Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a double sleeping bag

Who is a double sleeping bag suitable for?

In principle, a double sleeping bag is suitable for everyone. The double sleeping bag is very popular with families with babies and with people in love. Those who miss the space and comfort of a double bed at home can of course also sleep alone in a couple’s sleeping bag.

For reasons of hygiene, duo sleeping bags are also often taken to hotels. However, you should be aware that a double sleeping bag will never reach the insulation level of a mummy sleeping bag. In the outdoors, you can quickly get too cold with a pair of sleeping bags, especially as a single user.

What temperatures should a double sleeping bag be suitable for?

It is comfortably warm in a duo sleeping bag if it is not below 0°C in the surrounding area. People who are less sensitive to the cold can also use double sleeping bags down to their limits of -5°C.

Temperature designations Winter duo sleeping bag Summer duo sleeping bag
Comfort temperature approx. 0°C approx. 20°C
Limit temperature approx. -5°C approx. 15°C
Extreme temperature approx. -10°C approx. 5°C

As with any other sleeping bag, you should consider the outside temperatures at the place of use. Especially outside or in a tent, it is easy to underestimate the cold. In principle, you should use a double sleeping bag in a warmer environment. It is not recommended for an Arctic trip. Double sleeping bags are ideal in summer or in a caravan.

What material should the double sleeping bag be made of?

The materials for a double sleeping bag can be divided into man-made and natural fibres:

Natural fibres Advantages Disadvantages
Down Keeps warm best. Offers high sleeping comfort Expensive to buy. Less suitable when there is a lot of moisture because down feathers can clump together
Silk Very comfortable on the skin. Fast drying. Allows moisture to escape Expensive to buy. Gentle wash cycle necessary. Hardly insulating
Cotton Keeps warm well. Breathable. Washable Higher weight. Larger pack size
Synthetic fibres Advantages Disadvantages
Polyester Dries very quickly. Less expensive Less breathable. Production from petroleum wastes resources
Polyamide fibres Waterproof. High stretch. Very durable May cause irritation to sensitive skin types.

Cotton or silk give you a very good skin feel and a lot of comfort. Artificial fabrics such as polyester or polyamide fibres, on the other hand, are more resistant, quick-drying and easier to care for. Often several materials are used. Polyester or polyamide fibres for a robust and quick-drying outer lining and silk or cotton on the inside to meet all comfort standards. The insulating filling is either down, cotton or a synthetic fibre. In the higher price ranges, down is used in the majority of cases, while synthetic fibres are used in the lower price range. In principle, every filling of a sleeping bag insulates. The main difference is in the volume and density of the material used. The volume or the amount of filling material used is given in grams per m2 (e.g. 300g/m2). Therefore, the more grams, the better the thermal insulation, apart from the material.

How much does a double sleeping bag cost?

The price range for double sleeping bags is between 40 euros and 250 euros. If you choose an expensive version of a duo sleeping bag, you can look forward to a lot of useful details. Often you can split double sleeping bags and use them as single sleeping bags. Removable inner sheets make cleaning much easier and increase comfort. In higher price ranges, multifunctional materials are often used. Polyester blends are popular as the outer layer and natural fabrics such as silk as the inner lining. This ensures that moisture cannot penetrate so easily, but can escape more easily. Double sleeping bags from the mid-price segment are often not as robust and high-quality as the expensive version. Nevertheless, care is taken to meet important product standards:

  • Zips that don’t let the cold through and don’t get caught anywhere
  • Included pillows and pleasantly processed materials
  • Use of natural fibres such as cotton

Inexpensive models are usually made of 100% polyester or similar synthetic materials, but they do offer comfort. If you use the duo sleeping bag less often, this may well be the right choice for you.

However, low-priced double sleeping bags often do not achieve the same level of thermal insulation as mid-range or high-priced models.

What alternatives are there to a double sleeping bag?

The only way to replace the cosy togetherness of a double sleeping bag is with a conventional blanket. However, you can also achieve a deep sleep with other types of sleeping bags:

Type of sleeping bag Features
Mummy sleeping bag Tight-fitting sleeping bags with hoods
Blanket sleeping bags A type of 360° blanket ideal for indoor use
Bivy sleeping bag A mixture of sleeping bag and tent
Bundeswehr sleeping bags A very robust, weather-resistant and space-saving sleeping bag
Hanging sleeping bags Hammock with integrated sleeping bag, no ground cold and wetness
Baby sleeping bag For the smallest campers, often with sleeves

Decision: What types of double sleeping bags are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, we distinguish between these types of double sleeping bags:

  • Winter Double Sleeping Bag
  • Summer Double Sleeping Bag

In the following, we explain the different types and their respective advantages and disadvantages. We want to help you find the best double sleeping bag for you.

What distinguishes a summer double sleeping bag and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

As the name suggests, summer double sleeping bags are ideal for the summer season. Cotton fibres are often used as filling so that it does not get too warm in the sleeping bag in summer temperatures. Summer double sleeping bags are also popular for use in heated rooms.

Advantages
  • Smaller pack size
  • Costs less
  • Can also be used in heated rooms
Disadvantages
  • Not suitable in cold temperatures
  • Cotton has a long drying time
  • Cotton is not suitable for humid areas

For extremely warm and dry weather conditions or in heated rooms, it is best to use blanket sleeping bags.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a winter sleeping bag for couples?

Unlike a summer sleeping bag, winter sleeping bags are usually lined with down. Goose down ensures optimal thermal insulation.

Advantages
  • Ideal for 0 °Grade
  • In an emergency also usable for too warm environments
  • Down filling gives nice warmth and is very pleasant
Disadvantages
  • Often larger pack size
  • Usually found in higher price ranges
  • Gentle washing for down sleeping bags.

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate double sleeping bags

In the following we will show you which criteria you can use to compare and evaluate double sleeping bags. This will make it easier for you to get an overview and decide on a suitable and effective model. In summary, these are the following criteria:

  • Double sleeping bag size
  • Materials used
  • Thermal insulation
  • Range of alternative uses
  • Weight and form of transport
  • Washing machine suitability

In the following, you can read about the respective criteria and find out why it makes sense for you to purchase a model based on the criteria or not.

Size of the double sleeping bag

For particularly tall people, a rather longer cut duo sleeping bag is the right choice. The dimensions are approximately between:

  • Length 190 cm x width 150 cm
  • Length 220 cm x width 180 cm.

The size of an unzipped double sleeping bag varies only slightly. In width, however, 30 cm more or less can make quite a difference.

Materials used

The important thing here is the value you place on high-quality materials. There are many brands that use different fabrics, which have different properties and are available in different price ranges. The skin feel of silk, for example, cannot replace cotton.

Thermal insulation

Double sleeping bags are available for warm temperatures at around 20°C and for winter at around -5°C, maximum -10°C. In most cases, a sleeping bag will be used for warm temperatures. In most cases, a sleeping bag is probably used for camping and should therefore be able to keep you warm.
Think carefully about the environment you want to use your sleeping bag in and what insulation you need. If in doubt, a more insulated model is the better choice.

Weight and form of transport

The weight of a pair of sleeping bags and how much space they take up should not be neglected. To keep the double sleeping bag as small as possible, simply use the matching compression bag.

Always keep the double sleeping bag away from sharp objects and only use reinforced transport bags.

For long trekking or hiking trips, use lightweight equipment. Double sleeping bags are often heavier than single sleeping bags, although there are of course exceptions from the high-price range.

Range of alternative uses

Sometimes double sleeping bags have more to offer than you think. Some duo sleeping bags can be split and used separately as single sleeping bags. Many also have built-in pockets so you can keep practical items close at hand. There are different styles, those with attached pillows, pull-down headboards or weatherproof outer linings.

Washing machine compatibility

You should make sure that your future sleeping bag will survive washing machines safely. It also saves a lot of time and effort to be able to wash it in a machine at all.

Facts worth knowing about double sleeping bags

How do you care for a double sleeping bag?

Most double sleeping bags can be washed in a washing machine at 30°C. If possible, we recommend using a gentle detergent. However, if possible, we recommend a gentle wash cycle, especially for delicate materials such as down.

Sleeping bags often take a relatively long time to dry, so make sure you allow enough drying time.

Washing too much or the wrong way can also wear down the material. With removable inner sheets, which are much easier to wash, the hygiene is correspondingly better.

In which situations should I use alternatives?

  • In extremely cold weather conditions, you should use a sleeping bag specially designed for this purpose. Double sleeping bags are usually not made for deep sub-zero temperatures.
  • If you want to save space, single sleeping bags may be smaller in pack size.
  • If you are travelling in the tropics and have to watch out for insects and ground dampness, you are better equipped with a hammock sleeping bag.

What can I do if my double sleeping bag is damaged?

Generally, sleeping bags are patched and not sewn. For longer trips, we recommend that you pack a repair kit. Make sure that the glue is suitable for your sleeping bag material so that everything holds well. The patches that are used are often self-adhesive. It is only necessary to make sure that the sleeping bag fabric is stretched and that everything is pressed on without wrinkles.
