Electric stoves have long been a good alternative to the classic wood fireplace. The traditional wood fireplace involves a lot of reworking if it has not been installed in the house or flat from the start. The electric stove is therefore much easier to install and also finds a place in every home.

With our electric stove test 2021, we introduce you to various electric stoves and explain the individual criteria you should pay attention to before buying an electronic fireplace.

The most important facts

  • Modern electric stove are designed in such a way that they look and function very much like a real fireplace. They also impress with their environmentally friendly design.
  • The fire of the electric stove is produced by LED lights or by water vapour and thus provides a relaxed and romantic flair.
  • The electric stove not only looks good, but also gives off heat, so the electric stove is not only nice to look at, but can also be used sensibly. It also eliminates the risk of fire.

The Best Electric Stove: Our Picks

Buying and evaluation criteria for electric stoves

Before you decide on an electric stove, you should pay attention to some criteria. To make this easier for you, we have listed the most important criteria for an electric stove.

The most important criteria that an electric stove should fulfil are:

The entire design of the electric stove is such that you don't have to worry about letting the electric stove out of your sight. Since the flames are electronic, the risk of fire is much lower, if not eliminated.

The thermostat regulates the heat of the electric stove.

However, before buying an electric stove, you should make sure that it has an overheating thermostat or an integrated thermal cut-out. This way you can be sure that the electric stove will not overheat.

Your electric stove should also have a safety glass. Even if no sparks can come out of the electric stove, the electronics of the electric stove must be protected so that external influences cannot cause any damage.

Power consumption

You can usually set the temperature of your electric stove to two different levels of heating ventilation and thus heat your room. The power consumption of an electric heater is usually between 1000 and 2000 watts. However, a higher number of watts also consumes more electricity, and the price of a heating level of 1 kWh is about 0.29 cents per hour.

Be careful here, you should not buy an electric stove just for heating. The electric stove can increase the cost of your electricity consumption by quite a bit.

Dimensions and weight

Electric stoves come in many different sizes and weights. To avoid problems after the purchase, you should make sure in advance that you have a place for the electric stove. You should also ask in advance about the placement and fastening of the electric stove, whether it can be installed on its own or whether you might need help due to its dimensions and/or weight.

All these points should be clarified in advance so that there are no complications after the purchase of the electric stove. Thanks to the many offers of electric stoves, you should find a suitable one for you and your intended space.

Installation options

Before you buy an electric stove, you should consider where you want to place or mount it. If you want to buy an electric stove that can be hung on the wall, you should make sure that the wall is stable enough. While most wall-mounted electric stoves come with a light weight, not every wall is sturdy enough to support a certain amount of weight.

If you decide to buy an electric stove that can be placed on the floor, you should make sure that it is mounted with additional help. Additional mounting, for example on a wall, can ensure that the electric stove cannot slip or tip over when touched.

A point not often mentioned about electric stoves is the noise level. Nevertheless, it plays a major role. In order to heat and distribute the air in the room, the electric stove needs an air blower, which can cause loud and unpleasant noises.

Manufacturers rarely point out the loudness of the electric stove, so you should read the customer reviews when you get the chance. If you want to buy an electric stove in a specialised store, it is sometimes possible to test it on site.

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying an electric stove

In order to answer all possible questions before you buy an electric stove, we have listed the most important questions you should ask yourself.

What is special about an electric stove and what advantages does it offer?

Not everyone has the opportunity to buy a wood-burning fireplace. If you still want to have a cosy ambience in your four walls, you can go for an electric stove. This is not only convincing with its realistic appearance, but also offers additional warmth, just like a fireplace that is fired with wood.

But the electric stove offers much more than a modern design. You don't need a permit for an additional chimney, but can simply plug the electric stove into any socket and off you go.

Another advantage is that you don't have to keep an eye on the electric stove all the time. Since the electric stove runs without a real fire and therefore cannot get too hot, there is no risk of fire. In this case, the annoying dragging, disposal and storage of wood and other materials for burning is completely eliminated.

Make sure that the appliance is switched off and has cooled down.

In addition, cleaning the electric stove is much easier than with a classic wood fireplace. Simply wipe the front panel with a damp cloth.

Another advantage of the electric stove is that in most cases you can switch the flame simulation and the heating ventilation on and off separately. So you can watch the flames in summer without producing additional heat.

What types of electric stoves are there?

In the following, we will introduce you to different types of electric stoves. There are two different types, each of which has advantages and disadvantages.

Electric stove with steam

The deceptively real image of the flames is created by steam. You can individually regulate how high your flames should rise.

  • Flames react to draughts
  • deceptively real flames
  • flame height can be regulated
  • air is humidified and purified by steam
  • Water must be refilled regularly

The water vapour function is the most widespread; it generates water vapour by means of an ultrasound in the water. Xenon/halogen beams illuminate the rising water vapour, creating an image of real rising flames and smoke.

Electric stove with mirror and LED

Two-dimensional flames are created by a prismatic rotating mirror and LED lighting. The more often the light is reflected by the mirror, the more realistic the flames.

  • more energy-saving due to LED
  • lighting can be changed
  • Flames only in 2D
  • dark background is needed

The main point of this method is a mirror. There are several rotating mirror elements on the mirror axis, which is illuminated by the LED lighting. The realistic flame play is created by irregular irradiation of the mirror surface and a multiple refracted light.

For whom is an electric stove suitable?

In principle, an electric stove is suitable for anyone who wants to create a cosy ambience within their own four walls. Electric stove are particularly suitable for public businesses, for flats or houses without a chimney flue or rented flats.

Because of the safety described above, you can also buy an electric stove if there are children in the household. In a catering establishment, the electric stove is also advantageous because it does not have to be under constant surveillance and no wood has to be added.

  • Public businesses: The electric stove is particularly suitable for public businesses such as restaurants. Since the electric stove runs on electricity, the restaurant owner or employees do not have to constantly make sure that the fireplace has enough wood to fire. Thus, there is no need to pay attention to additional fire protection.
  • Families: For families with small children or pets, an electric stove is the perfect alternative to a conventional wood fireplace. Children or pets cannot burn themselves on the fire or the hot glass front.

The electric stove is ideal for rented flats, where in most cases you cannot get permission for a classic wood-burning stove or the requirements for a chimney are not met. If you move house, you can easily take it with you and install it in your new home.

How much electricity does an electric stove consume?

The electricity consumption of an electric stove depends on its main use. If you switch on the electric stove only a few times a year, your electricity consumption will be lower than if you switch on the electric stove every day with heating ventilation. In most cases, you can set the fan heater to two levels, from 1000 watts (1kW) to 2000 watts (2kW).

If you want to use the electric heater without the fan heater, you can do so without feeling guilty about the cost. It will only cost you three to four cents per hour. If you want to run the electric stove with the fan heater, it will be a little more expensive than just running the flames, depending on the heat level.

What does an electric stove cost?

There are no upper limits on the market for electric stoves. However, electric stoves come in all price ranges, so the price of an electric stove can be as low as 40 pounds. A luxury electric stove can also quickly reach a price of 8,000 pounds.

The decisive point here is that the more expensive the electric stove, the more realistic the fire. Unfortunately, you often can't expect this from an electric stove in the lower price range. So it's worth digging a little deeper into your pocket so that you can observe the full play of the flames.

For a deceptively real play of flames, you should plan on an approximate price of 500 pounds.

Where can I place or install an electric stove?

You can install an electric stove almost anywhere, whether in the living room, in a garden shed or in the bedroom. All you need is access to electricity. However, a crucial point should be that you find a safe place to put it or hang it.

If you want to place your electric stove on the floor, you should make sure that it is given extra stability so that it cannot fall over if touched lightly or heavily.

If you have bought an electric stove to hang, you should make sure that the wall on which the electric stove is to be installed is stable enough to support the weight of the electric stove.

You can also have your electric stove installed or install it yourself. If you live in a rented flat, however, you should check with your landlord beforehand to see if he or she will allow the installation. If you live in an owner-occupied house, you can install the electric stove practically anywhere you want and where you like.

What are the alternatives to an electric stove?

Since the electric stove is already an alternative to a conventional wood-burning stove, there are no other real alternatives. Alternatively, you can build your own individual electric stove.

However, you should not have the same expectation of performance when building your own as when you buy an electric stove made by a professional.
