A hook is an object that is used to hang various household items. From clothes to pots, pots or anything else that takes up a lot of space and that, by placing it on these, allows a fairly high optimization of the space where items are stored. Among these devices there are some for clothes and others for vehicles.

We know how difficult it can be to choose these objects, which are often underestimated and undervalued precisely because they are so well known. To prevent you from making the wrong choice, or choosing something you will later regret, we prioritise and provide the best information just for you.

  • A hook is a hanging hook that is used to hang other materials, mainly clothes, pots and pans, guest dresses, towels and a variety of other things. They are indispensable in every home.
  • There are variations depending on what they are used for. The best known are for wardrobes, so common in wardrobes. These are the least versatile of all. Other shapes, such as adhesive or S-shaped, are more universal.
  • Things like size, colour, the materials they are made of and where they are intended to be used are critical in determining quality and the right choice for the buyer.

Buying guide: What you need to know about hooks

Some of the most important realities in choosing something correctly are to have a correct tabulation of information that makes it digestible and accessible, and to understand all the elements that are directly and indirectly involved in the effectiveness of what you want to buy. For this it is wise to have a good guide and to orient ourselves.

The most common and well-known are the ones used for clothing (Photo: serezniy /

What is a hook and what are its advantages?

A hook is a practical tool consisting of an elongation made of iron, steel or plastic, which looks like a cable. It is used to hang a wide variety of objects from it, depending on the user's needs and the criteria used to manufacture it. They are available for a variety of purposes.

These range from the spacing of clothes to the spacing of pots and pans and a multitude of other things associated with special distribution. This is, in fact, the main function of items like this: to help get the most out of the places where units are stored. They are household essentials.

The biggest advantage of having them is that, unless they are designed exclusively for clothes, they can be used in many different ways and can be placed in bathrooms, kitchens or garages.

  • They are long lasting
  • Most of them are multipurpose
  • They are a cheap item
  • They help to manage the design of spaces
  • They allow to keep tidy areas of the home
  • They can have a fairly low resistance
  • They are bad if they are not stainless
  • If they are made of plastic, they get scratched
  • Clothes hooks are not multipurpose

Clothes hooks, S-hooks or adhesive hooks - what should you pay attention to?

The expectation of those who use this type of device is that the things that are put on them will remain static, and that the space in the area where they are placed can be managed much better. And although this expectation may seem simple to satisfy, it is important to know that there are not one, but several types of this object.

Clothes hook. This variant is characterised by having a shape that is globally associated precisely with its usefulness. The "tie" in which the plastic or metal of the hook is arranged is very characteristic, consisting basically of a sort of triangle, similar to the shape of the shoulder, from which the dresses hang.

S-hook. It consists of a curvature in the shape of the well-known letter, which allows, in its upper curve, to keep it "held" from the place where it will hang, while in the lower curve it holds the clothes, pots or any other object that is intended to be placed on it. They are versatile as their shape combines in any space.

Adhesive hook. These have the appearance of a metallic "protuberance" that emerges from the wall. Classically they used to be attached to the wall using nails or some other heavier way of holding them. Nowadays, most of them use ultra-adhesive stickers that make the latter unnecessary. They are suitable for virtually all spaces.

Buying criteria

In addition to all the things explored so far, there are always a number of small details that directly or indirectly affect what you expect to buy. And even if at first glance these may seem like insignificant details, they do matter depending on what the individual expectations are.

In this case, being something with such a practical purpose, there are some points that it is advisable to have in order or at least observe before deciding to buy the object. Among them are:

How big it is has a relative importance to what we are going to put in it. Traditionally, the largest sizes are those for clothes, although these are also the least resistant given the material they are made of.

If they are made of metal alloys, the wide ones can be used for pots, holding hammocks, clothes or other heavy tasks. The small ones, on the other hand, can be used for such things as keys, ornaments or small items.

If it will be in an outdoor area, such as a garage, porch, living room or so on, it is important to pay attention to what tint it has. Metallic colours look great in kitchens, bathrooms and garages; in living rooms or elsewhere, white may be best.

What it is made of is key to knowing a number of things, such as how long it will last, how well it will stand up to the things it will be carrying, and so on. For example, if it is made of iron or any metal, it is important to know if it is stainless or not.

Metal. Its strong point should be its durability, but this is not always the case. To know what kind of alloys it is made of, as well as if it can rust or not. This also depends on where it will be: a kitchen? A cellar? These are damp places. Aluminium, or elements that are mixed with it, bend easily.

Plastic. The least hard of all, but also the most versatile. It is ideal for hanging clothes because, as it does not support a lot of weight on top, it can retain it very well. In addition, it is impossible for water or other liquids to damage it.

Wood. Of all, it is the weakest against water. Any form of humidity will greatly deteriorate it, so it is imperative to know how to use it. It is particularly recommended for holding dry clothes in the wardrobe.

Where in the home will they be used? Intimate places, such as bedrooms, usually make use of one type and public areas of another. In such a case, it is important to cite adhesive alternatives as the best, as they are aesthetically pleasing everywhere.

Living room. When guests arrive, they need a place to put jumpers, coats, hats and so on. Hooks of this type are ideal for this purpose. The most useful are adhesive ones. These come in handy in such a place, too, for holding keys, if they are small enough.

Kitchen. S-hooks should be the protagonist in the kitchen. These, as long as they are rustproof, can carry a good pot without falling off, as well as being strong enough not to bend with heavy things like these.

Bedrooms. These areas can make use of two types: stickers and clothes pegs. The latter, as is reasonable, should go in the wardrobe, where they keep the clothes correctly arranged. Stickers can be used to put things for going out, such as overcoats, umbrellas, etc., in them.

Bathrooms. In these places you need something to hold the towel, and these well-known tools are ideal. These should be made of alloys that are known to be rustproof, given the large amount of moisture they will receive.
