Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a fat burner
What are fat burners?
They can therefore help you to lose fat. The trendy miracle products work with different active ingredients. Even though fat burners help you lose weight, they are no substitute for exercise or a balanced and healthy diet.
What are the advantages of fat burners over a normal diet?
The following aspects speak in favour of taking fat burners:
- More concentrated active ingredients than in food
- Easy to dose
- Easy to use in everyday life
Most of the active ingredients are only found in very small quantities in food. This means that you would have to drink, for example, two litres of green tea a day in order to benefit from the fat-burning effect that helps you lose weight.
Some of the substances are also very rarely found in food. Taking fat burners is a great way for you to maximise fat burning in your daily life. It is a convenient alternative and can be adapted to your lifestyle.
Who are fat burners for?
- Competitive athletes
- People who want to lose weight and reduce fat
- People who want to support their diet and fitness programme
Basically, it should be noted that fat burners accelerate fat burning, but can in no way replace a healthy lifestyle. You should not stop your running, fitness, punching bag or other training because of this.
What requirements should I meet in order to take fat burners?
- Of age
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding
Depending on the type of fat burner, it is not recommended for certain underlying diseases. If you still want to take a fat burner, we recommend that you consult your doctor.
What form do fat burners take?
The following table shows you in which form you can take certain fat burners.
|Powder||Most pure active ingredients, based on amino acids, are available as powders.|
|Capsules||Green tea extract, for example, is usually sold as enteric-coated capsules.|
|Tablets||Fat burners in tablet form, unlike capsules, do not have an enteric coating.|
The form can vary from product to product. However, the form in which the fat burner is taken is often not a decisive criterion that you should take into account when buying a fat burner.
How do fat burners work?
We recommend that you always follow the recommended dosage. Overconsumption of fat burners can be detrimental to your health. It is also advisable to check with your doctor before taking fat burners.
Fat contains important nutrients that your body needs to build hormones and cell walls. Fat also provides us with the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, as well as essential fatty acids.
At 9 kcal per gram, fat also gives us twice as much energy as carbohydrates and proteins
Decision: What types of fat burners are there and which one is right for you?
There are both natural and synthetically produced fat burners. Synthetically produced fat burners in particular should be taken with caution. We recommend that you check with your doctor before taking them.
Fat burners can generally be divided into four categories:
- Thyroid Regulator
- Fat Blocker
- Appetite suppressant
Each of the fat burners works in your body in a different way and therefore brings different advantages and disadvantages. Basically, fat burners are not too expensive, they are definitely cheaper in terms of price than if you buy a vibration plate, for example, to help you lose weight. However, each method has its advantages and disadvantages.
To help you choose the right fat burner for you, we'll introduce you to the different ways fat burners work below. We will help you find out which fat burner is best for you.
What are the characteristics of thermal fat burners and what are their advantages and disadvantages?
Thermo fat burners are preparations that stimulate thermogenesis in the body. Thermogenesis describes the formation of heat induced by the body's own metabolism. The body temperature is increased by taking the thermo fat burner and the fat metabolism is accelerated. This leads to you consuming more calories even at rest.
The best-known active ingredients approved in Germany in the area of Thermo-Fatburners are:
- Green tea extract
In the following, we will go into more detail about the respective Thermo Fat Burners and briefly explain how they work.
Caffeine is a natural substance found in coffee, guarana and tea drinks. In the body, caffeine leads to an increased breakdown of glycogen. This is triggered by the increased energy demand. (1)
Treatment with caffeine increases adrenaline, fatty acids, lactate and noradrenaline at different times and also leads to insulin resistance after training. (2)
In addition, caffeine can reduce insulin sensitivity in healthy people. (3)
Green tea extract
Green tea extract is obtained from the leaves of green tea. Unlike black tea, the leaves are not fermented and therefore contain more ingredients.
Besides the numerous antioxidants that strengthen the immune system, the extract also stimulates the metabolism and has been proven to reduce body weight. (4)
Capsaicin is a substance that occurs in varying concentrations in chilli varieties. The spicier the chilli, the higher the capsaicin content. The main ingredient of chilli peppers increases the heat stimulus in the body and thus stimulates the fat metabolism in the body.
Thermogenic fat burners are often based on active ingredients with a purely natural basis. They not only increase fat burning in the body, but also reduce appetite. Many of the thermogenic fat burners work with a mix of the previously mentioned active ingredients.
However, they are not suitable for you if you already have underlying heart disease. There is a risk that the fat burners will increase your heart rate and blood pressure.
Thermogenic fat burners can increase physical performance, concentration and alertness.
What distinguishes thyroid regulators and what are their advantages and disadvantages?
Thyroid regulators work in a similar way to thermogenic fat burners. The only difference is that they work through the thyroid gland. When taken, the thyroid gland releases hormones that stimulate fat metabolism in the body.
This causes you to lose weight due to increased energy consumption. The two most important active ingredients are L-tyrosine and DL-phenylalanine.
The most commonly used thyroid-activating ingredient is L-tyrosine. L-tyrosine is an amino acid that is also found as a protein building block in many types of cheese.
The thyroid hormone thyroxine is produced in the body through iodination and other reactions. This hormone stimulates the body's metabolism. L-tyrosine has a mood-lifting effect and leads to the release of happiness hormones.
DL-phenylalanine is an essential amino acid and the precursor of tyrosine. It is also converted in the body to the thyroid hormone thyroxine. Just like L-tyrosine, the amino acid has mood-lifting effects and can also be used as a pain relief agent when taken regularly. It also inhibits your feeling of hunger.
We recommend the active ingredients L-tyrosine and DL-phenylalanine if you do not have thyroid problems. They are almost harmless to take because they are only amino acids with very few side effects.
In most cases, there must be a severe overdose for side effects to occur. Due to their mood-lifting effect, these substances are also called anti-depressants among dietary supplements.
What are the characteristics of fat blockers and what are their advantages and disadvantages?
Fat blockers, as the name suggests, prevent the fats absorbed through food from being stored by the body. This means that significantly fewer dietary fats are stored in your body. The most important active ingredients in fat blockers are HCA (hydroxy citric acid), orlistat and chitosan.
HCA (hydroxy citric acid)
HCA is a citric acid that inhibits the storage of fat in the body. Sugar molecules broken down in the body are usually converted to fat tissue if they are not used up. HCA prevents this fat storage from occurring. It also reduces your appetite.
Like HCA, orlistat reduces the absorption of fat from food. Orlistat can reduce fat absorption by up to 30 percent.
Chitosan is extracted from the shell of crabs and similar marine animals. Chitosan binds fats and ensures that they are excreted undigested.
Fat blockers are only recommended for people who are very overweight and want to lose weight. Experts often advise taking them if you have a body mass index of over 28.
Many of the vitamins we take in through food are fat-soluble. Taking fat blockers can therefore lead to various vitamin deficiencies. Since fat blockers affect the digestion of fat, gastrointestinal problems can occur.
What are the characteristics of appetite suppressants and what are their advantages and disadvantages?
Appetite suppressants work in different ways. Firstly, they swell up in the stomach and give you the feeling of satiety. This reduces your feeling of hunger and you automatically eat less.
On the other hand, they can also suppress your feeling of hunger. Many of the fat burners mentioned above and their active ingredients help to suppress your appetite. Therefore, many of the fat burners fall into more than one category.
The most important appetite suppressants are the following active ingredients:
- Green Tea Extract
We have already presented how caffeine, green tea extract and capsaicin work in the body in the Thermo Fat Burner section. Therefore, we will only discuss the ingredients peppermint, hoodia and glucomannan here.
Peppermint curbs emerging cravings. Its fresh taste inhibits your appetite and also stimulates fat digestion in the body.
Hoodia gordonii is a plant species that is said to have an appetite suppressing effect. In the diet industry, Hoodia is increasingly used as an appetite suppressant. This is due to the active substance P57, which only occurs in this plant species.
The active ingredient glucomannan is extracted from the konjac root. The appetite suppressant is increasingly used in supplementation. On contact with liquid in the stomach, the water-soluble dietary fibre swells to up to fifty times its original size.
This extreme swelling capacity keeps you satiated for a long time. Besides, dietary fibre is good for your health. It ensures good gastrointestinal flora and is good for your cardiovascular system.
Unlike thermo-fat burners and thyroid regulators, appetite suppressants influence far fewer processes in your body. As a result, there are usually very few side effects with these appetite suppressants. The swelling agents, however, can lead to gastrointestinal complaints.
Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate fat burners
In the following, we would like to introduce you to the different factors that you can use to compare and evaluate fat burners. This should make it easier for you to decide which fat burner is suitable for you.
Here you will find an overview of the relevant criteria:
- Net weight
- Number of pieces
- Dosage form
- Recommended dosage
- Country of origin
- Important fat burner ingredients
In the following sections, the individual factors are presented one after the other. We will also explain how you can classify the purchase criteria for yourself.
The net weight gives you information about how much pure product weight is provided by the manufacturer.
Often manufacturers only give a total weight, which includes the weight of the packaging. We therefore recommend that you look specifically at the net weight. With the information on the net weight, you can also better estimate the price-performance ratio.
Number of pieces
The number of pieces tells you how many individual pills, tablets or capsules are contained in the package. Depending on the recommended intake given by the manufacturer, you can estimate the period of time over which you can use the fat burner.
This is especially important if you want to use the fat burner to support a temporary diet.
Depending on where in the body the active ingredient is to be used, fat burners have different dosage forms.
Generally, the following different dosage forms are offered:
In the case of tablets, the active ingredient is absorbed in the stomach or intestines. Tablets often consist not only of the active ingredients, but also of excipients to facilitate breakdown in the body. Lactose (milk sugar) is used most frequently.
When taking tablets, we recommend that you drink plenty of water and keep your upper body upright. You should never take tablets with milk, juices or alcohol. This can lead to undesirable interactions which, in the worst case, can harm your body.
Capsules consist of a capsule shell and an active ingredient that is already contained in powder form.
In many cases, the capsule shell consists of animal protein such as gelatine. Nowadays, however, more and more shells made of vegetable substances such as cellulose are being used to make it possible for vegetarians or vegans to take the capsules.
The capsule shells are also often differently coloured. This can be purely an identification mark of the manufacturer, otherwise the colouring serves to protect against light irradiation.
Basically, the difference between a capsule and a tablet is not great. In some cases, the disintegration of a capsule can take longer than that of a tablet.
This is because the shell has to be dissolved by your body first. Tablets that only disintegrate in the small intestine are very easy on the stomach.
Like the tablet, the capsule should be taken with plenty of water. Due to the smooth shell, a capsule is usually easier to swallow than a tablet.
In a few cases, fat burners are offered as a powder. You have to dose the powder and dissolve it in a certain amount of water. The transport of powders is therefore somewhat more complicated than with pre-dosed capsules or tablets.
Due to the larger surface area of the powder, your body can process the active ingredient more quickly. The difference to a tablet or capsule is very small, however, the aggressive acids in the stomach can partially destroy the active ingredients. For taste, it is often more pleasant to swallow a tablet or capsule.
You can use the recommended dosage to get the right amount of fat burner. The recommended dosage for fat burners is two to three times a day.
If, on the other hand, the manufacturer communicates a dosage recommendation that significantly exceeds this value, you should check with your family doctor or pharmacist to be sure.
Most fat burners are taken both in the morning and at lunchtime before meals. Many fat burners contain caffeine and other performance-enhancing substances. Therefore, they are excellent workout boosters.
The active ingredient ephedrine is extracted from the plant Ephedra sinica and was traditionally used as a remedy for asthma, hay fever and colds. However, ephedrine can also be produced synthetically and is usually consumed in tablet or capsule form.
Ephedrine is used as a doping agent because it releases adrenaline, causing increased fat release, thermogenesis, apetite inhibition and metabolic stimulation.
Country of origin
By knowing the country of origin of a fat burner, you can assess the potential risks of taking the product. In Germany, fat burners fall into the category of food supplements.
Unlike medicines, there is no obligation to obtain a marketing authorisation. German manufacturers only have to register the products and are then responsible for the compatibility of the food supplement.
In Germany, the food authority takes on the task of monitoring these products, in accordance with the food standards on which Germany is based.
However, the risks are greater with products from abroad, as these are not necessarily subject to the food standards or the German legal situation. Therefore, other ingredients may be added, the addition of which would be prohibited in other countries.
We advise you not to buy fat burners that are not manufactured in the EU.
Important fat burner ingredients
As you have already learned, there are different active ingredients used in different fat burners.
We have already discussed some of the active ingredients in the section "Decision: Which different fat burners are there and which one is right for you?". Fat burners do not always contain only active ingredients that can help burn fat.
You can check the list of ingredients to see exactly which substances are present and in what concentration. Often, fat burners contain vitamins or other fillers that are not important for your fat metabolism.
If a fat burner contains caffeine, it can increase your performance. However, high doses of caffeine can also lead to insomnia, heart palpitations or restlessness.
You may need to give up your daily cups of coffee or tea if you are taking a fat burner with caffeine.
Fat burners containing caffeine should not be taken in the late afternoon or evening. This could lead to sleep problems.
More and more people suffer from gluten sensitivity or gluten intolerance. Those affected sometimes cannot tolerate wheat-typical gluten at all. If you have an intolerance, you should pay close attention to the ingredients of the fat burner.
Unfortunately, not all fat burners are clearly labelled as gluten-free. If you are unsure, it always helps to contact the manufacturer personally.
Lactose is the sugar found in dairy products. Many people suffer from lactose intolerance. In Germany, for example, about 15 percent of the population suffers from lactose intolerance.
If you are also one of those people who cannot tolerate lactose, you should also look out for this criterion.
Aspartame is a sweetener that is found in many diet products or light drinks because of its low-calorie properties. A harmful effect of aspartame on health has not yet been clearly proven.
However, it is assumed that taking large amounts of the sweetener can be harmful to your health. We therefore recommend that you avoid fat burners with aspartame and look for the label "aspartame-free".
Many fat burners contain active substances and ingredients from animal sources. The contents label often does not provide complete information on whether these contents are active ingredients of animal origin.
With these ingredients you can assume that the product contains animal substances:
These ingredients are only a small selection of substances that are not suitable for vegetarians. We recommend that you look for the label "suitable for vegetarians" or "purely vegetable".
The slogan "purely natural" can be misleading and does not exclude that the product does not contain animal ingredients.
Vegans do not use any substances of animal origin. If you live vegan, you should look for signal words such as "purely vegetable" in addition to the "vegan" label.
You will find numerous animal ingredients under the heading "Vegetarian" that you should not consume if you are looking for vegan fat burner products.
Here is a brief overview of non-vegan ingredients:
- Egg protein
- Milk protein
- Lactic acid
- Nucleic acid
Facts worth knowing about fat burners
How does fat burning work in the body?
Metabolism is the basis of fat burning in the body. It ensures that the nutrients supplied to the body are converted into the body's own substances.
Fat digestion is one of the many sub-processes that take place in our metabolism. It is part of the fat metabolism and ensures that fatty acid is produced, which is then available to the body for energy consumption.
The body needs this energy supply even at rest to keep the cells in the body alive. With increasing activity, the energy consumption in your body also increases. However, if the energy provided is not used, it is deposited in the fatty tissue.
This unwanted and excess fat is stored because it cannot be burned immediately by our body. The body sees this fat as an energy supplier of inferior quality. For this reason, it always resorts to recently supplied energy through food first. This makes it so difficult for us to get rid of the stored fat.
To lose weight successfully in the long term, it is therefore not enough to rely on the effect of fat burners. It is necessary to deal intensively with one's own weak points as well as with the topic of nutrition.
However, the body's metabolism does not depend on energy intake alone. Hormones play an important role in how efficiently fat is burned. Numerous additives are needed for this. These are produced by the body itself in the thyroid gland, for example.
The production of hormones is influenced by the food that is fed to your body. Proteins, for example, can promote the production, while sugar can slow down the breakdown of fat.
What fat burner foods are there?
Fat burner foods are an optimal choice for losing weight effectively. They are usually characterised by their low calories and special nutrients.
They can not only support fat digestion, but also make you feel full for a long time and inhibit your appetite. We have compiled a list of the best foods for fat loss:
- Green tea
- Hot spices: Chilli, ginger, pepper
