The Best Flower Stand: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a flower stand

Who is a flower stand suitable for?

A flower stand is suitable for everyone. Flowers that stand on the floor are not so nice to look at. That's why there are flower stands in all different types. Whether made of wood, metal or stone, there is something for every taste.

Flower stands are particularly suitable for hanging plants. Ivy or rhipsalis grow downwards and need space. With a flower stand, these can be raised so that they have enough space.

But normal potted plants can also be placed on a flower stand. This makes watering easier, especially for older people.

Nowadays, there are more and more unusual designs, so there is something for everyone. However, if someone is not satisfied, a flower stand can always be easily built by oneself. A simple tree trunk or an old ladder are perfect for this.

There are no limits to your imagination.

For what purpose should the flower stand be installed?

Should the flower stand be used for a beautiful presentation, or should it only serve its purpose? Should it be installed for hanging plants or normal potted plants?

Flower stands that are intended to look beautiful can quickly become expensive. However, if you only need a very simple solution, you can build a flower stand yourself or buy one cheaply at various DIY stores or on the Internet.

If you have hanging plants, however, there is something you should consider. Hanging plants benefit from being placed higher up, as they can grow downwards.

Consequently, a high flower stand is necessary so that they have enough space to grow.

A flower ladder is perfect for this. This allows them to be perfectly integrated into the home.

What are the alternatives to a flower stand?

Hanging pots are a sensible way to integrate plants into the home. Hanging plants in particular benefit from this, as they can grow downwards. However, they are usually not suitable for normal plants, as they are otherwise difficult to see.

Shelves are also a good substitute for a flower stand. This way you don't have to spend money and nothing is standing around in the way. The same applies to cupboards or tables. However, these cannot be set up in every place because space is limited.

In general, many objects can be used as flower stands or flower stand substitutes. In the cellar you can often find old furniture that is no longer needed. With a little paint, these can quickly be converted into a popular flower stand.

Decision: What types of flower stands are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, flower stands can be divided into four categories

  • Wooden flower stands
  • Metal flower stands
  • Glass flower stands / ceramic flower stands
  • Plastic flower stand

The different types of flower stands each have advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the purpose for which a flower stand is needed, a different one is suitable for you. In the next section, we will explain the differences, advantages and disadvantages.

What distinguishes a wooden flower stand and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Wooden flower stands come in different designs. On the one hand, there are ordinary versions with legs, on the other hand, there are also those that are made from a whole wooden trunk.

However, these are usually more expensive and a lot heavier. It all depends on your own taste.

  • Very robust
  • Warm appearance
  • Sustainable raw material
  • Heavy
  • Can only be used outdoors to a limited extent
  • Maintenance required

There are also various types of wood that are used for flower stands. These differ mainly in colour and weight.

In addition, many wooden flower stands can only be used indoors, as they would swell too quickly outdoors.

What distinguishes a metal flower stand and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Metal flower stands are timeless and can easily support most flower pots due to their stability.

  • Inexpensive
  • Can be used outdoors
  • Resistant
  • Heavy
  • Can rust

Higher-quality models made of stainless steel are immune to rust and can be placed outside all year round without any problems.

What distinguishes a glass flower stand / ceramic flower stand and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Glass flower stands can convince because of their great design. They also have the advantage that they neither rust nor show other signs of wear.

  • No wear and tear
  • High quality
  • Cannot rust
  • More expensive
  • Easily breakable
  • Requires care

However, it should be noted that these can also break very quickly and are therefore rather unsuitable for households with free-roaming animals or small children.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of plastic flower stands?

Plastic flower stands can be convincing because of their low weight. However, they are usually not nearly as high quality as those made of glass, wood or metal.

  • Inexpensive
  • Can be used outdoors
  • Easy
  • Not as high quality
  • Assembly usually necessary
  • Wear and tear quickly visible

Buying criteria: These are the factors you can use to compare and evaluate flower stands

In the following, we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the many possible flower stands.

The criteria you can use to compare the flower stands with each other include:

  • Location
  • Workload / Assembly
  • Material

In the following paragraphs, we will explain to you what is important in the individual criteria.

Place of use

The place of use determines which material comes into question. If the place of use is inside the house, almost any flower stand can be used.

However, if the location is outside, outdoors, the flower stand must be able to withstand all weather conditions. This means that most wooden flower stands cannot be used, as they swell up very quickly.

Glass flower stands or ceramic flower stands are also not recommended, as they can break quickly.

The best choice is either metal flower stands or plastic flower stands. These are resistant to all weather conditions and are therefore perfect for outdoor use.

Workload / Assembly

Many flower stands require assembly. However, in most cases this is very simple and therefore suitable for people without manual skills.

Different materials have different advantages and disadvantages. But there are also differences among the various main groups.

Wooden flower stands are not always the same. Due to various types of wood, they differ mainly in their colour. Popular are:

  • Beech
  • Oak
  • Pine
  • Mahogany
  • Rosewood

In general, wooden flower stands are not always suitable for outdoor use, as they have to be impregnated beforehand.

There are also differences in the material of metal flower stands. Here you should make sure that it is made of stainless steel if it is to be used outdoors. Stainless steel is suitable because it is rust-free and therefore ideal for outdoor use.

However, if it is to be used indoors, stainless steel no longer plays a major role.

Facts worth knowing about the topic of flower stands

Can I build a flower stand myself?

If you decide to build a flower stand yourself, there are several ways to do it. First, you need to decide how big you want it to be. If you only want to make a flower stand for a table, there is a great solution.

For example, an old lampshade can become a great flower stand. This should ideally be cone-shaped. First, remove the fabric so that only the metal frame remains.

This must now be cleaned and sanded. Then the bulb holder can be removed with pliers. Once again, sand thoroughly and the flower pot can be inserted.

If the colour doesn't match, you can always spray it in the colour of your choice so that it blends in perfectly with your surroundings.

If you are looking for a larger flower stand, a folding ladder is the perfect solution.

You can find a wooden folding ladder in most DIY stores. They don't have to be expensive. However, you should make sure that it is also reasonably stable.

Now you need boards in different sizes. The ladder is now set up and the boards can be placed over the steps. Now you have to screw them tight so that there is a good hold between the two steps.

If you like, you can paint the ladder and you have a great flower staircase.

If the DIY flower stand is to be used outside, make sure that the paint is suitable for outdoor use, otherwise it will peel off easily.
