The EFSA therefore recommends a maximum dose of 800 mg EGCG not to be exceeded. Studies have already shown that higher doses resulted in increased liver values.
Therefore, you should always consider the information given on the packaging and not exceed the recommended daily dose. However, before taking the supplement, it is advisable to calculate exactly how much EGCG you are taking in the recommended daily dosage. What are the advantages and disadvantages of green tea extract in the form of capsules?
As already mentioned, most green tea extracts are offered in the form of capsules. Since these are filled with the green tea extract by machine, the proportion of the concentrated active ingredients is exactly determined and you do not have to measure for the correct dosage.
Another advantage of the capsules is that you can take them with some liquid at any time, even when you are on the go.
The capsule shell is made of different materials from product to product. Some make it from gelatine or microcrystalline cellulose (a non-water-soluble substance). However, some manufacturers also use water-soluble cellulose (HPMC) for the capsule shell, which is completely harmless due to its water-solubility.
However, they often contain other additives as separating agents, fillers or binders. On the one hand, this can be described as a disadvantage, as gelatine is not suitable for vegans. On the other hand, there is still no scientific consensus on whether the additives have a long-term negative effect on the human body.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of green tea extract in tablet form?
The tablets are similar to the capsules. They are also automatically dosed and you do not have to use a measuring cup or a scale to determine the amount to be taken. This means you are on the safe side with regard to overdosing, as long as you adhere to the EFSA reference values.
You can also take the tablets conveniently on the go. However, there is one difference to the capsule. No capsule shell is needed and at least for this one additive is omitted (unless the capsule is made of water-soluble cellulose).
Nevertheless, tablets also often contain additives such as calcium phosphate. Although these are permitted in the food industry for the manufacture of products, nutrition experts consider them to be harmful to health if taken regularly.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of green tea extract in powder form?
Products produced in powder form usually contain 100 percent green tea extract and are therefore recommended due to their purity and freedom from other additives. Due to the powder form, you can also mix the product with fruit juices or other liquids to get an appealing flavour.
However, it is rather difficult to adhere to the exact reference quantities when dosing green tea extract. Since the recommended amounts are milligram values, measuring with a measuring cup or scale is rather imprecise.
Another disadvantage is that you cannot easily take it on the go. You need a container to fill the powder with the liquid of your choice.

Suitability for vegans and allergy sufferers
As already mentioned in the previous chapters, capsules in particular are often made with animal ingredients such as gelatine. For this reason, they are not suitable for vegans or vegetarians and are therefore not suitable for everyone.
In addition, many supplement manufacturers often produce protein powders or other supplements that are made from milk, soy or eggs. Since the same machines and equipment are used for the production of these as for the production of the green tea extract, it may contain traces of milk, soy or eggs.
In the case of the ranked products in this article, it is sometimes explicitly stated that these substances are not contained in the product. In the other products, no reference to this was found, which also suggests that no allergens are contained in the product.
Concentration level of the active ingredients (ECGC)
Especially the capsules and tablets are sold in different dosages. It should be noted once again that too low doses have little to no effect and too high doses (more than 800 mg EGCG per day) can lead to liver damage.
Therefore, products that indicated a daily dose on the packaging that was higher than the EFSA recommended maximum daily intake were rated as adverse. Manufacturers who have labelled their product with lower individual doses and who have kept to the EFSA guideline value for the daily recommendation were rated positively.
Freedom from undesirable ingredients that are harmful to health
In addition to green tea extract, many capsules and tablets contain additives that nutrition experts consider harmful to health. These are mainly fillers, binders, anti-caking agents and colourings.
Microcrystalline cellulose is a fine plant fibre produced from plant waste in a chemical process. These act in tablets or capsules as a pressing material or separating and flowing agent. In principle, this substance is officially not considered harmful to health. However, these fibres, if small enough, can penetrate the human body and cannot be further processed.
As there are no long-term studies on the effects of this substance in the body, it cannot be ruled out that it may cause damage to health.
The situation is similar with the additive magnesium salts of fatty acids. Officially, the additive is approved by the authorities for production. However, since no long-term studies on the long-term effects of the substance are available yet, a health hazard cannot be completely ruled out.
Calcium phosphates are also frequently used in green tea extracts and serve as acidity regulators. However, this additive is subject to strong criticism. Although it is contained in the product to an insignificantly small extent, calcium phosphate can influence the calcium level in the human body. Therefore, people with osteoperosis in particular should avoid products containing this ingredient.
Products that contain these additives were rated negatively in the ranking and products that do not contain additives were rated positively.
