Thermo fat burners are preparations that stimulate thermogenesis in the body. Thermogenesis describes the formation of heat induced by the body's own metabolism. The body temperature is increased by taking the thermo fat burner and the fat metabolism is accelerated. This leads to you consuming more calories even at rest.

The best-known active ingredients approved in Germany in the area of Thermo-Fatburners are:

Caffeine

Caffeine is a natural substance found in coffee, guarana and tea drinks. In the body, caffeine leads to an increased breakdown of glycogen. This is triggered by the increased energy demand. (1)

L-tyrosine

The thyroid hormone thyroxine is produced in the body through iodination and other reactions. This hormone stimulates the body's metabolism. L-tyrosine has a mood-lifting effect and leads to the release of happiness hormones.

DL-phenylalanine

DL-phenylalanine is an essential amino acid and the precursor of tyrosine. It is also converted in the body to the thyroid hormone thyroxine. Just like L-tyrosine, the amino acid has mood-lifting effects and can also be used as a pain relief agent when taken regularly. It also inhibits your feeling of hunger.

Fat blockers, as the name suggests, prevent the fats absorbed through food from being stored by the body. This means that significantly fewer dietary fats are stored in your body. The most important active ingredients in fat blockers are HCA (hydroxy citric acid), orlistat and chitosan.

HCA (hydroxy citric acid)

HCA is a citric acid that inhibits the storage of fat in the body. Sugar molecules broken down in the body are usually converted to fat tissue if they are not used up. HCA prevents this fat storage from occurring. It also reduces your appetite.

Orlistat

Like HCA, orlistat reduces the absorption of fat from food. Orlistat can reduce fat absorption by up to 30 percent.

Chitosan

Chitosan is extracted from the shell of crabs and similar marine animals. Chitosan binds fats and ensures that they are excreted undigested.

Glucomannan

The active ingredient glucomannan is extracted from the konjac root. The appetite suppressant is increasingly used in supplementation. On contact with liquid in the stomach, the water-soluble dietary fibre swells to up to fifty times its original size.

Net weight

The net weight gives you information about how much pure product weight is provided by the manufacturer.

Often manufacturers only give a total weight, which includes the weight of the packaging. We therefore recommend that you look specifically at the net weight. With the information on the net weight, you can also better estimate the price-performance ratio.

Number of pieces

The number of pieces tells you how many individual pills, tablets or capsules are contained in the package. Depending on the recommended intake given by the manufacturer, you can estimate the period of time over which you can use the fat burner.

This is especially important if you want to use the fat burner to support a temporary diet.

Dosage form

Depending on where in the body the active ingredient is to be used, fat burners have different dosage forms.

Generally, the following different dosage forms are offered:

  • Tablets
  • Capsules
  • Powder

In the case of tablets, the active ingredient is absorbed in the stomach or intestines. Tablets often consist not only of the active ingredients, but also of excipients to facilitate breakdown in the body. Lactose (milk sugar) is used most frequently.

When taking tablets, we recommend that you drink plenty of water and keep your upper body upright. You should never take tablets with milk, juices or alcohol. This can lead to undesirable interactions which, in the worst case, can harm your body.

Capsules consist of a capsule shell and an active ingredient that is already contained in powder form.

In many cases, the capsule shell consists of animal protein such as gelatine. Nowadays, however, more and more shells made of vegetable substances such as cellulose are being used to make it possible for vegetarians or vegans to take the capsules.

The capsule shells are also often differently coloured. This can be purely an identification mark of the manufacturer, otherwise the colouring serves to protect against light irradiation.

Basically, the difference between a capsule and a tablet is not great. In some cases, the disintegration of a capsule can take longer than that of a tablet.

This is because the shell has to be dissolved by your body first. Tablets that only disintegrate in the small intestine are very easy on the stomach.

Like the tablet, the capsule should be taken with plenty of water. Due to the smooth shell, a capsule is usually easier to swallow than a tablet.

In a few cases, fat burners are offered as a powder. You have to dose the powder and dissolve it in a certain amount of water. The transport of powders is therefore somewhat more complicated than with pre-dosed capsules or tablets.

Due to the larger surface area of the powder, your body can process the active ingredient more quickly. The difference to a tablet or capsule is very small, however, the aggressive acids in the stomach can partially destroy the active ingredients. For taste, it is often more pleasant to swallow a tablet or capsule.

Recommended dosage

You can use the recommended dosage to get the right amount of fat burner. The recommended dosage for fat burners is two to three times a day.

If, on the other hand, the manufacturer communicates a dosage recommendation that significantly exceeds this value, you should check with your family doctor or pharmacist to be sure.

Most fat burners are taken both in the morning and at lunchtime before meals. Many fat burners contain caffeine and other performance-enhancing substances. Therefore, they are excellent workout boosters.

Did you know that there are also fat burners that are on the doping list?

The active ingredient ephedrine is extracted from the plant Ephedra sinica and was traditionally used as a remedy for asthma, hay fever and colds. However, ephedrine can also be produced synthetically and is usually consumed in tablet or capsule form.

Ephedrine is used as a doping agent because it releases adrenaline, causing increased fat release, thermogenesis, apetite inhibition and metabolic stimulation.

Country of origin

By knowing the country of origin of a fat burner, you can assess the potential risks of taking the product. In Germany, fat burners fall into the category of food supplements.

Unlike medicines, there is no obligation to obtain a marketing authorisation. German manufacturers only have to register the products and are then responsible for the compatibility of the food supplement.

In Germany, the food authority takes on the task of monitoring these products, in accordance with the food standards on which Germany is based.

However, the risks are greater with products from abroad, as these are not necessarily subject to the food standards or the German legal situation. Therefore, other ingredients may be added, the addition of which would be prohibited in other countries.

We advise you not to buy fat burners that are not manufactured in the EU.

Important fat burner ingredients

As you have already learned, there are different active ingredients used in different fat burners.

We have already discussed some of the active ingredients in the section "Decision: Which different fat burners are there and which one is right for you?". Fat burners do not always contain only active ingredients that can help burn fat.

You can check the list of ingredients to see exactly which substances are present and in what concentration. Often, fat burners contain vitamins or other fillers that are not important for your fat metabolism.

Caffeine

If a fat burner contains caffeine, it can increase your performance. However, high doses of caffeine can also lead to insomnia, heart palpitations or restlessness.

You may need to give up your daily cups of coffee or tea if you are taking a fat burner with caffeine.

Fat burners containing caffeine should not be taken in the late afternoon or evening. This could lead to sleep problems.

Gluten-free

More and more people suffer from gluten sensitivity or gluten intolerance. Those affected sometimes cannot tolerate wheat-typical gluten at all. If you have an intolerance, you should pay close attention to the ingredients of the fat burner.

Unfortunately, not all fat burners are clearly labelled as gluten-free. If you are unsure, it always helps to contact the manufacturer personally.

Lactose-free

Lactose is the sugar found in dairy products. Many people suffer from lactose intolerance. In Germany, for example, about 15 percent of the population suffers from lactose intolerance.

If you are also one of those people who cannot tolerate lactose, you should also look out for this criterion.

Aspartame-free

Aspartame is a sweetener that is found in many diet products or light drinks because of its low-calorie properties. A harmful effect of aspartame on health has not yet been clearly proven.

However, it is assumed that taking large amounts of the sweetener can be harmful to your health. We therefore recommend that you avoid fat burners with aspartame and look for the label "aspartame-free".

Vegetarian

Many fat burners contain active substances and ingredients from animal sources. The contents label often does not provide complete information on whether these contents are active ingredients of animal origin.

With these ingredients you can assume that the product contains animal substances:

These ingredients are only a small selection of substances that are not suitable for vegetarians. We recommend that you look for the label "suitable for vegetarians" or "purely vegetable".

The slogan "purely natural" can be misleading and does not exclude that the product does not contain animal ingredients.

Vegan

Vegans do not use any substances of animal origin. If you live vegan, you should look for signal words such as "purely vegetable" in addition to the "vegan" label.

You will find numerous animal ingredients under the heading "Vegetarian" that you should not consume if you are looking for vegan fat burner products.

How does fat burning work in the body?

The body needs this energy supply even at rest to keep the cells in the body alive. With increasing activity, the energy consumption in your body also increases. However, if the energy provided is not used, it is deposited in the fatty tissue.

This unwanted and excess fat is stored because it cannot be burned immediately by our body. The body sees this fat as an energy supplier of inferior quality. For this reason, it always resorts to recently supplied energy through food first. This makes it so difficult for us to get rid of the stored fat.
