Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a hanging tent
What is a hanging tent?
A hanging tent is also called a tree tent, hammock tent or portable ledge. In the beginning, the tent was only known to mountaineers. In the meantime, there are different versions that are also interesting for private use.
The hanging frame is stretched between two or more trees with the help of straps. With the simpler versions for the garden, you sometimes only need one tree.
Whether you are travelling alone or as a couple, this type of tent offers you a bit of freedom. It's especially easy to relax in the airy heights. In the further course of this guide, you will get to know different options.
What should I look for when buying a hanging tent?
Be aware that there are simple hanging tents for every budget. If you want a more comfortable and higher quality tree tent, you should spend a little more money. The tent should have a safe and stable construction so that you can start the next day refreshed.
In addition, you should of course consider the purpose for which you want to use the hanging tent. For climbing tours, hiking through the forest, for playing with the children or for relaxing in the garden.
Due to the different sizes, you should be aware of whether you will be using the space in the tent alone or as a couple. In this context, you also need to think about the load capacity. There are hanging tents that can withstand only 100 kilograms or up to 250 kilograms.
Another important point is choosing the right material and water column. If you mainly use the hanging tent outdoors, it should protect you from rain and have a high water column.
How much does a hanging tent cost?
There are many different budget categories. It depends on the purpose for which you want to use the tent and what features you want it to have. In the table below, I will show you 3 options at different prices.
|Hanging tent||Whether on trekking tours through the forest or for private use, a hanging tent can be used for many areas||between €70 and €300|
|Hanging chair||The hanging chair is only interesting for private use. It is attached to the ceiling, to a tree or to a supplied construction and offers a relaxing place to snuggle up, read or play||between 80 and 400€|
|Tree tent||The tree tent is designed for outdoor areas and offers an optimal sleeping accommodation for hiking tours||between 200 and 350€|
What alternatives are there to the hanging tent?
A good alternative to the hanging tent would of course be a normal camping tent, also known as an inglu tent. Let's take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of a camping tent.
Because of its small and elongated dimensions, the camping tent is very easy to transport and can be taken anywhere. It offers optimal protection from wind and rain. In addition, it does not necessarily have to be secured with pegs if its own weight is high. It is safe and very stable.
One disadvantage is that it takes a little time and some camping experience to set up. The larger the tent, the more complicated and longer it takes to pitch. Due to the basic shape of the camping tent, the living space cannot usually be used effectively.
Another and much quicker and simpler option would be a roll-up tent. It offers the same space as a camping tent, but is definitely quicker to set up.
This video shows you a few more tips and useful information on the subject of tree tents vs. normal tents.
Decision: What type of hanging tent is there and which one is right for me?
Basically, a hanging tent can be divided into two different types:
- Hanging tent for an indoor area
- Hanging tent for an outdoor area
What distinguishes a hanging tent for indoor areas and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
Indoor hanging tents are becoming increasingly popular. They not only look good, but also give you the feeling of floating on clouds.
They are made of a durable polyester-cotton material and are particularly robust. This cover is soft, water-repellent, mould-resistant and UV-resistant.
Hanging tents made of this material mix can also be installed in the garden for short periods of time. However, care should be taken that it is not mainly outside.
Safety is also taken care of. The hanging tent is attached with the help of snap hooks and a tear-resistant nylon rope.
What distinguishes a hanging tent for outdoor areas and what are the advantages and disadvantages in each case?
Hanging tents or tree tents for outdoor use are characterised by the fact that they can be taken anywhere. Whether in a backpack, on a bicycle, motorbike or for paddling, it is light, compact and fits in almost any bag.
The processed materials are 100% waterproof, UV-resistant and robust. Due to the special suspension on several straps, ratchets and trees, the safety is particularly high and you don't have to worry about the tent collapsing.
Depending on the model, there is room for one person, couples or families with children.
Assembly is a little more difficult at first, but gradually it becomes easier. But you will be rewarded with an unmistakable night's sleep.
Buying criteria: You can compare and evaluate a hanging tent based on these factors
- Water column
Dimensions are crucial when choosing a hanging tent. Whether for one person, two adults or couples with children, there is something for every demand. Different designs offer enough space for every requirement.
The smaller tree tents offer space for one person or two people and are approx. 2.5 x 3 metres in size. The larger ones, on the other hand, are designed for 3 to 4 people and measure approx. 2.7 x 4.5 metres.
The larger the lying surface, the more comfortable the stay in the hanging tent.
Hanging tents for the garden or for indoor use are usually round and attached to a prefabricated construction.
Alternatively, the tent can also be hung from a tree or a beam. These come in different diameters. Single from 120 cm diameter and double from 150 to 180 cm diameter.
The height of the hanging tent ranges from 150 to 160 cm.
The most stressed material in a hanging tent is the outer material. The outer material is exposed to all weather conditions.
Most high-quality tents are made of particularly tear-resistant and hard-wearing polyester. Hanging tents made of this material are lightweight, UV-resistant and particularly suitable for travelling. In addition, it is durable and robust.
Did you know that a tent coating is particularly important?
A coating of the tent material increases UV resistance, tear resistance and weather resistance.
Nylon, on the other hand, has the great advantage that it is very cheap and light to produce. But this is exactly where the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. When wet, the material expands in such a way that the cell fabric quickly sags. This means that the outer tent has to be re-tensioned. The UV resistance and tear strength of nylon are also lower.
This criterion again depends entirely on your intended use. If you are going on a trekking tour or hiking, every gram counts.
|Number of persons||Weight||Load capacity|
|2 persons||between 6 and 7 kg||up to 220 kg|
|3 to 4 persons||between 7 and 9 kg||up to 400 kg|
If you want to take the hanging tent with you on air travel, you should bear in mind that the weight is not uninteresting. Airlines charge a lot for extra luggage. A kilo can cost as much as €50.
When travelling by car, camper van or caravan, weight is not so important. Here, it's more a matter of the dimensions and the storage space.
One of the most important criteria is the water column rating when it comes to the waterproofness of your tent. This can be determined as follows:
- The appropriate material is stretched under a measuring cylinder
- An increasingly high water column is left on 10 square centimetres of material
- The measuring limit is reached when the water begins to make its way through the material
As a standard in Germany, it can be said that the fabric is waterproof from a water column of 1300 mm. If it rains and thunders permanently, a water column of at least 3000 mm is recommended. Especially if the hanging tent is regularly used in outdoor areas. The higher the value, the more water-resistant the hanging tent.
