle better in such beds.

The futon bed originated in Japan and translates as bed roll. In Japan, a tatami lies under the actual futon mattress. This is a mat made of rice straw, which has an additional heat-regulating effect.

In Germany, a futon bed is the European modified version of the traditional Japanese way of sleeping. The bed combines sleeping close to the floor from Japan with minimalist design and European comfort.

What does a double bed cost?

Double beds are ideal for 2 people and are usually available in the widths listed, but the price also varies depending on the size of the bed.

  • 160 × 200 cm (169€- 900€)
  • 180 × 200 cm (239€-1500€)
  • 200 × 200 cm (289€-2500€)

Double beds require two separate slatted frames and two individual mattresses, which has a significant impact on the price. When buying a double bed, you usually only get the bed frame and the accessories such as mattress and slatted frame have to be bought separately.

The price of a double bed depends strongly on the equipment

This is advantageous for people who already have a slatted frame and only want to renew the bed.

Depending on the materials used, solid wood beds or somewhat cooler-looking metal beds also differ in price. On average, beds made of solid wood are more expensive than metal beds.

What alternatives are there ?

Double beds can be made of many different materials and designs. Each of the models has its own advantages and disadvantages. In the following section, we will give you a brief overview of the alternatives to double beds.

Type Description
Box spring bed these beds are very popular in the American area and in Scandinavia. In Germany, too, beds with box springs are becoming more and more popular. This is not only due to the special design, which appeals to many people visually, but also in terms of health and comfort, the American beds score very well.
Four-poster bed this refers to all types of beds that have a canopy. This is a fabric, usually made of silk, that is stretched over the bed. The fabric is then attached to the top of the bedposts. The fabric panels on the bed store additional warmth in the four-poster bed and shield it from cold draughts. This and the resulting privacy are advantages of the four-poster bed.
Waterbed these beds consist of a frame and a mattress filled with water. The mattresses can become very heavy and need a stable base. Waterbeds offer very good lying and sleeping comfort. The degree of firmness of the mattress can be adjusted individually by regulating the amount of water independently.
Rattan bed these beds are made from rattan palm. It is a natural product and is therefore very popular. In Germany, natural materials are generally preferred.
Rattan beds are very light. The appearance is very special and usually the natural colouring of the material is left in its original state. These beds come in a wide variety of colours. One disadvantage is that they are not so easy to combine with other styles.

Each of the beds has certain advantages that are not to be despised - now everyone has to decide for themselves which type of bed suits them best.

How do I clean the mattress of my double bed?

There are many reasons why you should clean your mattress. Your mattress may contain dust mites, old dander, mould spores and stains. We have described here in the next paragraph exactly how you can clean your mattress at home without any help.

What you need: soft brush, hoover, soft cloth or sponge, 200 g baking soda

Cover: if you have a mattress with a removable cover, you can take it off and wash it in the washing machine and then let it dry in the fresh air.

Mattress: the mattress must first be cleaned of flakes of skin and dirt with a soft brush by brushing the entire mattress.

Cleaning: for this you now need the sodium bicarbonate, which is an agent to freshen up textiles and remove dirt.

  1. Spread the bicarbonate of soda evenly over the mattress
  2. Massage lightly into the fabric with a soft brush
  3. Leave for two to three hours
  4. After the reaction time, you can vacuum up the powder with a hoover.

The salt crystals neutralise odours, have a fungicidal effect and kill germs and bacteria. You can repeat the cleaning every six months.

There are many different types of beds and it takes time to find out about all the different types and shapes. Not only the design, but also the price plays an important role in the purchase decision. Double beds and their alternatives come in a wide range of price categories. The price depends strongly on the size of the bed and the materials used.

Not only the bed itself is important, but also the right combination of slatted frame and mattress. Some manufacturers offer complete sets in which the slatted frame and mattress are included with the purchase of a bed.
