The Best Hair Rollers: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying hair rollers

Our hair is our trademark, it defines our personality and expresses our sense of fashion and style. But not everyone is blessed with a flowing head of curls.

The cause lies in your genes. If you lack trichohyalin, your hair will remain straight. If you still want to have a luscious head of curls, you need the right hair rollers and you need to know how to use them correctly. Our guide will help you choose the right product.

What are hair rollers?

Hair rollers are beauty products that are twisted into straight or slightly wavy hair and give the hair a curly shape.

They are cylindrical rollers made of different materials and thicknesses. They can be used to create curls in different sizes and designs.

There are many differences in size, material and structure. The handling and application time of the rollers depend on this.

While heated rollers can be expected to produce satisfactory results after less than half an hour, simple wire rollers should be left in the hair for a few hours or, better still, overnight to achieve the desired result.

How does hair rollers work?

The tube-like housing of the curler can be made of different materials. The way it works does not differ. After washing, the individual strands of hair are separated and twisted onto the hair rollers.

The strands are completely untwisted and the curlers are attached to the top of the head. Some models also have fine hairs and adhere to the head without the need for clamps or elastics.

Now the rollers need some time. Using a hairdryer or special drying bonnets can shorten the time it takes for the hair to dry under the rollers. When the rollers are removed from the dry hair, the result is a curly head of hair.

The size of the curls depends on the size of the rollers you choose. Small rollers will give you corkscrew curls. Larger hair rollers give you more volume and correspondingly eye-catching curls.

Which hair rollers do I need?

You can make choosing the right easier by taking a closer look at your hair. Short and fine hair will not create a flowing curl. A few small rollers will suffice.

Longer or layered hair is best curled using a set of different hair rollers.

For long hair, you will need extra large rollers and a helping hand if possible, as long hair is difficult to untwist, especially at the back of the head.

What should I bear in mind when using hair rollers?

One prerequisite for using curlers is wet or damp hair. The rollers are usually used immediately after washing the hair. Then wait until the hair has dried.

With long and thick hair, this can take hours. Therefore, the process can be shortened by using a hairdryer or a drying bonnet. The hair does not always have to be washed completely to use the curlers.

Even if you only dampen the hair slightly or work with a damp comb, you can then twist in curlers. The result will depend on the choice of hair rollers.

If you are not sure, check the manufacturer's instructions. The packaging usually indicates whether the rollers are for thin, thick, short or long hair.

How to use hair rollers correctly?

To ensure that you are satisfied with the result, there are a few things you should keep in mind when using curlers. The hair strand must be completely wound up.

Some practice is required to achieve an even result. It is especially important that you do not leave out the ends of the hair. Otherwise, they would stick out from the head and mess up the hairstyle.

Always start twisting with the ends of the hair. Then twist the curler all the way to the hairline. The curls at the back of the head are particularly problematic. It is a good idea to ask a second person for help at the beginning.

The hair rollers should be as tight as possible. The more defined the curls will appear. If you are not sure whether the hair is already dry, first remove a test curler from the back of the head and check the result.

The drying time depends on the length and texture of the hair. If you use a bonnet dryer or a blow dryer, the drying time is about 20 minutes. Air drying, on the other hand, takes one to three hours. If you want to air dry your hair, it is best to leave the rollers in your hair overnight.

How long should hair rollers remain in the hair?

How long you should leave the curlers in your hair depends on the length and thickness of your hair and the result you want. For slightly wavy hair, one to two hours should be enough.

For the most intense results, leave the rollers in overnight and remove them in the morning. If you need to do it quickly, use heated rollers or help with a dryer bonnet or hair dryer.

The heat will give good results and you can remove the curlers in less than an hour.

If you use rollers without a heating system, they should be left in your hair for at least an hour.

Which rollers are suitable for long hair?

If you have long and thick hair, the rollers will have a hard time. The hair brings a lot of weight with it. This causes the curls to hang out quickly and only last a short time.

For long hair, heated rollers are the best option. The largest possible rollers should be used. Once you have removed the curlers, you should use hairspray to fix the curls better and make them last much longer.

Decision: What types of rollers are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between seven types of rollers.

  • Velvet rollers
  • Wire rollers
  • Velcro rollers
  • Volume rollers
  • Hair rollers
  • Curlers for perms
  • Papilottes

What are velvet rollers and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

The basis of velvet rollers is a tube made of aluminium, which has a braided structure. The surface is covered with a layer of velvet. This gives the rollers a smooth surface and prevents them from getting caught in the hair.

The permeable look allows the hair to dry quickly. You will have no problems twisting the curlers into your hair and removing them again. The hair rollers must be secured in the hair. For this purpose, special hairpins are suitable, which are called "Sticherl".

These rollers are very suitable when you want to blow-dry your hair. The permeable structure allows good air circulation. However, make sure that the velvet cover is not damaged, otherwise there is a risk of burns.

  • Wide range of products
  • Good air circulation when blow-drying
  • No tangling in the hair
  • Different sizes available
  • Attachment with hairpins necessary
  • Risk of burns if the velvet cover is damaged

What are wire rollers and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Wire rollers can be considered a classic among curlers. The curlers are made of a wire mesh and have a bristle insert, which makes them more comfortable to wear, but at the same time makes them more difficult to handle. Long hair often gets caught in the bristles when the rollers are removed.

Wire curlers come in different sizes. You need hairpins to attach the rollers. One advantage is the low price of these models. However, the quality often reveals shortcomings. The material deforms easily and can cause burns when blow-drying.

Modern versions of the classic wire rollers are covered with plastic and are therefore more visually appealing and more valuable in use.

  • Cheap to buy
  • Wide range of sizes available
  • Unfavourable feel
  • Inferior quality
  • Risk of burns when blow-drying

What are velcro wraps and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

If you want the hair to be particularly easy to use, hook and loop rollers are probably the right choice for you. The further development of the classic wire curler allows the curlers to adhere to the hair without the use of elastics or hairpins.

The rollers are twisted in as usual and stick to the hair independently due to their plastic surface. The product selection is particularly large for these models. Everything is possible between diameters of 10 and 80 millimetres. Even long hair can be tamed well with hook and loop rollers.

These models reveal their weaknesses when untwisted. Long hairs stick to the Velcro material. You have to use a lot of force to remove them. This often leads to knotting of the hair. The curls are often largely removed by the pulling effect.

  • Large selection
  • No fastening necessary
  • Quick application
  • Inexpensive to buy
  • xHair gets caught in the velcro material
  • Removing the curlers is difficult, especially with long hair

What are volume hair rollers and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Who doesn't want more volume for thin and fine hair? Volume rollers are specially designed to do this job. It is not a continuous tube shape like the classic curler, but these hair rollers are concave in shape.

The circumference of the curler decreases towards the centre. This effect creates more volume in the hair. You will need bobby pins to attach them. You will need some practice to wind the hair properly.

The sides of the strands must lie on the wider outer edges, otherwise you will end up with small curls without the desired volume. If you have particularly thick hair, these curlers are less suitable.

  • Add volume
  • Good for thin hair
  • Variety of sizes available
  • Need to be secured with bobby pins
  • Not suitable for thicker hair
  • Requires some practice to use

What are heat rollers and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Heated rollers are the most modern version of the classic curler. If you want to curl your hair quickly and intensively, it is worth paying a little more for these models.

Heated rollers are usually made of Teflon or ceramic. To improve the look and protect the hair, they are usually covered with velvet or velour.

Heated rollers can also be used on dry hair. To do this, they must first be brought up to temperature in a charger. The charging time varies from model to model and is about two minutes.

Then the rollers are twisted in as usual. However, you should pay attention to the temperature. The soaking time is about 20 minutes. Afterwards, the cooled rollers are removed from the hair.

The resulting curls are particularly pleasing and smooth. The curls last for several hours.

  • Quick results
  • Easy to use
  • Lush and smooth curls
  • Can be used on dry hair
  • Expensive to buy
  • Risk of burns from heat

What are perm rollers and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Just a few decades ago, the choice of perm rollers was almost unmanageable. Today, the opposite is true. The classic perm has gone out of fashion and simple volume curlers have often taken its place.

However, if you want to treat yourself to your own perm at home, you need these small rollers made of hard rubber, which have a rubber band at their ends for fastening.

  • Lightweight
  • Handy
  • Easy to use
  • Ideal for home perm
  • Low availability
  • Rubber bands often tear
  • Low durability

What are papilottes and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Papilottes are modern and practical styling products that are very different from the classic curling iron. The classic tube has given way to a long rubber tube. This makes Papilottes particularly flexible and comfortable to wear at night.

Papilottes can also be used on dry hair. You simply wrap the hair around the foam rubber and twist the rubber tube together at the end. This creates the shape of a butterfly, which also explains the name of these rollers.

  • Easy to use
  • Gentle to use
  • Flexible
  • Cuddly
  • Good to wear overnight
  • Can also be used in dry hair
  • Takes some getting used to
  • Durability rather low

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate rollers

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate rollers. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular hair curler is suitable for you or not.

In summary, these are:

  • Type
  • Quantity
  • Size
  • Material
  • Handling

We have already reported on the different types of rollers. It is important to find the right products for short or long, thin or strong, wet or dry hair.

hair type suitable curlers
long hair
  • Long hair is particularly heavy and rollers do not hold well.
  • Wire rollers, velvet rollers or adhesive rollers can be used.
  • To make the curls last longer, fix them with hairspray.
short hair
  • It is difficult to fix rollers in short hair.
  • Small wire rollers or adhesive rollers are the right choice.
  • Smaller heating rollers can also be used to make the curls stand out more intensively.
thin hair
  • Thin hair needs volume.
  • This can be achieved with special volume rollers.
  • Heated rollers can also be used.
strong hair
  • Strong hair brings a lot of weight.
  • The curlers are difficult to roll up and should be well secured.
  • Alternatively, you can use a curling iron for thick hair.

For quick overnight curls, use the handy papilottes. If you want the curls to last as long as possible, heated rollers are the best choice.

Hair rollers are usually sold in sets. The number of rollers you need depends on the length and density of your hair. For normal short to medium length hair, six to eight curlers are sufficient.

If long hair is to be tamed, twelve or more rollers should be used. The number of rollers also depends on the type of rollers used.

While a comparatively large number of rollers are needed for papilottes, you can get by with far fewer rollers for volumetric rollers.

Hair rollers are available in many different sizes. For volume curlers, diameters between five and forty millimetres are common. The most commonly used rollers are 70 millimetres long. However, there is also a short form that measures only half that length.

The size depends on your hair and the curl you want to achieve. If you use wide rollers, you will need fewer. Shorter curlers create smaller curls.

A large diameter curler will add volume to your hair. The result of smaller rollers are the so-called corkscrew curls, especially small and intense curls.

The material of the hair rollers not only determines the look, but also the quality and comfort. The cheapest products on the market are curlers made of wire and plastic. These models are widely used and often have a velvet sheath.

The weight also plays a role, after all, you will have to wear the rollers for some time. The heaviest models are the ceramic or Teflon hair curlers, which only remain in the hair for a short time.

Papilottes are made of plastic foam, are particularly light and therefore well suited to remain in the hair overnight.

In most cases, the rollers have to be attached with special hairpins. This requires some practice and is made more difficult by the size and weight of the curlers.

Not always as easy as it may seem at first - using curlers can cause quite a bit of frustration, especially during the first few attempts. But don't worry, with a little routine you'll find curling a breeze. (Image source: / Markus Spiske

Hair rollers are easy to use because you don't have to attach them to your hair. However, these models are only suitable for long hair to a limited extent, because when they are removed, the hair can get tangled in the Velcro material and become knotted and matted.

Papilottes are easy to use and gentle on the hair. Volume rollers are more difficult to use because they require special curling of the hair strands.

Facts worth knowing about hair rollers

As you may have noticed, it is a complex subject and choosing the right curlers is not always easy.

However, by now you know for sure how to assess the condition of your hair and how to choose the right curlers. We've added a few more interesting facts about how to achieve a luscious head of curls at the end of this article.

How long have hair rollers been around?

Curls have always been considered an ideal of beauty. The ancient Greeks, however, did not have a classic curler at their disposal, but had to make do with something else.

The first curlers in history were tubes that were heated over a fire. The prototype of today's curler was designed by the ancient Romans with the so-called calamistrum.

Not a boon for the hair, but an important step in the history of hair art was the invention of the perm in 1906. For this, the hair was first dipped in an alkaline solution.

Then metal rods were used. Hot metal tongs were used to heat the former curlers. Customers had to put up with five hours for this procedure.

The heyday of the classic wire curlers was in the 1950s and 1960s, when hardly any woman left the house without a perm. The perm has been obsolete for about 20 years.

Women go for variable looks and use the different curlers for light waves, voluminous curls or defined corkscrew curls.

Why are curls created?

Curls are created for the simple reason that the hair adapts to a certain shape. You've probably used a straightening iron to tame your stubborn hair.

The curler works in much the same way. The damp hair is wound up and over time it takes on the shape of the curler. The effect can be intensified by applying heat.

What should be considered when caring for curlers?

Curlers should be cleaned regularly. With each use, hairs will get caught in the grid structure of wire curlers. Hair also gets stuck in staple rollers.

The hairs can usually be removed with your fingers. If a lot of hairs have become caught, the curlers can be dipped in a liquid mixed with bicarbonate of soda or bleach. After a few minutes, the hairs can be easily removed.

The curlers should be allowed to dry completely before storing them in a special container. Damaged curlers can usually be disposed of in the plastic waste. Heated rollers can often be repaired, which justifies the higher initial cost.
