In North Africa, the blossoms are used to brew a refreshing deep red tea with a sour taste, which is served cold in summer. In Southeast Asia, the flowers are added to curry dishes.

Over time, when the seeds are ripe, their colour turns a deep, bright dark red and the calyx becomes fleshy. This is the ideal time to harvest the hibiscus, usually in summer.

At flowering time, the flowers are best carefully air-dried and then crushed.

Facts worth knowing about hibiscus flowers

Can hibiscus flowers have side effects?

At present, there are no known side effects or interactions with hibiscus flowers. Therefore, even small children are allowed to drink the red tea. It is only important with teas not to use so much sugar or sweeteners.

Only in rare cases of overdose have side effects appeared in the form of digestive problems such as diarrhoea. This is why hibiscus is often used for constipation.

In any case, the side effects are usually not threatening, but it is only necessary to drink enough water with it. Pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding should avoid using hibiscus if possible, or at least check with their doctor.

Hibiscus flowers should be stored in a dry place and protected from light. They will keep for at least 24 months this way.

What are the most common problems when growing hibiscus flowers?

When growing hibiscus, the plant may lose leaves, flowers and buds. Below we explain what you should do in such cases.

Drought

Drought is harmful to both garden hibiscus and houseplants. Therefore, you should water your hibiscus immediately. If the drought has lasted too long, the leaves cannot be saved.

Wetness

Wetness is also harmful. If the roots stand in water, they will start to rot after a while. In this case you should repot your hibiscus.

Spider mites

Especially during overwintering. This is usually due to room temperatures that are too warm and humidity that is too low. It is absolutely important to detect the pests early, because they are difficult to control. In case of a light infestation, you can gently spray the plant in the bathtub and then put a transparent bag over the leaves. You should then leave the infested pot like this for at least a week.

Yellow spot disease (viral disease)

You can recognise a virus disease by yellow spots on the leaves. Not the whole leaf turns yellow, but only individual spots. You should isolate the hibiscus immediately and discard the affected leaves. It is important not to put them on the compost.

Chlorosis

You can recognise chlorosis by yellowish leaves where the leaf veins are clearly protruding (usually strong green). The cause is a certain nutrient deficiency, usually iron. Cut off rotten parts. You should also repot in loose, permeable substrate. You should then change your watering habits.
