Today's article is for those who already have or intend to have a toothed friend, tiny, cuddly, and especially healthy. Let's talk all about the feed for hamsters. As easy as it is to have a hamster, feeding it is a serious matter (of any pet, by the way). So, we will show in the guide below all the information you need to choose the right feed for your hamster.

Summary

  • Most pet foods are a mix of dehydrated grains, fruits and vegetables with so-called extruded particles, a kind of processed pet food.
  • Each breed has a different feed. Each breed is more accustomed to a different type of food, and there are foods that are not allowed for each breed.
  • For this reason, pet foods made for small rodents are generally not suitable for hamsters.

The Best Hamster Food: Our Picks

Buying Guide

Food is a very important part of any living thing, but it is special for hamsters. Their very name is related to food. The name 'hamster' comes from the German word'hamstern', meaning to hoard, which our furry friends do with food on their big (and fluffy) cheeks.

So, it is only fair that you choose the best food for your little rodent, suitable for its breed, its size and its age. In this Shopping Guide, we will help you in this endeavor, showing the best brands, sharing important information and answering the most common questions.

What is Nutrópica hamster food?

Without beating around the bush, Nutropic is one of the best feed options for your hamster. Starting that the brand clearly differentiates the different products for different species of small rodents, such as rabbits, guinea pigs, twisters, among others. Within this segmentation, the selection of ingredients is specific for each species, so that the right dosage of minerals and vitamins are ingested.

There are three versions of Nútropica for hamsters: Normal, Gourmet and Muesli. The latter combines cereals, fruits and vegetables to have a greater flavour appeal for those "teethers" who are not very well fed in their cages. Finally, Nutrópica feed has a rigorous quality control and, mainly, does not use by-products in the composition, such as bran, scraps and the like.

What are the advantages of the feed for hamster Serelepe?

If the feed Nutrópica is positioned in the market as a brand of excellence, with gourmet lines and differentiating small rodents, the Serelepe acts as a feed generalist, for hamsters, rabbits and whoever else is small, hairy and notothy. That is not to say, however, that it is a poor quality food. On the contrary, Serelepe is, along with Nutrópica, one of the brands most concerned with balanced nutrition of its compounds.

The feeds are extruded, which are a kind of processed food for pets

The feed is extruded, which is a kind of processed food for pets. So don't expect fruit and other foods to be dehydrated. Still, they are rich in minerals and enriched with vitamins, for prebiotics and antioxidants. It is a feed, after all, with a good cost-benefit, especially for those who have a larger number of hamsters or need to save a little to close the house bills. On the other hand, it contains preservatives, such as adsorbent additives and antifungal additives, and artificial flavours.

Advantages
  • Good cost-benefit
  • Balanced nutrition
  • Rich in fiber and enriched with vitamins
Disadvantages
  • Generalist
  • Contains preservatives and additives

Is it possible to replace hamster food?

A hamster's diet should be thought of as the same as ours, with the necessary adaptations, of course. The point is that the ideal, for rodents or humans, is to have the most natural diet possible and the most balanced. It turns out that doing this requires work, time, and, above all, money. Still, if you want to improve the diet of your hamster, it is possible to replace the feed by a series of foods.

The first thing you should know is that domesticated hamsters are basically herbivores. As such, they eat seeds in general, some grains and most nuts by instinct and for pleasure. Vegetables and fruits are also welcome in hamster stomachs, such as apples, pears, carrots, broccoli. Even lettuce these little guys will eat, and, if it is clean and free of pesticide substances, a little grass to help digestion.

Don't forget to leave food available all day long, along with water, and that you both stay away from the hamster's bathroom in the cage

The ideal is that all this is mixed in small portions and in small pieces, and that this composition has around 15% of proteins (vegetables and legumes) and 5% of fats (nuts, mainly). There are, of course, foods that are not allowed for hamsters, which have a much more sensitive digestive tract than humans. Citrus fruits, such as oranges and lemons, are out, as are fatty ones, such as pineapple and avocado.

Spices in general are also bad: garlic, onion, basil, parsley. Potatoes and cassava are not very good either. Needless to say, any processed food, or even cooked food, like beans and tomato sauce, let alone sweets, are equally (if not more) harmful.

Buying Criteria

We continue with our list of buying criteria. These are our final tips, based on traditional elements of the feeds available on the market and the care that is taken today with hamsters and other pets.

Breed

As emphasized earlier, each breed of hamster has an ideal diet, with preferred and other forbidden foods. Find out, therefore, about the feeding habits of the breed - Syrian, Chinese, Russian dwarf, among others - that you have in your home. We already advance that not all places sell feed for specific breeds, which makes your information even more important, so you can select packages with the most suitable ingredients.

Size

The size of your hamster is an important point when choosing the feed, especially to choose the right amount, even for reasons of economy and practicality. You do not want to go out to buy feed all the time, right? Or let it spoil... Try, then, to buy a package of feed with a quantity that matches the size of your pet. The larger it is, the larger the package. It is also worth paying attention to possible "disappearances" of feed, since the hamsters have, as we explained, the habit of storing food, especially in the place where they rest.

Ingredients

If in the first item we talked about selecting the right ingredients for each race, here we hit the key of selecting quality ingredients. The idea is that the ration has as many natural ingredients as possible, including grains, vegetables and fruits.

The attention must also turn to preservatives, artificial flavors and aromas, sodium, in short, the traditional industrial trail in food products, which if they are bad for us humans, are even more harmful to our small rodents.

The ideal is that the feed is full of natural ingredients, and as free as possible of additives and preservatives.(Source: appledeng / Pixabay.com)

Brand

One last resource for choosing a good hamster food is to look for the best brands. They are the ones that hold the best ingredients, the most advanced processes, the best resources, in short, to make a quality feed. We mention in the text Serelepe and Nutrópica, but there are other brands such as Vitale, Real Friends and Alcon, who work with a good quality control, and are good choices.
