Today we are going to talk about the electric tricycle, a vehicle developed especially for the elderly and people with reduced mobility, but which can be used by any adult.

You can find the electric tricycle in two versions: with or without pedal. Generally, this vehicle is capable of covering a distance of up to 30 km when its battery is full. The maximum speed ranges from 25 to 50 km/h.

Another advantage is that the electric tricycle is a sustainable alternative, as it does not emit pollutants. Are you interested? Then keep reading this article, because we're going to talk about everything you need to know about the electric tricycle.

Summary

  • The electric tricycle with pedal combines the power of pedaling with the thrust of the electric motor. The cool thing about this option is that if your battery runs out, you can use the electric tricycle as a conventional bicycle.
  • You can also find an electric tricycle that works without the need to pedal. This model is specially designed for the elderly, people with disabilities or motor difficulties.
  • The motor of an electric tricycle is formed by three or four batteries of 12 volts and 15 amperes each. The power varies between 350, 800 and 850 watts. These characteristics influence the vehicle's operation.

What is an electric tricycle?

The electric tricycle is a vehicle developed to help people with advanced age, locomotion problems and/or disabilities to move around inside and outside the home on a daily basis.

Although this is the target audience of this means of transportation, the electric tricycle is not restricted to these groups, the vehicle can be used by anyone who is over 18 years old.

The maximum speed of this vehicle is between 25 and 50 km/h, which greatly reduces the risk of accidents. The vehicle also has a speed regulation button, which when activated allows the tricycle to go at a reduced speed.

To accelerate you can use the accelerator, this command is available on the handles, made of rubber for the best comfort of your hands. If the tricycle also has a pedal, you can accelerate the vehicle by pedaling.

The electric tricycle has three or four batteries of 12 volts and 15 amperes each, totalising 36 or 48 volts (they are grouped together). Power varies between 350, 800 or 850 watts. Power consumption is low, only 1.2 kW/h.

It can be charged in any socket, between 4 and 8 hours.

You can recharge the tricycle in any socket, recharging time varies from four to eight hours. With a full battery, the electric tricycle can cover a distance of 25 to 35 km.

As it is a vehicle for adult use, the tyres on the electric tricycle are 20 mm (although some models have a 26 mm front wheel). The fenders are made of steel and the frame of carbon steel.

The tricycle has front and rear brakes (double disc brake). The brakes are controlled by the levers (made of aluminium) that cut off the equipment's electricity when the driver presses the command.

This vehicle weighs between 58 and 63 kg. Some models support people weighing up to 90 kg, others are more resistant and support people weighing 100 to 120 kg and some even support people weighing up to 150 kg.

The electric tricycle is equipped with an LED headlight in the front and two in the rear of the vehicle, which makes it easy and safe to move around with the vehicle at night.

The vehicle is also equipped with a basket, which can be located at the front, back or in both areas of the tricycle. The basket makes it easy to carry your backpack, groceries and other items.

What are the advantages of an electric tricycle?

Driver safety: The electric tricycle is a very safe vehicle, as it not only offers plenty of stability because of the wheel layout, but also has a safe speed control and limit, between 25 and 50 km/h.

But just like any other vehicle, you must use protective equipment, such as a bicycle helmet and seat belt.

Vehicle security: Some models have features that prevent theft of the vehicle, such as removable batteries (you need to open the saddle with a key to remove them) and an alarm that triggers and locks the engine, preventing the tricycle from operating.

Comfort: In this aspect the electric tricycle without pedal stands out, because it has a spacious and comfortable seat, armrest (in some models) and platform for the feet. The pedal-powered model has a wide, soft and comfortable saddle.

Autonomy: The electric tricycle offers mobility and autonomy for adults, seniors and people with reduced mobility. The vehicle is ideal for everyday use, you can ride it indoors, on the street, use it to go to college, work, supermarket, shopping, park etc.

It is ecological: the electric tricycle is powered by batteries and not by fuel, so it does not emit pollutants into the environment. In addition, the battery charges in a period of four to eight hours and offers autonomy to travel up to 35 km.

Advantages
  • Enables the locomotion of elderly and disabled people
  • Ideal for daily use, inside or outside home
  • With a full battery it is possible to travel up to 35 km
  • It is an ecological vehicle, as it does not release pollutants into the environment
  • Two electric tricycle options: with or without pedal
Disadvantages
  • It is a relatively expensive vehicle
  • The electric tricycle without pedal only works if the battery is charged
  • Recharging the battery takes four to eight hours
  • It does not work uphill, only on an incline of up to 15º

Which is the best electric tricycle?

The pedal-less electric tricycle has as its main differential the comfort, because you only need to sit in the chair, support your feet on the support platform and operate the controls from the panel.

Another differential is the reverse gear, an especially useful device to maneuver in places with little mobility such as garages or car parks.

This model also has an alarm activated by remote control, this way, if someone tries to steal the tricycle, it will trigger the alarm and lock the engine, making the theft impossible.

The pedal model has as its main differential the possibility of conventional use, that is, if the battery of your electric tricycle runs out, you can move the vehicle through the pedals.

This model is especially recommended for adults without locomotion problems, as the design and operation are very similar to a bicycle, with the difference that it has a motor.

How much does it cost?

As we mentioned earlier, the electric tricycle is a relatively expensive vehicle. Despite being a high value, the vehicle comes equipped with the battery.

did you know that, generally, the warranty for an electric tricycle is 90 days for the parts and battery, six months for the motor and one year for the frame? But stay tuned, because the warranty system changes from one manufacturer to another

Purchase criteria: Comparative factors for electric tricycle models

The electric tricycle is not a toy, but a means of transport designed for people over 18 (but don't worry, you don't need a driving licence to ride the electric tricycle).

Therefore, before buying yours, evaluate and compare the features, functionalities and possibilities of the models available. Some factors should influence your decision, they are described below:

  • Motor power
  • Maximum speed
  • Charging time
  • Capacity
  • Design
  • Extra Features

We will detail each of the criteria mentioned above so that you are not left with any doubt when buying your electric tricycle.

Motor power

One of the most important features to observe and compare when buying an electric tricycle is the power of the motor. Most models fall into one of these three options:

  • 350 watts with three 12 volt, 15 amp batteries each totaling 36 V.
  • 800 watts with four 12 volt, 15 amp batteries totaling 48 V.
  • 850 watts with four 12 volt, 15 amp batteries making 48 V.

Top speed

The electric tricycle is a vehicle designed to provide safety and stability for the driver and peace of mind for pedestrians, so the maximum speed the vehicle reaches is lower.

However, you can find less and more powerful models in this regard. Some vehicles reach only 25 km/h, others reach 30 to 35 km/h, and some reach 48 km/h. The maximum speed of the reverse gear is up to 15 km/h.

Tip: Remember, the higher the speed, the higher the battery consumption.

Charging time

Since it is an electric vehicle, the battery charge time is a very important buying criterion, don't you agree?! You will find options that charge in a period of 3 to 4 hours while others charge between 6 and 8 hours.

It is worth analysing if the vehicle comes with a charger included and if this accessory works in 110/127 volt, 220 volt or both sockets.

Capacity

When we talk about the capacity of an electric tricycle, we refer to the weight limit that a person can have to enjoy the equipment's performance to the maximum.

Most models support a person of up to 90 kg, others are more flexible and support adults between 100 and 120 kg and the most powerful ones support a person of up to 150 kg.

Extra features

When shopping for an electric tricycle look at all the details of the vehicle. Some models are simpler, while others are equipped with several extra features, such as the ones described below:

  • Reverse gear.
  • Gears (up to three).
  • Alarm with engine blockage.
  • Rear-view mirrors.
  • 26" rim front wheel.
  • Speed indicator.
  • Battery level indicator.
  • Power levels system.
  • Independent suspension system.

Design

Although it does not have any influence on the functionality of an electric tricycle, when choosing one, look at the design of the vehicle. Some are quite similar to a bicycle, while others look like Harley Davidson-style motorbikes.

Regarding the colour, you will only find this vehicle in three colour options: black, white or red (with a variation of cherry red).
