  • For your e-cigarette, you need a corresponding liquid. This liquid is available in different flavours and with or without nicotine.
  • The liquid for your e-cigarette is vaporised via the coil, which is heated electrically. You inhale the resulting wet vapour when you take a puff from your electronic cigarette.
  • Liquid for e-cigarettes contains the food additives E 1520 and E 422, i.e. propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine. Other ingredients include water, small amounts of food flavourings and possibly nicotine.

The Best E Cigarette Liquid: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a liquid for e-cigarettes

If nicotine is considered harmful, why is liquid with nicotine offered?

Nicotine is a neurotoxin that is harmful to your health, there is no question about that. But smoking an e-cigarette with a liquid containing nicotine does not produce harmful smoke that can also harm your fellow human beings.

Secondly, such a liquid is considered far less hazardous to health because it does not contain tar and does not release carbon monoxide.

Can I give up smoking with the help of an e-cigarette?

Since your smoking behaviour will change when you use an electronic cigarette, it is definitely possible to give up smoking.

While you usually smoke a conventional cigarette to the end, with an e-cigarette you will only take as many puffs as you feel comfortable with. So when you have reached your nicotine level, you will put the e-cigarette aside again.

If you use a liquid with the ingredient CBD, you can do a lot for your well-being and health at the same time.

Does a liquid containing nicotine really taste like tobacco?

Basically, a liquid for your e-cigarette will never taste the same as the cigarettes you have smoked so far. Even if some liquids bear the name of well-known tobacco brands, you will notice a difference in taste.

Did you know that as early as 1963, the American Herbert A. Gilbert patented the idea of a cigarette without smoke and tobacco?

But it was never introduced to the market. The Chinese Hon Lik invented the first model of an electric cigarette in 2003. This still serves as a model for today's e-cigarettes, with many extensions and modifications.

Many of them simulate the smoky aroma, but in the end you will have to try out for yourself which liquid is right for you and your taste buds.

How can I determine the right amount of nicotine to use in an e-cigarette?

It is important to remember that the amount of nicotine you get from traditional tobacco cigarettes is not the same as the amount of nicotine in the liquid.

Here, the rule of thumb applies: 1 ml of liquid with nicotine corresponds to about 5 to 7 conventional cigarettes in terms of nicotine content. So the higher the nicotine content in your liquid, the higher the pressure on your lungs will be.

The familiar scratchy feeling in your throat will also be stronger. So it depends on how much you want to stimulate the nicotine receptors in your lungs. This pressure on the lungs is called a flash.

For orientation, the following table lists the guideline values according to which you can choose the right liquid with nicotine for you.

However, these values do not refer to electronic cigarettes that produce a lot of vapour. For so-called sub-ohm e-cigarettes, you will only find information on the liquid with the lowest amount of nicotine.

Nicotine content in the liquid suitable for
3 mg per ml of liquid
  • here you will hardly feel a scratch or a flash
  • is especially suitable for those who smoke only occasionally or prefer ultra-light cigarettes
  • is also suitable for e-cigarettes that produce large amounts of vapour
6 mg per ml of liquid
  • here you only feel a slight scratch or flash
  • suitable for those who prefer a light cigarette brand
12 mg per ml of liquid
  • here you will feel a normal scratch or a normal strong flash
  • usually ideal for those who prefer stronger cigarettes with a higher nicotine content
18 mg per ml of liquid
  • the scratching in the throat or the flash are quite high or clearly noticeable here
  • especially suitable for heavy smokers or those who have previously used roll-your-own or plugged cigarettes

But remember: If you use a vaporiser in your e-cigarette, you must use a liquid with a low nicotine content. The lower the resistance, the less nicotine there should be in the liquid.

Where can I use my e-cigarette?

The first question to answer is whether you want to smoke or prefer to vapourise. But in principle, you can use your e-cigarette anywhere where there is no smoking ban.

Even though the low vapour of an electronic cigarette smells much less strong than a normal tobacco cigarette and is not as harmful to your health, the law for the protection of non-smokers also applies here.

If you have a so-called steamer or an e-cigarette with a back vaporiser, you are not necessarily a smoker. However, the relatively large amount of vapour can still be annoying for others.

There is no official vapour ban, as you know it from the smoking ban. Nevertheless, apart from public places where it is prohibited by law anyway, you can only use your e-cigarette where it is allowed.

In this case, an innkeeper or an airline, for example, can always make use of their domiciliary rights and prohibit you from smoking or vaping.

If there is no clear indication for you whether you are allowed to smoke, it is better to ask. This way, you can easily avoid difficulties and, under certain circumstances, still enjoy smoking your e-cigarette.

Decision: What types of e-cigarette liquid are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between four different types of liquid:

  • Backend vaporizer MTL liquids
  • Sub Ohm Liquids
  • Tobacco-Liquid with nicotine
  • Liquid with fruit, menthol or other flavours

In the following, we explain the different types and their respective advantages and disadvantages. In this way, we want to help you find the most suitable e-cigarette liquid for you.

What is Backendampfer MTL liquid and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Backend vaporizer MTL liquid is when you use an e-cigarette that only produces a little vapour. This means that these electronic cigarettes work in the normal ohm range, i.e. with 1.0 ohm or even higher.

  • The liquid afterflow is lower
  • less liquid is consumed
  • only a relatively small amount of vapour is produced
  • At colder temperatures, afterflow problems can occur because the vegetable glycerine is more viscous
  • Too high a proportion of glycerine can cause the vaporiser to glow or even stew at very cool temperatures
  • The proportion of vegetable glycerine must not be higher than 50 percent.

Strictly speaking, you can compare smoking here with a conventional cigarette. You breathe the vapour first into your mouth and then into your lungs. However, since each person can only absorb a limited volume of vapour in the mouth, a much smaller amount of vapour is produced.

What is Sub Ohm Liquid and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

In contrast to the back vaporiser liquids, the vapour of DL e-cigarettes or direct vaporisers does not first take a diversion through your oral cavity.

  • The liquid afterflow is significantly higher
  • The proportion of vegetable glycerine can be much higher here, which also ensures more vapour
  • With the Sub Ohm Liquid you have no problems at colder temperatures.
  • Due to the higher liquid flow, you will consume more sub-ohm liquid more quickly
  • The larger amount of vapour remains longer in the room where you are vaping
  • Possibly more cost-intensive, as more liquid is required

This means that you don't take in the vapour in your mouth first, but inhale it directly into your lungs. This creates much larger amounts of vapour.

What is tobacco liquid with nicotine and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Especially when switching from conventional tobacco cigarettes to the healthier alternative via e-cigarette, it is important to many smokers that the liquid tastes like tobacco. Also, when quitting smoking, it is often a better idea to use such a liquid before trying other variants.

  • Smoking cessation is easier
  • No harmful substances, no odour nuisance
  • Less harmful to health
  • Tobacco liquids cannot fully reproduce the taste of a conventional tobacco cigarette
  • The amount of nicotine must be determined by the smoker
  • Since this cannot be equated with the nicotine content of a tobacco cigarette, testing may be necessary first.

What is a liquid with fruit, menthol or other flavours and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

A liquid that tastes like fruit, menthol or other flavours contains natural and nature-identical additives to achieve this special taste.

  • Personal taste preferences can be enjoyed
  • These liquids can also be put together yourself
  • Even the vapour contains these flavours, which is quite pleasant for fellow human beings
  • Liquid must always be stored correctly
  • If it is stored too cool, the liquid becomes more viscous, which can possibly lead to post-flow problems

Buying criteria: These are the factors you can use to compare and evaluate e-cigarette liquids

In the following, we will show you which criteria you can use to compare and evaluate e-cigarette liquid. This will make it easier for you to get an overview and decide on a suitable and effective product.

In summary, these are the following criteria:

  • Flavour
  • Ingredients
  • Nicotine strength
  • Liquid consumption

In the following, you can read about the respective criteria and find out why it makes sense for you to purchase a product based on the criteria or not.

Of course, there is no question that taste depends largely on your personal preferences. Unless you have been using an e-cigarette for a long time, as a former tobacco user you might prefer the liquid that has these tobacco flavours.

Basically, you will probably have to try out a little bit in terms of taste. There are many different flavours. But with such a large selection, you are sure to find the right liquid for you.

As you already know, all liquids contain vegetable glycerine (VG), propylene glycol (PG), water, flavourings and optionally nicotine.

As far as the flavourings are concerned, it depends on your personal preferences. But as far as the proportion of glycerine and propylene glycol is concerned, it is important for you to know in which mixing ratio they are contained.

Because as a backend vaporizer MTL liquid, the VG content should be somewhat lower. At the very least, however, the mixing ratio between VG and PG must be 50 to 50 percent.

If you want more vapour, you should prefer the special Sub Ohm liquids. The usual mixing ratio for these is usually 70 to 50 percent.

Nicotine strength

In addition to the large selection of nicotine-free liquids, you will of course also find those that contain nicotine. Here, it depends a little on your previous smoking behaviour.

If you have only smoked very light cigarettes or only occasionally, you will need a liquid with a low nicotine content. It is different if you are a heavy smoker or prefer to smoke hand-rolled cigarettes.

If you are using your e-cigarette to make it easier to quit smoking, a lower nicotine content can also be useful. But here, too, it depends on your previous habits.

It may be ideal to gradually lower the nicotine content in order to really fight nicotine addiction.

However, it is important to remember that you cannot compare the nicotine content in an e-liquid with that in conventional tobacco cigarettes.

Maybe you have decided that you don't want to buy your liquid but simply mix it yourself. If so, you need to consider how much nicotine you want and what percentage of flavouring you should add.

In this table you can find out what amounts you need for 100 ml of liquid if you use nicotine shots with 20 mg strength:

flavour percentage 1 mg nicotine 2 mg nicotine 5 mg nicotine 10 mg nicotine
without flavour 95 ml base 0 ml flavour 5 ml nicotine shot 90 ml base 0 ml flavour 10 ml nicotine shot 75 ml Base 0 ml Aroma 25 ml Nicotine shot 50 ml Base 0 ml Aroma 50 ml Nicotine shot
3% 92 ml Base 3 ml Aroma 5 ml Nicotine shot 87 ml Base 3 ml Aroma 10 ml Nicotine shot 72 ml Base 3 ml Aroma 25 ml Nicotine shot 47 ml Base 3 ml Aroma 50 ml Nicotine shot
5 % 90 ml Base 5 ml Aroma 5 ml Nicotine shot 85 ml Base 5 ml Aroma 10 ml Nicotine shot 70 ml Base 5 ml Aroma 25 ml Nicotine shot 45 ml Base 5 ml Aroma 50 ml Nicotine shot
10% 85 ml Base 10 ml Aroma 5 ml Nicotine shot 80 ml Base 10 ml Aroma 10 ml Nicotine shot 65 ml Base 10 ml Aroma 25 ml Nicotine shot 40 ml Base 10 ml Aroma 50 ml Nicotine shot

Liquid consumption

When it comes to liquid consumption, your purchase decision depends on whether you prefer a lot or little vapour. With an e-cigarette with a back vaporiser, you produce less vapour, which is why the consumption of the liquid is also lower.

Proverbial steamers, however, will generally have to take into account a higher consumption of liquid. This is because much more vapour is produced. Here, too, it is important that you know which method or which type you prefer.

Facts worth knowing about e-cigarette liquid

Even though smoking or vaping is much less harmful to your health, the guidelines of the Youth Protection Act also apply here, of course. This means that only persons of legal age are allowed to buy and use an e-cigarette, its accessories and e-liquids.

Smoking an e-cigarette is usually the cheaper alternative. This is because, in contrast to conventional tobacco cigarettes, the costs for enjoyment here are usually much lower.

Many people find it much easier to quit smoking by using e-cigarettes. Due to the fact that there is no combustion in the usual sense, addiction is not possible.

In addition, the withdrawal symptoms that occur when one wants to stop smoking can be significantly reduced by an e-cigarette.

Did you know that in 2016 there were already more than 3.5 million people in Germany who have tried an electric cigarette?

More than 90% of the users are former smokers who are trying to get away from the use of normal tobacco cigarettes.

By the way, a conventional tobacco cigarette burns at several hundred degrees when you smoke. In contrast, the process of vaporisation or nebulisation in an e-cigarette takes place at a maximum of 150 degrees Celsius.

This is also the reason why conventional tobacco use releases so many toxic substances that can also harm your fellow human beings.

By using an e-cigarette, you don't really create waste. Overflowing ashtrays and bad air in closed rooms are a thing of the past.
