You should also consider the weight of your gas barbecue in the garden or on your terrace. A heavier weight makes it more difficult for you to move your BBQ or to get it out or put it away. Gas kettle barbecues are not necessarily designed for mobile use, so their heavier weight should not be a problem for you. Of course, if your model has wheels, this makes it easier to move around. Gas barbecue trolleys and lava stone barbecues benefit from their significantly higher weight on one side. This makes them stand solidly on the ground. Since they are often equipped with shelves, a firm stand is particularly advantageous. This way, nothing can fall off. If the ground is uneven, you should therefore think twice about your decision. The ratio of the grilling surface to the dimensions is greatest here. Gas kettle grills take up considerably more space when assembled. In general, the grill and sphere cover are rather bulky. Those who value professional grilling conditions should see the advantages over the higher space consumption. Savings in size do not come at the expense of functionality and handling here. With dimensions of up to 150 cm long by 100 cm wide and a working height of 100 cm, these models represent the top when it comes to dimensions. This extra length, width and height primarily offers space for storage, generously designed controls and plenty of free space and range of movement for you. You should have enough space within your garden, because gas barbecue trolleys and lava barbecues require a lot of floor space.

Number of burners

Different grilled food requires different heat and times until the perfect cooking point is reached. With several burners, a gas barbecue has different heating zones, i.e. areas where the temperature can be set freely and independently. This also allows you to use only a certain area of the gas barbecue if you are only barbecuing for a few guests.

Of all grills, the gas grill heats up the fastest.

This means you can use exactly the right amount of grilling surface for the amount of meat, fish or vegetables you need. In addition, several burners can be used for indirect grilling. Heating zones directly under your food can be easily deactivated. Generally, it is the barbecue trolleys that have more than one burner available. You usually have a choice between two- and six-burner gas barbecues. Mobile gas barbecues and kettle barbecues are mainly designed with a single burner. This covers the entire grilling surface. The situation with lava stone gas barbecues is similar to that with barbecue trolleys. Here, too, you have several options regarding the number of burners. However, you should bear in mind that the stones distribute the heat more evenly anyway, so fine-tuning the zones is less precise.

Side burners

In addition to the main burners, barbecue trolleys often have the option of heating, cooking or roasting additional food using additional burners attached to the side. The additional heat sources are usually attached to the left or right side of the grill surface. The additional storage areas provided by the burners when closed are particularly helpful. In some cases, lava stone gas grills are also equipped with heat sources on the sides. This gives you additional options and comfort with both variants. Your BBQ is thus enhanced with features that you would otherwise be more familiar with from a kitchen. This type of extension is unusual with mobile gas barbecues and kettle barbecues. With them, barbecue fun is available in classic form. If you want to prepare other dishes at the same time, you have to use an external cooker or the cooker in your kitchen.


In general, there are appliances with covers in every gas barbecue segment. They offer the possibility of preparing food indirectly, keep your food warm and protect it from the wind, especially if you are having your BBQ in an open area. Cover bonnets are an important feature, especially for kettle grills. Due to the round shape of the grilling surface and the bonnet, the temperature develops very evenly. The air vents allow you to control the heat individually and thus grill indirectly. Gas barbecue trolleys are also usually equipped with a cover. Mobile gas barbecues often feature lightweight materials. Cast iron is rarely found in this case. Enamelled steel is often used because it is robust and can reflect heat comparatively well in the grill. In addition, the material proves to be stable despite its low weight. However, this material does not allow heat to be stored and released evenly, as is the case with cast iron.

Due to the high output and the large number of burners, the focus is more on rapid temperature changes and less on storage capacity.

Enamelled steel is also often used for kettle grills. Because this type of grill is intended to keep the temperature precise and controllable in a timely manner, the rather low storage capacity of these materials benefits the appliance. Barbecue trolleys mainly have stainless steel housings.

Material of the grill surface

The grill grate is an important factor that determines whether a gas grill is desirable or undesirable. Cast iron or enamelled steel is also used in this case. Cast iron usually has the advantage of being thicker. This means that more direct heat is transferred to your food. On the other hand, a cast iron grill stores more heat. On the one hand, high temperatures are transferred to your meat over a longer period of time, which is particularly important for steaks.

There are also grill plates, pot inserts and even pizza stones for the gas grill.

On the other hand, this variant takes longer to increase the heat or to reduce it again. Cast iron grills therefore require more feeling and experience when grilling. Steel grates heat up more quickly, which reduces the waiting time. The choice of gas bottles or cartridges is particularly relevant when using gas. Gas hoses, bottle connections and special conversion adapters are of great importance. These allow you to use conventional gas bottle types on the barbecue.

The gas flame opens up special possibilities for the barbecue surface. Grill plates, pot inserts and even pizza stones make interesting additions to the conventional barbecue grill. Wood flakes are available to achieve smoky wood aromas.

Which gas is used for gas barbecues?

Basically, gas is offered in DIY stores, online and in fuel retailers. Two types of gas are relevant: Propane and Butane. Which gas is used for gas barbecues also depends on the particular model. Propane gas has a higher calorific value and it develops more heat for the same amount. This type of gas is therefore also more space-saving. The alternative is butane liquid gas. However, it is more expensive and can no longer evaporate at sub-zero temperatures. Both types are commercially available. You can also use a gas barbecue with an adapter to connect it to the natural gas supply in your house.

How long does a gas bottle last?

The question of how long you can use a gas bottle depends on its size and on the performance of your gas barbecue. If we assume that 70 g of gas are consumed per kilowatt of barbecue power per hour, this means 700 g for a 10,000-watt barbecue. Consequently, a bottle with 8 kg of gas would last around eleven hours. Filling such a gas bottle with 8 kg of propane costs around 15 euros. Now, you might think that three barbecue sessions a month of three to four hours each would add up to high costs, but you don't always barbecue under full load.

How do I avoid smoke when grilling with gas?

The cause of unpleasant smoke is usually to be found on the grill grate, the housing or the gas burners. Barbecue residues and dripping fat are usually the cause of unpleasant smoke. It is generally advisable to leave the burner running for a while after using a gas barbecue. This burns out residues. This makes it easier to scrape off dirt and burnt-on residue. Cleaning the grill grate also helps to prevent smoke.

If you want to give your beginner or professional gas grill extra protection, you can cook your food indirectly. This way there is no danger of fat and meat juices dripping onto the flames. You should also tighten the gas bottle after each use. It must be set up at a sufficient distance from the barbecue grill. This will prevent it from heating up too much. Defective igniters should be repaired.

Are gas barbecues generally allowed on the balcony?
