Ingredients

Liposomal eye spray is often sold for the treatment of dry eyes. The reason for using liposomal eye sprays is firstly that the person concerned probably has a disorder of the lipid layer, which can trigger the dry eyes.

For this reason, the eye sprays are made from a lipid base. Soy lecithin is often used for this purpose, as this is a plant-based active ingredient that naturally counteracts evaporation in the eye area.

To moisturise dry eyes, the film binder hyaluronic acid is also often used. However, this is more often used in eye drops than in eye sprays. However, liposomal eye sprays with hyaluronic acid are also sold.

Phospholipids are also commonly used as a liposomal eye spray. Often this is combined with euphrasia in its composition. This is also used for burning, itching and reddened eyes.

Many affected people use eye sprays with euphrasia when they suffer from pollen allergy. However, it can also be used for dry eyelids.

Application

Eye sprays are sprayed onto the closed eyelids from a distance of about 10 to 20 cm. In doing so, the important particles pass from the eyelids over the surface of the eye, where they can eventually protect the eye from evaporation.

What is eye spray and how does it work?

An eye spray is a spray that is used to soothe, protect and care for disturbed eye sensitivities. Affected people turn to eye spray for symptoms such as dry, burning and itchy eyes.

The eye spray is sprayed onto the closed eyelids, whereby the lipid-containing particles can stabilise the lipid layer of the tear film and thus have a moisturising, protective and refreshing effect. (1)

Moisturising for dry eyes

Affected people often suffer from dry eyes, which are manifested by feelings of tension or foreign bodies as well as itchy eyes.

By using eye spray, the eye can be moistened indirectly. Indirectly, because by spraying the lipid particles from the edges of the eyelids reach the surface of the eye and distribute themselves there.

The liopsomal eye spray thus stabilises the lipid layer of the tear film and ultimately protects the eyes from evaporation. (2)

Refreshing for tired eyes

When and for whom is the use of eye spray useful?

Eye spray is suitable for people who suffer from burning, itching, irritated as well as dry eyes. Especially recommended for people who suffer from Meibomian gland dysfunction.

This is a common cause of dry eye because when the meibomian gland malfunctions, the lipid layer is damaged, which eventually dries out the eye.

Since liposomal eye sprays are made of liposomes, which stabilise the lipid layer of the tear film and thus prevent the eye from drying out, they are very helpful in Meimbomian gland dysfunction. (3)

What types of eye sprays are there?

There are no clear types of eye sprays, as they are almost the same in their effect. (5) However, they differ in the main ingredient used. Most eye sprays are made of liposomes, which are produced from soy lecithin or phospholipids.

There are also a few eye sprays whose main ingredient is hyaluronic acid, as is the case with many eye drops.

Three types of eye sprays are described below: Eye spray with soy lecithin, with hyaluronic acid and with phospholipids as the main ingredient.

Eye spray with hyaluronic acid

This type of eye spray does not contain a lipid-based ingredient like the other eye sprays, but the film binder hyaluronic acid. The film binder used binds the tear fluid and thus improves the moisturisation of the eye. (5)

Hyaluronic acid is more commonly used as an important ingredient in eye drops and is rarely used in the composition of eye sprays.

Eye spray with hyaluronic acid can be used for mild irritation of the eyes. Since this type of eye spray is not made with soy lecithin, it is well suited for people who are allergic to soy.

According to the package leaflet, the eye sprays with hyaluronic acid do not have any general side effects.

Eye spray with soy lecithin

Natural lipids are often used in the lipid-containing production of eye sprays. For example, most lipid-containing eye sprays consist of the main ingredient soy lecithin. Sodium chloride is often used as an additional ingredient.

The eye sprays with soy lecithin often differ only in the addition of other ingredients such as vitamin A or E.

This type of eye spray can be used for itchy, burning eyes as well as for contact lens wearers. According to the package insert, temporary irritation may occur after use.

Eye spray with phospholipids

This type of eye spray can also be used for irritated eyes and by contact lens wearers. The difference in this type also lies in the production of the eye spray. It mainly consists of the main active ingredient phospholipids and soy lecithin.

Unlike the other types of eye spray, sodium chloride is not used as an additional ingredient here, but euphrasia (eyebright) is often used. Euphrasia has an anti-inflammatory effect on conjunctivitis. (6, 7)

According to the package leaflet, there should also be no known side effects when using this product.

How should eye spray be dosed?

In order to treat the symptoms, the eye spray can be used three to four times a day. One to two sprays on the eyelids should be enough to achieve the desired effect.

For more severe conditions, the eye spray can also be used more often than the amount mentioned. (8)

What are the alternatives to eye sprays?

Eye drops are used as an alternative to eye sprays. These are also used to moisturise, protect and care for the eyes when they are dry, burning or itchy.

However, the application is different. While the eye spray is sprayed onto the closed eyelids, the eye drops are dripped directly into the open eye.

In the case of dry eyes, the eye drops offer immediate and more intensive moistening of the eyes, as they are administered directly into the eyes. (8)

On the other hand, they are more difficult and unpleasant to use for many people. In addition, the eye spray can be applied without contact, which makes it easier to use on the go and does not smudge make-up. (2)

What side effects can eye sprays have?

There are no known general side effects when using eye sprays.

However, there are some opinions that differ regarding the effects of eye sprays. For some people, the use of eye sprays does not deliver the promised effect, but only intensifies it at the moment of spraying or does not improve the current condition at all.

Such reactions during use may be due to the fact that the persons concerned may not tolerate an active ingredient used. Thus, when buying, attention should be paid to the ingredients so that no allergic reaction is experienced. (9)

Why are preservative-free eye sprays important?

Preservatives are a very controversial issue with eye sprays. After all, they help kill germs and protect against infections. On the other hand, they can also irritate the conjunctiva and cornea and also damage them in the long run.

There are also preservatives that disrupt the stability of the greasy film, leading to further dry, irritated eyes.

It is not absolutely necessary for eye sprays to contain preservatives, as the development of germs is considered a very low risk.

However, the disadvantage with eye sprays without preservatives is that the spray should be used up within the specified time frame after opening. (10)
