What is hop extract?

Hop extract, also called ethanol extract, is obtained from hops with the help of alcohol.
Hop extract is also called ethanol extract.

However, the first thing to do is to extract the hops from the hop plant, Humulus lupulus. This plant grows in Europe, Asia and North America. The required part only occurs in female plants of this species. (1) The exact hop extract is produced by extraction with an alcohol-water mixture.

During this extrusion, all substance groups of the raw hops are extracted. Then the extract is divided into the pure resin extract and the tannin extract. The next step is to mix the paste-like extract thus obtained with a solution as a carrier material and then spray-dry it. This then produces a powder and if the powder is then pressed again, a granulate is produced (2)

How does hop extract work?

Hop extract has different effects and can be used for different problems. Here are some points where hops can be helpful.

  • Against menstrual and menopausal problems

You can then look at the exact symptoms and see what might apply to you. (4)

Against nervousness and insomnia

The calming effect of hop extract and the subjective improvement in the quality of sleep have been proven in various studies. The fat-soluble hop substances such as α-bitter acids are said to be responsible for the calming effect. (4)

According to the study, the daily intake of hop extract can help and improve the above-mentioned symptoms over a period of 4 weeks in young adults who report at least mild depression, anxiety and stress symptoms. (5)

Antibacterial effect

In general, hops are often used in folk medicine to treat external poorly healing wounds. This application has proven to be extremely useful over many years. The antibacterial and antifungal effect of hop extract can delay the development of dental caries.

Hops can also help with duodenal ulcers and stomach cancer. (4) In general, studies and animal experiments have shown that humulones (alpha acids) and lupulones (beta acids) have a good anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-oedematous and also an anti-cancer effect. (6)

For digestion

Hops and hop extract can be used for digestive disorders, stomach complaints or flatulence. This is because the bitter substances are said to promote the flow of saliva and the secretion of gastric juice. This then stimulates digestion. (4)

Against bladder infections

Hop extract is also used to treat bladder problems such as irritable bladder or cystitis. This is because hops are generally said to promote urination. (4) At the same time, hops can balance out hormonal imbalances as a cause of bladder problems. Furthermore, the calming effect of hops on the stressful regular urge to urinate also helps. (7)

Against menstrual and menopausal symptoms

Why hop extract can help with menstrual and menopausal symptoms is due to the phytohormones and substances in hops that are similar to oestrogen. However, it is important to note that hops should only be used in a later phase of menopause. This is because in the initial phase there is a relative oestrogen surplus by itself. (4)

What side effects can hop extract have?

In general, no side effects are known for taking hops and hop extract. Since it is considered a very tolerable herbal medicine. (8) The only thing that has occurred so far is that headaches, drowsiness, skin inflammation and joint complaints have occurred when hops are harvested (3).

What is the alternative to hop extract?

There is no direct alternative to the miracle plant Humulus lupulus, as it can have several positive effects and can be used several times. For this reason, one has to look at the problem that needs to be solved. Then one can look for an alternative to hop extract. For example, if an herbal remedy for insomnia is sought, calming medicinal plants such as lavender, valerian, CBD, melatonin or even chamomile could be supportive (9).

In general, it is always important to do your research before taking any remedies.
