The Best Gymnastics rings: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying gymnastics rings

Who are gymnastics rings suitable for?

Gymnastics rings are suitable for every sports enthusiast. Whether you are an active child, a hobby athlete or a professional athlete, gymnastics rings are the perfect companion for fun and fitness.

Especially over the last few years, gymnastics rings have really come back into fashion. This is certainly also due to newer sports like Crossfit and Calisthenics. The large community of both sports makes gymnastics rings attractive for the masses.

Furthermore, gymnastics rings offer a lot of advantages. They are relatively cheap, fit in any backpack or gym bag and are incredibly versatile. Because you don't need much space for gymnastic rings, they are very suitable for at home in the flat.

How much do gymnastics rings cost?

You really don't have to dig deep into your wallet for gymnastics rings. In contrast to fitness equipment such as a weight bench, leg press or cross trainer, which cost several hundred euros, you only pay 20 euros for the cheapest gymnastics rings.

Gym rings Price
Made of wood 20-130 €
Made of plastic 20-60 €

What alternatives are there to gymnastics rings?

A very similar alternative to gymnastic rings are sling trainers. You may also know them as sling trainers, suspension trainers or TRX, where TRX is just a brand name.

Sling trainers basically work relatively similarly to gymnastic rings. You have two handles, each of which is connected to each other with a strap, and a suspension option in the form of a hook.

One big difference, however, is that the handles of the sling trainer are padded. This makes them more comfortable to grip, especially for beginners. In contrast to gymnastics rings, where a separate rope or band is attached to each ring, the suspension trainer consists of two bands that are fixed together at the end.

Another alternative are rings with a trapeze. A trapeze has its origins in gymnastics, just like the gymnastics rings, and is basically just a horizontal bar that is suspended on both sides by a rope. When combining gymnastics rings with trapeze, additional rings are attached to both sides of the trapeze. As they are technically neither trapeze nor rings, they are not really used in sports.

Decision: What types of gymnastics rings are there and which is the right one for you?

Gymnastics rings can basically be divided into the following types:

  • Wooden gymnastic rings
  • Gymnastic rings made of plastic

Both variants are identical in function, but there are a few small but subtle differences, which we will explain in the next few paragraphs.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of wooden gymnastics rings?

You are probably most familiar with wooden gymnastics rings. They are also the most commonly used gymnastics rings in hobby and professional sports. A major advantage of wooden gymnastics rings is their appearance. The wood simply looks great because of its grain.

The types of wood used are mostly beech or birch, which are very stable because they are hardwood. Birch wood is very popular, especially in the professional sector. The high absorbency of the wood absorbs sweat and guarantees a safe and pleasant grip.

Advantages
  • Good grip
  • Beautiful appearance
  • Robust
Disadvantages
  • Rather not for outdoor use
  • Weather-sensitive

Although they can be used outdoors in the garden or park, they are unfortunately somewhat weather-sensitive due to the material. That's why wooden gymnastics rings are better used indoors. You have to pay attention to whether the gymnastics rings are painted or not.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of plastic gymnastics rings?

The greatest strength of plastic gymnastics rings is their robustness against wind and weather. This makes them an ideal training tool for outdoor use. For example, if you attach plastic gymnastics rings to the branch of a tree, you don't have to take them down every time after use, unlike wooden gymnastics rings.

Theoretically, you could leave them hanging all year round because they are very weatherproof. The material is ABS plastic, which is very strong and UV light resistant. The colour is usually black, but other colours like red or blue are also available.

Advantages
  • Mostly cheaper
  • Weatherproof
Disadvantages
  • Less grip

A big disadvantage, however, is the poorer grip. Since the plastic cannot absorb sweat, the possibility of slipping is very high. As a solution, gymnastics rings with grain are offered. These are not ideal either, but they are better than completely smooth gymnastics rings.

Buying criteria: You can compare and evaluate gymnastics rings based on these factors

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate gymnastics rings. This will make it easier for you to decide whether certain gymnastics rings are suitable for you or not. In summary, these are:

  • Manufacturer/Brand
  • Suspension
  • Diameter of the rings

Manufacturer/Brand

In the fitness sector, there are many manufacturers/brands that have been established for years. Here we have researched the best-known brands for you:

Rogue Fitness

Rogue Fitness offers a wide range of products. The American company stands for quality, variety and control of the products by hand. Unfortunately, this is also reflected in the price, which is why Rogue Fitness gymnastics rings tend to be more expensive.

However, the high price does not change the popularity and fame of Rogue Fitness. By the way, the company is one of the main sponsors of Crossfit and the Crossfit Games.

The Crossfit Games have been held since 2007 and take place annually.

Reebok

Most people probably know the Reebok brand as a manufacturer of sportswear. However, they have much more to offer, including fitness equipment such as gymnastic rings. Reebok products tend to be in the mid to high price range. Reebok is also a sponsor of the Crossfitgames.

BeMaxx

BeMaxx develops high-quality and functional sports equipment for all kinds of training goals. Pull-up bars, fitness bands and gymnastic rings are included in their product portfolio. If you want high quality products, with a reasonable price, BeMaxx is the right place for you.

Suspension

The most common suspension systems are nylon straps or ropes made of natural or synthetic fibres. Both are robust and can withstand a lot of weight. However, nylon straps are the most commonly used.

When choosing a suspension system, you must always pay attention to the length, the thickness and the maximum load capacity. The possibility of adjusting the length is also an important differentiating factor. Belts are adjusted by means of a buckle and ropes by means of an adjustment shaft.

Diameter of the rings

A distinction is made here between the outer and tube diameters of the rings. The tube diameter determines the thickness of the rings and the outer diameter determines the general diameter.

The tube diameter is usually 28 or 32 mm, but the 28 mm version is more common. You have to test for yourself which tube diameter is comfortable for you to grip. If you want to work on your grip strength, we recommend the thicker 32 mm rings.

The outer diameter is the same for almost every gymnastics ring and is between 23-25 cm.

Facts worth knowing about gymnastics rings

How are gymnastics rings properly attached?

Gymnastics rings can be attached in several ways. The easiest way is to hang them on a pull-up bar or on a roof beam. Gymnastics rings can also be mounted on the ceiling. In this case, however, you have to install a suspension in the form of a ring.

The disadvantage is that you have to drill a hole in the ceiling. This method should rather be used in a high room in order to be able to perform exercises such as pull-ups.

The correct distance between the two rings can be chosen individually according to the exercises. However, the basic rule is to set a shoulder-width distance.

The Maltese is probably one of the most difficult exercises on the gymnastics rings. Incredible strength and coordination are necessary for this exercise. (Image source: pixabay.com/skeeze)

What exercises are there for gymnastics rings?

The main advantage of gymnastic rings is that they are suitable for people of all fitness levels. The workout can be very varied because you can train the whole body with the gymnastic rings. Here we have summarised a few exercises for beginners, advanced and professionals:

Fitness level Exercises
Ibeginner Push-ups,Rows
Advanced L-Sit, Dips, Pull-up, Muscle-up
Pro Front Lever,Iron Cross,Maltese

Pull-up bar or gymnastic rings? Which is better?

Both types of training have advantages and disadvantages. It is not possible to give a general answer as to which is better. Because gymnastic rings, unlike a pull-up bar, are movable, they offer a unique challenge to your training.

You cannot perform the exercises with your strength alone. You also need to maintain balance and stability throughout your body.
