The Best Flipchart: Our Picks

Buying and evaluation criteria for a flipchart

In the following, we will show you what you should look for when you decide to buy a flipchart. The criteria used to compare flipcharts include:

Material

If you want to buy a flipchart, you should think about exactly what the presentation tool will be used for. This will determine which material is suitable. For flipcharts that are moved around a lot, pure plastic models are the best choice. These have a significantly lower weight and thus guarantee easy transport.

The use of metal gives the flipchart magnetic properties.

Of course, there are also combinations of plastic and metal, in which sensitive elements are reinforced with the robust material. Models made of pure metal are particularly suitable for stationary use and give the flipchart additional magnetic properties. Flipcharts made of wood, however, are a special eye-catcher. These are rarely found in seminar rooms, but are very popular in environmentally conscious offices.

Flipchart / whiteboard combination

Especially when you are preparing for a presentation, it is important to be prepared for every scenario. This is why the combination of flipcharts and whiteboards has become all the more common. Here, the paper support surface of the flipchart consists of a white board with a smooth surface that can be written on with suitable markers. The surface can be cleaned with a dry sponge and wiped clean without the use of water.

Height adjustability

To ensure that the flipchart can be written on legibly to the full extent, a telescopic rod allows the height to be adjusted. This means that everyone - tall or short - can prepare and give their presentation in a comfortable posture. In addition, the adjustable height means that the sheets can also be presented directly on the flipchart for everyone to see.

Magnetic

As already mentioned, the material determines the flipchart's final properties. The use of metal gives a flipchart magnetic properties, another plus point in terms of flexibility.

There is not always enough space on the flipchart for every piece of information. Magnets help you to add extra notes and visualisations to your presentation.

If you want to add magnets to your presentation, make sure that the flipchart offers this option.

Pen tray

To ensure that you always have an overview of your work utensils, a flipchart with a built-in pen tray is a good idea. In this case, a board is mounted at the bottom edge of the board where all the pens can be placed. Alternatively, you can also store your materials in a presentation case, but you should still make sure that you don't lose sight of your pen during a presentation.

Decision: What types of flipchart are there and which is the right one for me?

When it comes to flipcharts, there are two alternatives to choose between:

Type Advantages Disadvantages
Flipchart with wheels Movable, Can be transported in the room Heavy, Takes up space when stowing, More wobbly stand
Flipchart with tripod stand Stable stand, Often foldable, Easy to stow away More cumbersome to transport, More bulky in the room

One of the most important decision points when it comes to flipcharts is the stand. This determines whether the flipchart is suitable for mobile use. Castors make it easier to transport within a building, but the tripod stand makes it easier to take from place to place. The purpose for which the flipchart is to be used must be taken into account here as a matter of urgency.

Flipchart with castors

Flipcharts with a castor base are particularly suitable for location-independent use, as transport within the same building is facilitated. The castors make it easy to move the flipchart, which allows for more flexible presentations.

Advantages
  • Location-independent in the building
  • Transportable
  • Movable
Disadvantages
  • Increased dead weight
  • More space required
  • Unstable stand

The main disadvantage of flipcharts with a roller base is the possibility of an unstable stand.

Flipchart with tripod stand

Flipcharts with a tripod stand have the advantage of being foldable. This makes storage easier, as less space is needed for the stand. If the flipchart is mobile, it is easy to transport due to its low weight.

Advantages
  • Foldable
  • Stowable
  • Stable stand
  • Low weight
Disadvantages
  • Bulky in the room
  • Cannot be moved
  • Less flexibility

The biggest disadvantage of flipcharts with a tripod stand arises during the presentation process. Because of the fixed stand, it is not possible to move the flipchart. To do this, you would have to lift the entire flipchart and move it.

Guide: Frequently asked questions about flipcharts answered in detail

If you are thinking about buying a flipchart, there are probably some questions you would like to have answered beforehand. In our flipchart guide, we have selected the most frequently asked questions from customers and answered them.

What is a flipchart?

A flipchart, also known as a whiteboard, is a visual aid for presentations. It is a frame to which a pad of paper is attached via a clamping device, the sheets of which are folded upwards. This feature is also the origin of the name flipchart, which translates as "flip chart". Flipcharts usually have a standardised size based on the B1 format. (100 × 71 centimetres)

The size of flipcharts can also differ from the standard. It is important that you always pay attention to this before buying suitable paper.

What are flipcharts used for?

Whether in schools for presentations or in offices for meetings and lectures, the flipchart can be used flexibly as a visual aid for any presentation. During a lecture, the flipchart can be used to consolidate the content said and thus increase comprehensibility.

The flipchart is also very popular for working out information independently, especially in group work. The advantage here is the permanent visibility of the information. Unlike other media, sheets can be hung up permanently in rooms.

Who is a flipchart suitable for?

Flipcharts are suitable for anyone who wants to combine their presentations with spontaneity.

Flipcharts can be used for presentations as well as for drawing games.

As a visual aid, flipcharts have a wide range of applications. Not only educational institutions, offices and seminar rooms benefit from the use of flipcharts, but also private individuals can use them in a variety of ways. Flipcharts can be used in sports to plan training sessions or to brainstorm new ideas. However, flipcharts are most popular in seminars, where tasks are worked out in groups and presented directly to other participants. This results in increased interactivity and flexibility in everyday seminar life, and the participants can grasp the content better.

What accessories are available?

In addition to the flipchart frame, there are also paper, pens, magnets, presentation cases and cards. It is important to make sure you get the right pens. Special pens for flipcharts do not imprint on the paper underneath, so you can prepare your presentations without worrying.

But beware: flipchart markers are not always whiteboard markers! If you have a flipchart/whiteboard combination, make sure to use pens that are suitable for both. Of course, there are pens that write on both surfaces and can be removed from the whiteboard without leaving any residue! However, there is hardly anything more annoying than accidentally sketching on your whiteboard with a permanent marker.

Therefore, caution is always advised here. If you give a lot of presentations, it is a good idea to have a presentation case that already contains pens, magnets and cards in various shapes. In addition to flipchart paper, these extras can add variety to any presentation.

What are the alternatives to flipcharts?

Whiteboards are often used as a paperless alternative. These white boards with a smooth surface can be temporarily written on with special pens. While flipcharts can be stored, whiteboards need to be cleaned with a dry sponge after each use so that they can be written on again.

In recent years, the trend towards digitalisation has also gained considerable influence in the area of presentation tools. Workspaces are changing. More and more employees work in home offices and the use of online platforms at schools and universities increases the demand for digital learning materials. Digital flipcharts, whiteboards and beamers are being used more and more in lessons and presentations.

The ability to save what has been written directly as a PDF offers the advantage of disseminating information quickly and easily. After presentations, the designed pages can be sent to all audience members with just one click. With a digital flipchart, no information is lost and, in addition, paper consumption is greatly reduced for the sake of the environment.

How big is a flipchart?

A flipchart usually has a size of 100 × 71 centimetres, which corresponds to the B1 format. However, there are also flipcharts in smaller formats on the market. Therefore, it is advisable to pay attention to the size when buying so that you actually get the right paper size for your flipchart.

How do I design a flipchart?

The design of a flipchart is up to the presenter. However, we have summarised the most important tips for you here:

  1. Headings: Make sure to give each sheet a heading so that it is clear what the information is about, even in later use.
  2. Free space: It is advisable to leave the margins free. This will ensure that your content remains legible. Even drawn information should have as much white space as possible.
  3. Keywords: Short and concise instead of full sentences is the motto! If you value clarity, make sure to fill the sheets with short, concise information.
  4. Colours: Try to use at least 3 different colours on your sheet. This will ensure that your audience can immediately grasp the most important information visually.
  5. Sketches: Flipchart sketches are an art form in themselves. Visualisation dictionaries can help to illustrate even difficult information in an understandable way.

How do I clean a flipchart?

It's very simple: just tear off the paper and you're done! Since a flipchart is the framework on which the paper is mounted, cleaning is not necessary. However, if you use a flipchart/whiteboard combination, a dry sponge is recommended so that the written material can be removed completely.
