  • You should be careful when storing fruit in fruit bowls never to stack your fruit together with an apple, banana or pear. They all emit ripening gases (ethylene) that will quickly over-ripen and rot neighbouring fruit.
  • Nowadays you can buy fruit bowls in a wide variety of materials. From stainless steel to wood, porcelain, metal or glass, there is simply everything.

What kind of fruit bowls are there?

You will have to deal with this question at the latest when you are looking for a fruit bowl that is tailored to your situation.

No matter whether you want something practical, robust or simply stylish to embellish your entire living situation, the range of fruit bowls will not disappoint you. In order to make it easier for you to keep track of the sea of offers, we have divided the fruit bowls into: Material, shape and type. The material section is self-explanatory.

Here we list the most common materials used to make fruit bowls:

  • Stainless steel
  • Glass
  • Wood (bamboo, olive wood, teak)
  • Metal
  • Ceramics
  • Porcelain
  • Chrome
  • Clay

You will quickly notice that basically all materials differ in terms of their chemical nature. When choosing the material, it is important that you know what you like. Since everyone's tastes are different, we can only give you an idea of some of the association tendencies at this point.

For example, stainless steel often appears in connection with a "modern" kitchen, whereas a fruit bowl made of clay or wood is more likely to be mentioned in a natural and Mediterranean context. We keep everything on the subject of shape simple. The most common shapes are oval, rectangular, square, oblong or round. The distinction by type is surprising to many at first glance.

If you are wondering whether fruit bowls differ in type, then we answer yes! A fruit bowl is distinguished, for example, by whether it is a multi-level or hanging fruit bowl. Furthermore, we distinguish whether the fruit bowl is equipped with a device for fly protection, such as a fly screen or a bonnet.

Within the scope of this question we conclude: The choice and combination possibilities of material, shape and type are limitless and it should therefore be no problem to fulfil your individual wishes.

How much do fruit bowls cost?

The price segment for fruit bowls is as huge as the market. Nevertheless, we would like to show you the price trends so that we can give you some orientation. These are largely determined by the factors of material and size, as they are the most important price criteria for fruit bowls.

The starting prices are around 9 euros. We recommend that you do not go below this lower price limit, because fruit bowls in this price range rarely meet healthy standards. As with all products, there is no upper limit to the prices. High-quality models with a noble design from renowned manufacturers can cost up to 80 euros and even more.

Did you know that the most expensive fruit in the world costs 20,000 US dollars? It is the Yubari melon from Japan. The price of the fruit is so high because the melons are individually cared for and even massaged as they grow.

With prices that exceed the initial limit, it is not only important to see what material you have used, but also how it has been processed. For example, one cannot say that only stainless steel is necessarily expensive, but fruit bowls made of clay or wood can also be expensive if the materials used are well selected and processed. We think that the latter is self-explanatory anyway and you have certainly understood how the pricing of fruit bowls works.

What are the alternatives to fruit bowl storage?

As an alternative to storage in a fruit bowl, the refrigerator, your own packaging or the cellar is usually used.

The refrigerator is, mistakenly, not suitable for storage in most cases. It prevents the ripening gases from escaping and its coldness destroys the aroma and cell respiration of most types of fruit. Loss of flavour and glassy spots and dents are the result.

The own packaging works similarly to a fruit bowl, only much worse. This is because it usually consists of a plastic tray and bag and considerably restricts the escape of the ripening gases. But other forms of packaging are also unsuitable, as they often absorb the aromas and instead give their own packaging aroma to the fruit.

When storing in the cellar, make sure that the room has good ventilation. This will prevent the ethylene gases from accumulating. Many vitamins and other nutrients of the fruit are sensitive - light, oxygen, heat and humidity should therefore be avoided as much as possible. It is important to bear in mind that not all fruits and vegetables are suitable for the cool cellar. Some need room temperature to be preserved.

Decision: What types of fruit bowls are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, a distinction can be made between three types of fruit bowls:

  • Fruit bowl made of wood
  • Fruit bowl made of metal
  • Fruit bowl made of glass or ceramic

In general, you can buy fruit bowls made of wood, metal, glass or ceramic. In addition to questions regarding stability, you should primarily decide according to your preferences in terms of appearance.

In the following section, we would like to help you answer the question of which type of fruit bowl is best suited for your home. To make this decision easier for you, we will present the three types of fruit bowls in more detail and give you an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

What distinguishes a wooden fruit bowl and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

A wooden fruit bowl is a very common way to store fruit. These wooden bowls can be made from a wide variety of woods, such as bamboo, olive wood or teak. If you would like to keep your home décor in a more natural and Mediterranean style, a wooden bowl is perfect, as wooden bowls are often truly unique and therefore very decorative and universally applicable.

  • Stable
  • Unique
  • Decorative
  • Universally applicable
  • Not dishwasher safe
  • No banana hangers

Another advantage of a wooden fruit bowl is that they are usually food-safe and are also stable due to their nature. However, this implies that these bowls are not suitable for the dishwasher, as they could otherwise be damaged. Furthermore, fruit bowls made of wood do not offer the possibility to integrate a banana hanger.

What distinguishes a metal fruit bowl and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Metal fruit bowls are primarily only visually different from wooden bowls because they are very stable and the only type that is also suitable for heavy objects. Due to the manufacturing method, unusual designs are also possible. Among other things, there may also be a useful addition for hanging bananas.

  • Suitable for a lot of fruit
  • Robust
  • Often with banana hanger
  • Not dishwasher safe
  • Not unique

Metal fruit bowls are usually food-safe and very robust. However, metal bowls are not suitable for the dishwasher and must therefore be cleaned by hand. In addition, compared to wooden bowls, metal bowls are not unique and are mass-produced.

What distinguishes a glass or ceramic fruit bowl and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Bowls made of glass or ceramic are very popular and are often used for storing fruit. Due to their material, they are also very suitable for decorative purposes and can therefore be used universally. Another advantage of glass and ceramic bowls is that they are food-safe and you can therefore store your fruit in them without hesitation.

  • Decorative
  • Can be used universally
  • Hardly any variations in shape
  • Not break-proof
  • No banana hangers

Due to the special manufacturing process, however, variations in shape are rather rare, which is why it is not possible to attach hooks for hanging bananas here. If you prefer a fruit bowl made of glass or ceramic, you should also bear in mind that they are not very stable due to their material.

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate fruit bowls

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate fruit bowls. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular bowl is particularly suitable for you. In summary, these are:

  • Dimensions
  • Material
  • Processing
  • Shape
  • Colour
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Food-safe

In the following paragraphs you can read about the individual purchase criteria and how you can classify them.

In general, there is a wide range of different models, which vary mainly in size.

Of course, it depends on your need for fruit. If you are a person who likes to eat a lot of fruit, the dimensions of the bowl should also be larger so that you can safely accommodate your large purchases. However, if you are someone who rarely eats fruit, a small fruit bowl will suffice. It will still look "full to bursting" because the amount of fruit is adapted to the size of the bowl.

Nowadays you can get fruit bowls in a wide variety of materials. But not all materials share the same characteristics. From stainless steel to wood, porcelain, metal or glass, there is simply everything.

If you want to buy a fruit bowl made of stainless steel or bamboo, for example, not only does the surface have a different texture, but the bowl is also different in terms of robustness. Stainless steel is particularly suitable for various purposes, for example for storing heavy objects.

Fruit bowls made of wood such as acacia wood, root wood or bamboo are also characterised by their stability and durability. Especially for those who want to acquire a unique piece, a wooden bowl is the best choice.

Especially when using root wood, unique looks are created and no two fruit bowls are alike. For people who love it individually and are nature lovers, it is a must-have. Glass is and always has been a very special material, which is why it is also often used for fruit bowls. However, the choice here is often a little limited, but only as far as shapes are concerned.

Good workmanship is extremely important for a fruit bowl, as you store your fruit in it and want to eat it later.

Good workmanship ensures that no harmful substances get into your food. The bowl should also have a certain stability in case it should fall on the floor.

The choice of shapes for fruit bowls is overwhelming. This allows you to find the right bowl for your personal style of living.

The many shapes and design aspects come together in the base, i.e. a basic shape. This can take on different dimensions. But what shapes are there actually? No limits have been set here, because from round to oval, rectangular, square or wave-shaped, every shape is simply included.

The colours result from the type of materials. Of course, glass is transparent, metal silver and wood in brown tones.

So everyone can find the perfect fruit bowl for their interior style, so that the fruit can also be placed in style. Tempting and delicious, the fruit then beckons.

Dishwasher safe

Not all manufacturers declare their fruit bowls as dishwasher-safe. Fruit bowls made of stainless steel, glass or porcelain tend to be more suitable for the dishwasher than others. Restrictions can also sometimes occur due to the design.

Please pay attention to whether the model is suitable for the dishwasher or not, because, for example, fruit bowls with patterns that are not dishwasher-safe will have all their patterns washed away in the wash cycle.

Otherwise, you can clean the fruit bowl by hand under warm water or, in the case of fruit bowls made of wood or similar material, simply clean it with a damp cloth.

With a food-safe finish inside and out, food can be stored and served in the bowls without hesitation.

This means that the quality of the food, in terms of taste and smell, is not affectedand the fruit can come into contact with the fruit bowl without hesitation.

Facts worth knowing about fruit bowls

Which fruit can be stored together in a fruit bowl?

In fact, this question is not suspect, but very important. Not all types of fruit can be stacked together without hindrance. In the following, we would like to introduce you to the troublemakers - and the resulting problems.

Basically, all types of fruit can be stored together without any problems. In Europe, however, apples, pears and bananas are exceptions. They are the so-called troublemakers we are talking about. Make sure that you do not store any of the three varieties together with other varieties, because they all emit ethylene, a gas that makes ethylene-sensitive fruits ripen faster.

It is advisable not to be too stingy with the spacing, because the effect of the gas only fizzles out from about 50 cm. Ethylene-sensitive fruits are, for example, peaches, nectarines, apricots, berries and grapes. To avoid confusion and errors, we would like to point out that apples, bananas and pears should not be stacked together. They influence each other and bananas in particular overripe much too quickly and then become inedible.

Did you know that pomegranates are one of the healthiest fruits? For example, pomegranate juice reduces blood pressure. In addition, you can make tea from the skin of the pomegranate. Simply pour hot water over small pieces of the peel. This tea is said to be particularly helpful for flu-like infections.

By the way, the ethylene effect does not always have to be negative: often the products from the supermarket are not ripe enough and can only be consumed a few days later. That's why you can use the effect for yourself by deliberately placing unripe fruit or fruit near apples, pears or bananas, thereby naturally accelerating the ripening process.

In addition, the ripening factor is determined bythe proximity to green plants and the room temperature. Make sure you find the right optimum here. In addition, there is a completely different group of troublemakers - namely rotten plants. You should always remove this immediately, as it also causes neighbouring plants to rot. However, if it is no longer quite so fresh, but not rotten, it can still be processed into delicious juice with a smoothie maker or a juicer. There are no limits to the imagination here.

Fruit Place Note
Apples Cool cellar room Apples should be stored at a sufficient distance from each other and not with other fruit and vegetables
Berries Refrigerator Berries should only be washed shortly before consumption and stored with sufficient space from each other, so they last longer
Pears Cool cellar room -
Stone fruit At room temperature These are e.g. plums, peaches, cherries etc.. To protect them from fruit flies, an insect bonnet helps
Citrus fruits At room temperature Oranges, lemons, nectarines etc.

Is the fruit bowl best for storage?

Indeed, fruit is best stored in a fruit bowl. In addition to practical and aesthetic aspects, however, free space is particularly important, because closed containers or even the refrigerator spoil or damage the fruit very quickly.

A fruit bowl is certainly very decorative on the table and also functions as a visual appetiser, because the freshly picked fruit is always in view and ready to eat. Many products from the supermarket have not yet reached their edible ripeness when they are bought. Exotic goods are particularly affected by this. To ensure that they too can develop their ripeness and aroma unhindered, it is very important that you store them in the open air at an optimal ambient temperature.

In general, this recommendation applies to all types of fruit, because storing them in closed containers prevents the ripening gases from escaping and thus leads to faster spoilage. Citrus fruits and other exotic varieties lose their aroma in the refrigerator. In addition, they do not tolerate the cold, as the cold prevents their cellular respiration.
