What is electrolyte solution and how does it work?

An electrolyte is a chemical compound that is disassociated into ions. It moves within an electric field. For the human body, the action of electrolytes is vital.

Electrolytes consist of ions, small dissolved charged particles that are responsible for fluid distribution in the body. A distinction is made between positive electrolytes, i.e. cations, sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium and negative electrolytes such as anions, chloride, phosphate and bicarbonate.

The osmotic pressure distributes the entire body fluid. The kidneys retain the electrolytes and thus ensure a sufficient water supply in the body. Excess water is removed, while fluid added from outside is distributed.

An electrolyte solution is helpful when the kidneys can no longer regulate the fluid balance themselves and an imbalance occurs. Dehydration is the loss of fluid.

In the body, this happens when the body is strained, for example through physical activity or illness. Diarrhoea, heavy sweating, sunburns and kidney failure can lead to this.

Powder

According to the manufacturer, powders offer the advantage that they dissolve in water much more quickly than conventional tablets. Compared to ready-to-drink drinks, powders can be used to prepare exact amounts of electrolytes and can be individually adjusted. They are available in many different flavours.

Can electrolyte solution be used for animals?

Electrolytes can be used for animals. However, you should be careful to adjust the dosage to your animal and its condition. If there are any health problems or uncertainties, you should always contact your veterinarian.

Dogs are natural athletes and they constantly regulate their body temperature when they use energy to prevent overheating. This regulation is mainly done by panting, which not only removes heat but also loses fluids. (5)

How should electrolyte solution be dosed?

For the dosage of your electrolyte solution, you should follow the instructions of the individual manufacturers or consult your doctor. It is very important not to overdo the dosage to prevent side effects such as nausea.(10)

In animals, electrolytes are usually given intravenously as a continuous drip. Rarely, it is given subcutaneously, i.e. injected under the skin. The dosage depends on the fluid requirement and the condition of the animal.(6)

What can I mix electrolyte solution with?

Electrolytes are mixed with boiled water or still mineral water. You must pay close attention to the dosage prescribed for each product.

You should not experiment with ingredients, because the pre-mixed drinks or prepared powders have already been optimally adjusted. They are supplements that do not require any other ingredients.

Can I make my own electrolyte solution?

Especially if you want to mix your own electrolyte solution, you have to pay attention to the correct quantities. The ingredients for a simple electrolyte solution are still mineral water or boiled water and table salt. The ratio is one teaspoon of salt to one litre of water.

You can enrich the drink with other ingredients, such as banana, orange juice, cane sugar, dextrose or honey. This makes the electrolyte solution more pleasant for the palate and contains more useful elements.(7)
